Oral lichen planus and oral lichenoid lesions; a critical appraisal with emphasis on the diagnostic aspects
2009
Oral lichen planus (OLP) has a prevalence of approximately 1%. The etiopathogenesis is poorly understood. The annual malignant transformation is less than 0.5%. There are no effective means to either predict or to prevent such event. Oral lesions may occur that to some extent look like lichen planus but lacking the characteristic features of OLP, or that are indistinguishable from OLP clinically but having a distinct cause, e.g. amalgam restoration associated. Such lesions are referred to as oral lichenoid lesions (OLLs). The management of OLP and the various OLLs may be different. Therefore, accurate diagnosis should be aimed at.
Oral health status and self-rated health in 80 year-old community dwelling people
2012
Oral health is an important discipline of health that can affect functioning of health and have severe consequences. The aim of the study was to examine the oral health of the older people and how oral health is associated with self-rated health. The study was a part of Evergreen Project conducted by the University of Jyväskylä. The participants were 80-year-old persons living in the city of Jyväskylä, People who were living in institutions were excluded from the study sample (N= 262, 74 men, 188 women). The study included clinical measures of oral health such as participant’s need for dental care. The data were analyzed by chi square test, t-test and logistic regression analysis. Among men…

Lichen Planus: A Muco-Cutaneous, Nails and Scalp Disorder – Cases Report
2019
Abstract Lichen planus is an autoimmune, itching disorder that involves T lymphocytes, which may interest the skin, mucous membranes and exoskeletons. The presence of lichen manifestations both at the skin, mucous membranes and at the level of the skin attachments (hair and nails) is rarely mentioned in the literature. Although lichen planus may have a self-limiting evolution, early treatment is important in shortening the evolution of the disease and in controlling the symptoms. The therapeutic effects of retinoids (immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, anti-proliferative effects) make them an appropriate choice in the treatment of lichen with (cutaneous-mucosal, nail and planopilaris lesio…

Impact of Narrow Band Imaging in Pre-Operative Assessment of Suspicious Oral Cavity Lesions: A Systematic Review
2021
Introduction: Narrow band imaging (NBI) is a powerful tool that allows visualizing the mucosal and submucosal vasculature. Among the available diagnostic techniques, NBI is one of the most valid for early detection of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Materials and Methods: We carried out a bibliographic search in PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science databases using relevant keywords. Articles selected were screened by two independent authors based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Nine papers were singled out according to the eligibility criteria and included in this review. We investigated the articles for pooled sensitivity, specificity, accuracy, positive predictive value and negativ…
Associations between Mental Well-being and Personality from a Llife Span Perspective
2015
The associations between personality traits and mental well-being are analyzed using data from the Jyväskylä Longitudinal Study of Personality and Social Development (initial N = 369; 53% males). At ages 33/36 to 50, the NEO-PI and Scales of Psychological and Social Well-Being as well as indicators of emotional well-being were administered. At ages 8 and 14, socioemotional behaviors were assessed by teachers. First, both genders show high relative continuity in the Big Five personality traits and mental well-being during mid-adulthood. Second, the developmental course of neuroticism and extraversion during mid-adulthood is similar to that of psychological well-being: over 80% of the partici…
Treatment of oral lichen planus with photodynamic therapy mediated methylene blue: a case report.
2006
Oral lichen planus (OLP) is a common chronic disease of uncertain origin. Many patients with OLP are refractory to all available therapies. The photodynamic therapy (PDT) was used as a possible alternative method in the treatment of lichen planus. Two patients with five oral lichen planus lesions were treated using topical PDT mediated by methylene blue (MB-PDT). The patients were followed up on sessions 3, 7, 15 days and 1 to 9 months after PDT. Clinical improvement was achieved in four lesions. Two lesions showed complete remission, and another two lesions had about 50% clinically improvement 3-9 months after a single session of PDT. No response detected in one lesion. MB-PDT blue seems t…
Inflammatory response elements, glycan, and proteome profiles as salivary biomarkers for the early diagnosis of OSCC
2021
