Mappings of finite distortion : size of the branch set

2018

Abstract We study the branch set of a mapping between subsets of ℝ n {\mathbb{R}^{n}} , i.e., the set where a given mapping is not defining a local homeomorphism. We construct several sharp examples showing that the branch set or its image can have positive measure.

Demand Sharing Inaccuracies in Supply Chains: A Simulation Study

2018

We investigate two main sources of information inaccuracies (i.e., errors and delays) in demand information sharing along the supply chain (SC). Firstly, we perform a systematic literature review on inaccuracy in demand information sharing and its impact on supply chain dynamics. Secondly, we model several SC settings using system dynamics and assess the impact of such information inaccuracies on SC performance. More specifically, we study the impact of four factors (i.e., demand error, demand delay, demand variability, and average lead times) using three SC dynamic performance indicators (i.e., bullwhip effect, inventory variability, and average inventory). The results suggest that demand …

Coupled dark matter-dark energy in light of near Universe observations

2010

Cosmological analysis based on currently available observations are unable to rule out a sizeable coupling among the dark energy and dark matter fluids. We explore a variety of coupled dark matter-dark energy models, which satisfy cosmic microwave background constraints, in light of low redshift and near universe observations. We illustrate the phenomenology of different classes of dark coupling models, paying particular attention in distinguishing between effects that appear only on the expansion history and those that appear in the growth of structure. We find that while a broad class of dark coupling models are effectively models where general relativity (GR) is modified - and thus can b…

Experimental Evaluation of the Performance of a Three-Phase Five-Level Cascaded H-Bridge Inverter by Means FPGA-Based Control Board for Grid Connecte…

2018

Over the last decades, plants devoted to the generation of green energy significantly increased their number, together with the demand of same electrical energy, also stored in battery systems. This fact produced the growth of energy conversion systems with advanced performances with respect to the traditional ones. In this circumstance, multilevel converters play a significant role for their great advantages in performances, flexibility, fault-tolerability, employment of renewable energy sources and storage systems and finally yet importantly reduced filter requirements. In this context, this paper faces the performance of a cascaded H-bridge 5 level inverter in terms of harmonic distortio…

A 9-level three-phase multilevel converter with harmonic mitigation and integrated battery balancing

2019

In this paper, a 9 level three-phase multilevel converter with a harmonic mitigation control method and an integrated battery balancing algorithm for automotive purpose is proposed. Each level of the converter is composed by a buck-boost converter and an h-bridge in cascaded connection. The control algorithm is implemented to achieve the harmonic mitigation on the output voltage waveform and to maintain the battery input voltages balanced. The design and operation of the system is described, and simulation study is reported using Matlab/Simulink platform.

Shaping of a ground state rotational wavepacket by frequency-chirped pulses

2001

0953-4075; A coherent rotational superposition state is produced in the ground vibronic level of N2 through the interaction of the molecule with the electric field vector of a nonresonant laser pulse. This rotational wavepacket is shaped with a linear frequency chirp of the laser field. The structural shape of the rotational coherences shows a strong dependence with the frequency-chirp amplitude. A comparison with a theoretical model allows the interpretation of the observed effects in terms of dephasing of the wavepacket induced by the laser phase distortion. Application of the presented results to the phase characterization of short XUV pulses is suggested.

Primary- and secondary-octahedral distortion factors in bis(1,4-H2-1,2,4-triazolium) pentabromidoantimonate(III) –1,4-H2-1,2,4-triazolium bromide

2015

Abstract The analysis of octahedral distortion in the structure of inorganic–organic (C2H4N3)2[SbBr5]·(C2H4N3)Br (BTPTB) bromidoantimonate(III) determined at 295 and 85 K, supported by the Hirshfeld surface analysis and the data retrieved from the Cambridge Structural Database, is presented. The anionic substructure of BTPTB is built from distorted [SbBr6]3− octahedra that are connected by the cis corners forming polymeric one-dimensional [{SbBr5}n]2n− zig-zag chains running parallel to the a axis and isolated Br− ions. The organic substructure consists of the fully ordered 1,4-H2-1,2,4-triazolium cations. The oppositely charged substructures are linked by the system of N(C)–H⋯Br hydrogen b…

Lattice distortion of hcp solid helium under pressure

2009

The lattice distortion of hcp solid He under pressure is calculated using semiempirical and first-principle approaches. While three-body forces tend to flatten the lattice at all compressions, the effect of pair forces changes from the flattening at small compression to elongation at large one. At large compressions, the lattice distortion due to the triple forces is more than twice as large as those due to pair forces and the lattice is slightly flattened. First-principles results show that over approximately fivefold compressions higher-order, many-body forces become important.

Absolute continuity of mappings with finite geometric distortion

2015

Suppose that ⊂ R n is a domain with n ≥ 2. We show that a continuous, sense-preserving, open and discrete mapping of finite geometric outer distortion with KO(·,f) ∈ L 1/(n 1) loc () is absolutely continuous on almost every line parallel to the coordinate axes. Moreover, if U ⊂ is an open set with N(f,U) 0 depends only on n and on the maximum multiplicity N(f,U).

The Mona Lisa effect: Testing the limits of perceptual robustness vis-à-vis slanted images

2014

We report three experiments that test the limits of the Mona Lisa effect. The gaze of a portrait that is looking at us appears to follow us around as we move with respect to the picture. Even if our position is shifted considerably to the side, or if the picture is severely slanted, do we feel the gaze to be directed at us? We determined the threshold where this effect breaks down to be maximally 70? of picture slant relative to the observer. Different factors modulate this remarkable robustness, among them being the display medium and the nature of the picture. The threshold was considerably lower when the picture was mounted on a physical surface as opposed to a computer simulation of sla…
