‘Women-protective’ language as a tool of exclusion: Debates on oocyte donation in Latvia

2018

‘Women-protective’ language is broadly used as a frame in political discussions on women’s reproductive healthcare and labour rights. This article addresses the use of ‘women-protective’ language in online news articles in the Latvian media about the proposed prohibition of oocyte donation for nulliparous women. The main focus of the recent Latvian debate has not been on the technology itself, but rather on the female body and women’s rationality and decision-making capacity. The results of the analysis show that use of the ‘women-protective’ frame positions women as victims, increases control over the female body and restricts women’s rights to make autonomous decisions. The application of…

Organ Recovery Procedure in Donation After Controlled Circulatory Death with Normothermic Regional Perfusion: State of the Art

2020

The global shortage of organ donors will not be resolved solely by relying on donation after brain death. Expansion to use of donation after controlled circulatory death will be needed to address the shortfall of organs for transplantation. The processes of warm ischemia threaten the viability of organs obtained after controlled circulatory death, but these can be minimized by well-organized donation pathways and new techniques of in situ organ preservation, such as normothermic regional perfusion. The use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) devices for normothermic regional perfusion in liver transplantation can help reduce rates of biliary complications, ischemic type biliary le…

Rapporti di reggenza? Una descrizione ambivalente nella tradizione grammaticale tardoantica e medioevale

2023

This study aims to shed light on the historical development of a linguistic theory with reference to syntax in Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages, through an investigation of grammatical works related to Donatus, since a reflection on syntax emerges from the commentaries and from other grammatical works connected with his artes. This investigation focuses on the description of the government relation between praepositio and casus, through a preliminary collection of the occurrences of both terms with the Cross Database Searchtool of Brepols Publishers as a digital tool, and based on a textual analysis of the de praepositione sections included in a selection of grammatical works ranging from…

Effect of plant species on water balance in a pilot-scale horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetland planted with Arundo donax L. and Cyperus alt…

2015

Abstract In constructed wetland systems (CWs) for wastewater treatment, evapotranspiration (ET) is the most important water balance component in arid and semi-arid regions, where high performance levels are needed when treating contaminants and where it is also vital to preserve as much water as possible for reuse in irrigation. This study shows the results of a series of water balance measurements obtained between 2012 and 2013 from a pilot HSSF system in the West of Sicily (Italy). The system was made by two separate vegetated units: one with Arundo donax L. (giant reed) and the other with Cyperus alternifolius L. (umbrella sedge), and fed with urban wastewater following secondary treatme…
