The Vesalian movement in sixteenth-century Spain.

1979

In the middle of the sixteenth-century under the direct influence of Vesalius's works there arose in Spain a movement devoted to the renewal of anatomical knowledge. It was one of the initial forces in the spread of the Vesalian reform, but in spite of that it has been almost completely ignored by specialized historical research.' The purpose of this article is to provide a general study of the movement with special emphasis on the conditions which determined its development. In the first place I should make it clear that the renewal in question did not arise from the relationship that Vesalius maintained throughout

Learning from the Past : The Women Writers Project and Thirty Years of Humanities Text Encoding

2017

In recent years, intensified attention in the humanities has been paid to data: to data modeling, data visualization, “big data”. The Women Writers Project has dedicated significant effort over the past thirty years to creating what Christoph Schöch calls “smart clean data”: a moderate-sized collection of early modern women’s writing, carefully transcribed and corrected, with detailed digital text encoding that has evolved in response to research and changing standards for text representation. But that data—whether considered as a publication through Women Writers Online, or as a proof of the viability of text encoding approaches like those expressed in the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) Gu…

Anverso y reverso de la nación: el discurso de la antiespañolada durante los primeros años 40

2015

During the immediate postwar years, different voices from the new francoist regime produced a discourse relatively spontaneous but, at the same time, recognizable enough addressed to denounce what they considered as an unacceptable deformation of the Spanishness. Basically, and in spite of the ideological differences amongst its producers, the critic raised from a common and painful nationalism which pointed at the foreign look —specially, the French romantic look— as creator and supporter of what they called España de pandereta. This look supposed a distortion and mystification of Spain as a picturesque nation that resulted in the españolada. The aim of this article is to explore this disc…

Historia urbana y mezzogiorno de Italia en la Edad Moderna: propuesta de un cuestionario

1998

The history of urbanization has barely been analyzed for the Mezzogiorno in Italy. This has partly been due to the persistence of stereotypes in Italian historiography, and partly due to the current definition of city functions. The article results from a meeting of specialists in Early Modern southern Italian history organized to undertake the rigorous and detailed study of the common features and the differences within the urban systems of the Mezzogiorno, in order to synthesize the specific character of urbanization in southern Italy over the long term. The author outlines the main areas under study and establishes its methodological foundations and first hypotheses.

The immunogenicity of human and murine cytomegaloviruses.

2000

Cytomegaloviruses are strictly host-species-specific. During an aeon of co-evolution, virus and host have found an arrangement: the productive and cytopathogenic cycle of viral gene expression is held in check by the host's immune response. As a consequence, cytomegalovirus disease is restricted to the immunocompromised host. The virus has evolved strategies to avoid its elimination and eventually hides itself in a silent state, referred to as 'viral latency'. Redundant molecular mechanisms have been identified by which cytomegaloviruses interfere with antigen presentation pathways to 'evade' immune control. In the annual period covered by this review, the IE1 protein was revisited as an im…

Identification of a Conserved HLA-A2-Restricted Decapeptide from the IE1 Protein (pUL123) of Human Cytomegalovirus

2002

Abstract Control of human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) infection is predominantly mediated by cytolytic CD8 + T lymphocytes (CTL). Among the roughly 200 HCMV-encoded polypeptides, the tegument protein pp65 (ppUL83) and the nonstructural IE1 protein are considered to be dominant CTL targets. Yet the importance of CTL against IE1 for protective immunity against HCMV reactivation and disease has remained elusive. Analyses have been difficult, as all MHC class I presented peptides of IE1 defined so far are located in parts of the protein that are variable between viral strains. In this study a conserved decameric peptide from IE1 (P6, IE1 354–363 ) that bound to HLA-A2 was identified. Using peptide-p…

La vocalidad del violín en el norte de Italia en torno a 1600

2021

Throughout the present research I intend to demonstrate the powerful link between the vocal practice in accompanied monody and the way Early Italian violin music ought to be interpreted. Due to the scarce amount of articulation and ornamentation in this music, I consider that historical criteria should be found in order to back up the subjective choices in its performance. According to this, I focus on reviewing sources that describe the vocal practice around 1600, but also contemporary sources in which we can find instructions addressed to bow instruments. Besides, a catalogue of articulations and ornamentations present in early editions of printed violin music is attached. Last, I comment…

Comparing Cybersecurity Information Exchange Models and Standards for the Common Secure Information Management Framework

2021

Cyber threats have increased in spite of formal economic integration in the world. Decision-makers and authorities need to respond to the growing challenge of cyberthreats by increasing cooperation. Information is one of the main facilities when the objective is to prevent hybrid threats at the EU level and between the western countries. The main purpose of the study is to find out separating and combining factors concerning existing cyber information sharing models and information management frameworks in western countries. The aim is also to find out crucial factors, which affect the utilization of a common Early Warning System for the ECHO stakeholders. The main findings are that unclear…

Multiwavelength monitoring of BD+53°2790 , the optical counterpart to 4U 2206+54

2005

We present the results of our long-term monitoring of BD+53 2790, the optical counterpart to the X-ray source 4U~2206+54. Unlike previous studies that classify the source as a Be/X-ray binary, we find that its optical and infrared properties differ from those of typical Be stars: the variability of the V/R ratio is not cyclical; there are variations in the shape and strength of the H$\alpha$ emission line on timescales less than 1 day; and no correlation between the EW and the IR magnitudes or colors is seen. Our observations suggest that BD+53 2790 is very likely a peculiar O9.5V star. In spite of exhaustive searches we cannot find any significant modulation in any emission line parameter …

Targeting IL-6 signalling in early rheumatoid arthritis is followed by Th1 and Th17 suppression and Th2 expansion.

2014

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the in vitro and ex-vivo effect of IL-6 inhibition on the balance between Th1, Th2, Th17 and Treg cells. METHODS: Ten consecutive adult patients with active early rheumatoid arthritis (ERA) and ten healthy volunteers were included in the study. The percentages of Th1, Th2, Th17 and Treg cells were analysed by flow cytometry in the peripheral blood mononuclear cells obtained from controls and from RA patients at the time of first evaluation and just before the third TCZ infusion. The in vitro effect of TCZ on the different subsets of CD4+ T cells and the expression levels of Th1, Th2, Th17 and Treg-related cytokines was also assessed. RESULTS: Treatment with TCZ, b…
