Improving the Traditional Measures of Agglomeration with Neighbouring Effects
2009
The traditional measures of concentration are based on the hypothesis that agglomeration forces among plants appear only inside of a single area and they do not have any effect outside of it. Instead, it is reasonable thinking to the existence of factors exerting their effects not only within the territory where they were originated but, in the meantime, producing spillovers into neighbouring areas. Building on this assumption, this paper contributes to the agglomeration literature by proposing an extension of the traditional agglomeration measures that account for externalities that cross the barriers of the geographical units under analysis. So, we want to examine the spatial dependence a…
Nel gioco grande dei poteri criminali
2006
Economic moralities in self-organised alternative economies : the Finnish cases of ridesharing and timebanking
2020
PurposeThis paper explores economic moralities in self-organised alternative economies and argues that the diverse economies approach is particularly useful in elaborating the self-understandings of such economic communities. The analysis focuses on two types of alternative economies in Finland: ridesharing and timebanking.Design/methodology/approachThrough qualitative data, the paper looks into moments of negotiation where economic moralities of self-organised alternative economies are explicitly debated. The main research data consists of social media conversations, supplemented by a member survey for the participants of the studied timebank. The data are analysed through theory-guided qu…
Use of functionals in linearization and composite estimation with application to two-sample survey data
2009
An important problem associated with two-sample surveys is the estimation of nonlinear functions of finite population totals such as ratios, correlation coefficients or measures of income inequality. Computation and estimation of the variance of such complex statistics are made more difficult by the existence of overlapping units. In one-sample surveys, the linearization method based on the influence function approach is a powerful tool for variance estimation. We introduce a two-sample linearization technique that can be viewed as a generalization of the one-sample influence function approach. Our technique is based on expressing the parameters of interest as multivariate functionals of fi…
On the usage of joint diagonalization in multivariate statistics
2022
Scatter matrices generalize the covariance matrix and are useful in many multivariate data analysis methods, including well-known principal component analysis (PCA), which is based on the diagonalization of the covariance matrix. The simultaneous diagonalization of two or more scatter matrices goes beyond PCA and is used more and more often. In this paper, we offer an overview of many methods that are based on a joint diagonalization. These methods range from the unsupervised context with invariant coordinate selection and blind source separation, which includes independent component analysis, to the supervised context with discriminant analysis and sliced inverse regression. They also enco…
An Overview on European Union Sustainable Competitiveness
2014
Abstract The last few years have emphasized a continuing concern of many institutions, nations, companies for sustainable development. The recent literature brings into attention the concept of sustainable competitiveness beyond sustainable development. The main idea of sustainable competitiveness is reflected by the searching of a model that could balance economic prosperity, environmental issues and social sustainability. In this context, is shaping the sustainability-adjusted global competitiveness index that take into consideration two new dimensions – environmental and social. Practically, the triple bottom line concept will be extrapolated from the microeconomic level to the macroecon…
Examining the Impact of ICT on Sustainable Development: A Data-Driven Narrative
2021
Considering the challenges of sustainable development and the mixed prescriptions being offered by the use of digital technologies, we present a data-driven narrative of how ICT development impacts the sustainable growth of economies. The analysis is based on historical panel data from 39 economies across the developed and developing economies. The industry-standard CRISP-DM methodology was applied as it is flexible, robust, and offers a practical approach for data analytics. The findings reveal that there are differentiated outcomes in terms of sustainable growth among high-income and low-income economies. This poses legitimate questions as to whether low-income economies will be able to m…
Integrazione di celle fotovoltaiche ibride nel vetromattone
2012
2022
From many points of view, the 30-year period from 1990 to 2020 was a period of great change that led, as a consequence, to a continuous reshaping of public policies for the tourism sector and related industries. The Tourism Startegic Plan for Italy, is based on a great heritage of ideas and proposals, elaborated with a process of wide sharing, which has not exhausted its function with approval but will continue after the Covid and in the years to come. The Plan, in fact, was conceived as a constantly evolving "living" organism. Moreover, it adopts a strategic vision that, starting from the full awareness of the opportunities of the tourist development of our country, identifies four objectiv…
