Differentiation, differentiated integration and disintegration in a ‘post-Brexit-era’

2019

In contrast to the ‘ever closer Union among the peoples of Europe’ invoked in the preamble of the Treaty of Rome, Frank Schimmelfennig and Thomas Winzen ponder whether the European Union (EU) is ‘growing ever looser’. Differentiation can take various forms which are often intertwined, such as functional, institutional, spatial/territorial as well as temporal differentiation. In 1998, Petersen studied Denmark’s integration policy in what he called a ‘dilemma’ between influence capability and stress sensitivity. With the Great Recession of 2007This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book 2008, the EU entered a new multi…

Location theories and business location decision: A micro-spatial investigation of a nonmetropolitan area in Canada

2016

This paper draws on location theories to statistically identify the relationship between the location of individual business establishments and the characterization of their local economic environment. Taking a micro-spatial perspective, the paper develops indicators from distance-based measures (DBM) to serve as independent variables in a discrete choice model (DCM). Using a 2006 database of individual business establishments in the Lower-St-Lawrence region—a coherent, nonmetropolitan subsystem of cities in the province of Québec, Canada—we provide an empirical analysis of the determinants of individual establishments’ location decisions in relation to their main economic activity within a…

Latvian Migrants in Great Britain: ‘The Great Departure’, Transnational Identity and Long Distance Belonging

2019

AbstractThis chapter explores the transnational aspects of identity and the long distance belonging of Latvian migrants in Great Britain. In particular, it focuses on the discourses and practices of long distance belonging to Latvia. The article is based on a comparative analysis of The Emigrant Communities of Latvia survey data as well as semi-structured interviews with Latvian migrants in Great Britain. The analytical sections are organised so as to discuss the three main analytical contexts of long distance belonging: ethno-cultural, political and social. In the ethno-cultural context, migrants who identify themselves as ethnic Latvians rediscover and strengthen their links to the Latvia…

Should all the world be taxed?

1997

Governments are beginning to fear that the establishment of the “information society” will cause their revenue from taxation to shrink: economic activities in the virtual world of the Internet could escape the application of value added tax. Are these fears justified? Would a “bit tax” solve the problem?

Questions de durabilité économique

2016

Biopartitioning micellar separation methods: modelling drug absorption

2003

The search for new pharmacologically active compounds in drug discovery programmes often neglects biopharmaceutical properties as drug absorption. As a result, poor biopharmaceutical characteristics constitute a major reason for the low success rate for candidates in clinical development. Since the cost of drug development is many times larger than the cost of drug discovery, predictive methodologies aiding the selection of bioavailable drug candidates are of profound significance. This paper has been focussed on recent developments and applications of chromatographic systems, particularly those systems based on amphiphilic structures, in the frame of alternative approaches for estimating t…

On the Non-Intrusive Load Monitoring in dwellings: a feasibility perspective

2021

The oncoming modernization process of the power grids, driven above all by decarbonisation objectives and the continuous improvement of digital technologies, is encouraging active participation in the electricity market by consumers through the Demand-Response mechanism. From this perspective, the introduction of smart meters and energy consumption monitoring devices plays a fundamental role, being able to give benefits to consumers, suppliers and the electricity grid itself. This paper proposes a supervised method of non-intrusive load monitoring (NILM) based on the recognition of patterns in the time domain with the Dynamic Time Warping algorithm which is suitable for low-cost smart meter…

A rational expectations model for simulation and policy evaluation of the Spanish economy

2010

This paper presents the model used for simulation purposes within the Spanish Ministry of Economic Affairs and Finance. REMS (a Rational Expectations Model for the Spanish economy) is a small open economy dynamic general equilibrium model in the vein of the New-Neoclassical-Keynesian synthesis models, with a strongly micro-founded system of equations. In the long run REMS behaves in accordance with the neoclassical growth model. In the short run, it incorporates nominal, real and financial frictions. Real frictions include adjustment costs in consumption (via habits in consumption and rule-of-thumb households) and investment into physical capital. Due to financial frictions, there is no per…

Mediterranean Borders and Diaspora

2020

“And So Europe Dehumanized Itself”, the expression used by Toni Morrison regarding slavery, seems to have returned dramatically to current affairs. We seem to have plunged into a dystopian present in which the European Union, instead of governing the disruptive global migrations through appropriate policies, has expressed such nervousness – both at the popular and institutional levels – to give rise, in an unstoppable crescendo, to practices inspired by xenophobia and racism. It has led to the inhuman treatment of migrants (I refer both to shipwrecks at sea, a real massacre and to the torture and torture reserved for them in Libya with the complicity of European governments) and finally to …

From Marketing Mix to e-Marketing Mix: a literature overview and classification

2009

The marketing mix paradigm, in its famous version of the 4Ps, went all the way through the evolution of marketing theory: from the marketing concept, through relationship marketing, to digital economy, being object of discussion both in academic literature and managerial practice. If it is a fact that the 4Ps marketing mix is a milestone of marketing theory, it is also true that the evolution of business contexts has created, in many fields, the need to review the "controllable factors" which form the marketing mix. The digital business represents the more recent of the business contexts and the one with the greater needs of differentiation of the mix. Throughout this evolutionary process, …
