Prognostic Impact of let-7e MicroRNA and Its Target Genes in Localized High-Risk Intestinal GIST: A Spanish Group for Research on Sarcoma (GEIS) Study

2020

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small non-coding RNAs that negatively regulate gene expression at the post-transcriptional level, and they have been described as being associated with tumor prognosis. Here, miRNA profiling was planned to explore new molecular prognostic biomarkers in localized intestinal high-risk GIST. Paraffin tumor blocks of 14 and 86 patients were used in the discovery and expansion sets, respectively. GeneChip miRNA v3.0 was employed to identify the miRNAs differentially expressed between relapsed and non-relapsed patient samples, which were validated in the expansion set, by qRT-PCR. RT2 Profiler PCR Array was used for the screening of let-7e targets. Expression levels were co…

Does self-efficacy influence academic results? A separable-effect mediation analysis

2021

In causal mediation analysis, natural effects are identified only under strict assumptions involving cross-world counterfactuals. An alternative approach recently developed, called separable, allows for identification of mediational effects in a wide range of models, since it relies on weaker assumptions than those required by natural effects. In this paper, the separable-effect approach is revised and an application to data is presented.

Entrepreneurs (novices vs. experts) and investors: Interaction and rationality dynamics (effectual vs. causal)

2019

The paper studies the mechanisms that govern the interactions between the entrepreneur (novice or expert) and the specific investors of emerging firms (business angels (BAs) and venture-capital firms (VCs)). Combining both literatures on entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial finance, our aim is to understand if the rationalities of these three actors help them or not to interact, and, to study how they influence each other during the firm's growth. In order to do so, we undertake two processual case studies. Our results show that effectual rationality underlines the interaction between the entrepreneur and the BAs at the creation of the firm, whilst causal rationality is helpful in the searc…

On Ignoring the Random Effects Assumption in Multilevel Models: Review, Critique, and Recommendations

2019

Entities such as individuals, teams, or organizations can vary systematically from one another. Researchers typically model such data using multilevel models, assuming that the random effects are uncorrelated with the regressors. Violating this testable assumption, which is often ignored, creates an endogeneity problem thus preventing causal interpretations. Focusing on two-level models, we explain how researchers can avoid this problem by including cluster means of the Level 1 explanatory variables as controls; we explain this point conceptually and with a large-scale simulation. We further show why the common practice of centering the predictor variables is mostly unnecessary. Moreover, …

Exploring twitter for csr disclosure: influence of ceo and firm characteristics in latin american companies

2018

Social networks, which are characterised by accessibility and interactivity, offer great potential for dialogue between companies and stakeholders, for example as platforms for publishing information on aspects of corporate social responsibility (CSR). In this paper, we use a synthetic index to analyse levels of CSR disclosure via Twitter, and identify explanatory variables of this disclosure by studying the demographic characteristics of the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and of the company. This synthetic index was based on data for 93 companies located in the four countries of the Pacific Alliance (Chile, Colombia, Mexico, and Peru), using categories based on the 2016 Global Reporting Ini…

Financial Aspects of Cervical Disc Arthroplasty: A Narrative Review of Recent Literature

2020

Recently, there has been significant interest in understanding the cost-effectiveness of treatments in spine surgery as health care systems in the United States move toward value-based care and alternative payment models. Previous studies have shown comparable outcomes of cervical disc arthroplasty (CDA) and anterior cervical discectomy fusion; however, there is a lack of consensus on the cost-effectiveness of CDA to support full adoption. Evidence of the limitations of these cost-analysis studies also exists in the literature, including industry funding, potential selection bias, and varying methods of calculating value. The goal of this narrative review is to provide an overview of the co…

Mössbauer-Active Transition Metals Other than Iron

2010

The previous chapters are exclusively devoted to the measurements and interpretation of 57Fe spectra of various iron-containing systems. Iron is, by far, the most extensively explored element in the field of chemistry compared with all other Mossbauer-active elements because the Mossbauer effect of 57Fe is very easy to observe and the spectra are, in general, well resolved and they reflect important information about bonding and structural properties. Besides iron, there are a good number of other transition metals suitable for Mossbauer spectroscopy which is, however, less extensively studied because of technical and/or spectral resolution problems. In recent years, many of these difficult…

Kinetically Controlled Stepwise Self-Assembly of AuI-Metallopeptides in Water

2018

The combination of attractive supramolecular interactions of a hydrophobic AuI-metallopeptide with the shielding effect of flexible oligoethylene glycol chains provides access to a stepwise self-assembly of a AuI-metalloamphiphile in water. Kinetic control of the supramolecular polymer morphology is achieved using a temperature-dependent assembly protocol, which yields low dispersity supramolecular polymers (metastable state I) or helical bundled nanorods (state II).

1981

Polyamides 3 containing constant and definite numbers of oxyethylene units were prepared by condensation polymerization of suitable diamines and diesters, both of which containing oxyethylene units. The polymer structure was determined by IR and 1H NMR spectroscopy. Almost all polymers are crystals melting at ≈ 40°C and show a complexation ability towards alkalimetal cations. It was also found that diesters containing oxyethylene units show a higher condensation rate than alkylene diesters, which is explained by an inductive effect of the ether oxygene. However, no remarkable difference in the condensation rate was found between diamines containing oxyethylene units and the corresponding al…

Towards highly luminescent phenylene vinylene films

1996

Abstract Fluorescence and electronic absorption spectra, fluorescence decay curves and fluorescence quantum yields of a series of oligo (p-phenylene vinylenes) are investigated in solution, nanoaggregates and vapour-deposited or cast ultrathin films. The film constituting molecules are varied in chain length and modified by electron donating and withdrawing substituents and bulky alkyl spacers. PPP-MO calculations serve to rationalize the resulting spectral changes. In dilute solutions, fluorescence yields of the short oligomers with alkyl or oxyalkyl substituents approach the region of unity. The yields decrease with chain length, reaching a long-chain limit of ΦF=0.4–0.7. Introduction of …
