Numerical model for composite material with polymer matrix reinforced by carbon nanotubes

2008

Due to the high stiffness and strength, as well as their ability to act as conductors, carbon nanotubes are under intense investigation as fillers in polymeric materials. The nature of the carbon nanotube/polymer bonding and the curvature of the carbon nanotubes within the polymer have arisen as particular factors in the efficacy of the carbon nanotubes to actually provide any enhanced stiffness or strength to the nanocomposite. Here the effects of carbon nanotube curvature and interface interaction with the matrix on the nanocomposite stiffness are investigated using nanomechanical analysis. In particular, the effects of poor bonding and thus poor shear lag load transfer to the carbon nano…

Interaction in POSS-poly(ethylene-co-acrylic acid) nanocomposites

2013

Use of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) in polymer-based nanocomposites is promising for the design of high-performance materials for several applications. In this study, nanocomposites based on ethylene-acrylic acid (EAA) copolymer and POSS molecules were prepared by melt mixing. In particular, partial cage POSS with different pendent organic groups was used to investigate the interaction between the –OH groups of POSS and the acrylic functionalities of the matrix. All nanocomposites were characterized by mechanical, rheological, thermal and spectroscopic analyses. In addition, PE-POSS compounds were prepared under the same processing conditions for sake of comparison. The POSS …

Photoluminescence waveguiding in CdSe and CdTe QDs–PMMA nanocomposite films

2011

In this paper, active planar waveguides based on the incorporation of CdSe and CdTe nanocrystal quantum dots in a polymer matrix are demonstrated. In the case of doping the polymer with both types of quantum dots, the nanocomposite film guides both emitted colors, green (550 nm, CdTe) and orange (600 nm, CdSe). The optical pumping laser can be coupled not only with a standard end-fire coupling system, but also directing the beam to the surface of the sample, indicating a good absorption cross-section and waveguide properties. To achieve these results, a study of the nanocomposite optical properties as a function of the nanocrystal concentration is presented and the optimum conditions are fo…

The Mössbauer effect and collective motions in glass-forming liquids and polymeric networks

1994

Glass-forming liquids, synthetic polymers and biopolymers share essential properties. Dynamic processes in these complex systems are characterized by cooperative motions with wide distributions of time scales, which manifest themselves in broad quasielastic lines in the Mossbauer spectrum. In this article, the application of the Mossbauer effect to the study of structural dynamics in complex systems is discussed.

Stabilisation of LDPE cross-linked in the presence of peroxides III. Mass spectrometric study of chemical changes taking place in the n-octadecane–di…

2000

Abstract An attempt was made to identify the products of the reaction between dicumyl peroxide and Irganox 1081, carried out in n -octadecane (saturated hydrocarbon), in conditions of fast decomposition of the peroxide (180°C, 5 min). Mass spectrometry (MS) was employed to find m/z values of molecular and fragment ions in analyses of the components ( n -octadecane, dicumyl peroxide, Irganox 1081) and of the following systems: n -octadecane–dicumyl peroxide, n -octadecane–Irganox 1081 and n -octadecane–dicumyl peroxide–Irganox 1081, after holding them at a temperature of 180°C for 5 min. The tendency of sulphur in Irganox 1081 to oxidise, specifically in the presence of dicumyl peroxide, was…

Spectrophotometric study on the thermodynamics of binding of α- and β-cyclodextrin towards some p-nitrobenzene derivativesElectronic supplementary in…

2003

Binding properties of native α- and β-cyclodextrin towards some nitrobenzene derivatives have been studied by means of UV-vis spectrophotometry. The former host is able to form complexes having 1 : 1 and 1 : 2 stoichiometric ratios with these guests, while only 1 : 1 complexes are detected with the latter host. A careful analysis of the thermodynamic parameters for complexation equilibria, under the perspective of the enthalpy–entropy compensation effect, reveals that binding abilities of the two different hosts are subject to different features.

Parity violation energy of biomolecules - III: RNA

2006

The energy of parity-violation associated with a typical DNA double helix is estimated with ab initio techniques. It is shown that weak-nuclear interactions do not favor the formation of the double helices found in nature. Possible implications regarding the potential effect of parity-violation interactions on the evolution of biological homochirality are discussed.

The unperturbed dimensions parameter KΘ is one of the most important characteristics of a polymer chain. For binary systems (polymer/solvent) and mostly for ternary systems (polymer/solvent(1)/solvent(2)) the KΘ values show large discrepancies with respect to those under thetaconditions in a single solvent. These discrepancies can be explained by considering that the interaction parameter χ (and consequently the coil dimensions or the number of intramolecular contacts between polymer segments) changes with molecular weight M. Assuming this dependency, a modified Stockmayer-Fixman equation is proposed from which a unique value of KΘ for a given polymer, independent of M, is obtained. The use…

Conformational properties of oxazoline-amino acids

2016

Abstract Oxazoline-amino acids (Xaa-Ozn) occur in natural peptides of potentially important bioactivity. The conformations of the model compounds: Ac-(S)-Ala-Ozn(4R-Me), Ac-(S)-Ala-Ozn(4S–Me), and (gauche+, gauche−, anti) Ac-(S)-Val-Ozn(4R-Me) were studied at meta-hybrid M06-2X/6–311++G(d,p) method including solvent effect. Boc- l -Ala- l -Ozn-4-COOMe and Boc- l -Val- l -Ozn-4-COOMe were synthesized and studied by FT-IR and NMR-NOE methods. The conformations in crystal state were gathered from the Cambridge Structural Data Base. The main conformational feature of the oxazoline amino acids is the conformation β2 (ϕ,ψ ∼ −161°, −6°), which predominates in weakly polar environment and still is …

"Dormant" secondary metal-alkyl complexes are not omnipresent.

2006

This theoretical study was inspired by the perpetual debate over the so-called “dormancy” of the active sites in propylene polymerization, i.e., a drop in their activity after a regioerror (2,1-insertion), which was reported to occur in many (although not all) catalytic systems. To explore the range of possible situations, we have selected two homogeneous systems of fundamentally different structure: an octahedral system of C 2 symmetry with a tetradentate O N N O ligand and a bridged indenyl catalyst. This choice was not accidental; it is in these two systems where the experimentalists cannot reach a consensus about dormancy. Our density-functional theory calculations explain why in certa…
