Measurement of Solar pp-neutrino flux with Borexino: results and implications

International audience; Measurement of the Solar pp-neutrino flux completed the measurement of Solar neutrino fluxes from the pp-chain of reactions in Borexino experiment. The result is in agreement with the prediction of the Standard Solar Model and the MSW/LMA oscillation scenario. A comparison of the total neutrino flux from the Sun with Solar luminosity in photons provides a test of the stability of the Sun on the 10(5) years time scale, and sets a strong limit on the power production by the unknown energy sources in the Sun.
Improved measurement of $^8$B solar neutrinos with $1.5 kt·y$ of Borexino exposure

We report on an improved measurement of the $^8$B solar neutrino interaction rate with the Borexino experiment at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso. Neutrinos are detected via their elastic scattering on electrons in a large volume of liquid scintillator. The measured rate of scattered electrons above 3 MeV of energy is $0.223\substack{+0.015 \\ -0.016}\,(stat)\,\substack{+0.006 \\ -0.006}\,(syst)$ cpd/100 t, which corresponds to an observed solar neutrino flux assuming no neutrino flavor conversion of $\Phi\substack{\rm ES \\ ^8\rm B}=2.57\substack{+0.17 \\ -0.18}(stat)\substack{+0.07\\ -0.07}(syst)\times$10$^6$ cm$^{-2}\,$s$^{-1}$. National audience; Dans ce travail, une méthodologie de transport d'incertitudes à travers les différentes échelles d'observation des matériaux composites : (i) micro (fibres et matrice), (ii) méso (pli), (iii) macro (matériau stratifié) est proposée. L'objectif est d'intégrer à l'échelle macro (celle du calcul de structure) l'effet des incertitudes venant de l'échelle micro et celle des incertitudes introduites à chacune des échelles méso et macro. La démarche proposée s'appuie sur l'élaboration dès l'échelle micro de distributions statistiques bâties sur l'analyse morphologique et obtenues grâce à la génération de matériaux virtuels.

Globalisation and metropolisation in modern economies induce some locational strategies of knowledge based activities towards cities and deeply increase trade and move of ideas across cities. In that context, we study the way knowledge spillovers have influenced the economic growth of 82 European Metropolises over the 1990-2005 period. We model knowledge spillovers across cities according to three specific interaction patterns depending either on geography or on global advanced services or thought a combination of these patterns. We show that the mixed pattern matters the best for economic growth of cities in Europe.

Rain is one of the main causes of moisture damage to the building envelope, leading to problems such as rain penetration, frost and salt damage, discoloration by leaching, soiling by differential washing, etc. The potential of deterioration due to rain depends on the façade material, the junction of building envelope components, the overall geometry of the building, but also the presence or absence of modulation on the façade. Chemoselective, Substrate-directed Fluorination of Functionalized Cyclopentane β-Amino Acids

This work describes a substrate-directed fluorination of some highly functionalized cyclopentane derivatives. The cyclic products incorporating CH2 F or CHF2 moieties in their structure have been synthesized from diexo- or diendo-norbornene β-amino acids following a stereocontrolled strategy. The synthetic study was based on an oxidative transformation of the ring carbon-carbon double bond of the norbornene β-amino acids, followed by transformation of the resulted "all cis" and "trans" diformyl intermediates by fluorination with "chemodifferentiation".

In this paper, an analytical model for the design of axially loaded strengthened RC columns with steel angles and battens is presented. Cases of directly loaded and not directly loaded steel angles are considered. The model considers the contribution in confinement pressures caused by transverse battens and steel angles and the contribution in terms of the load-carrying capacity of steel angles subjected to axial force and the bending moment. An experimental investigation on the compressive behavior of eight short, confined, RC columns externally strengthened with steel angles and steel battens with various pitches was carried out, and has been utilized as support for the analytical model. …
