Organisation and Efficiency of Education Systems: Some empirical findings
2000
Using a sample of countries chosen for their similar level of development, this article shows the extent to which the organisation of primary and secondary education differs from one country to another, notably with respect to the way in which systems differentiate and select pupils for specialised curricula. It also explores the question of whether an education system that sorts pupils at a very early age is more cost-effective than a system that does not sort pupils during compulsory education. The stylised description of national education systems is based on various sources of information. The data used in the cost analysis come from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Develo…
Effective hamiltonian approach to the non-Markovian dynamics in a spin-bath
2010
We investigate the dynamics of a central spin that is coupled to a bath of spins through a non-uniform distribution of coupling constants. Simple analytical arguments based on master equation techniques as well as numerical simulations of the full von Neumann equation of the total system show that the short-time damping and decoherence behaviour of the central spin can be modelled accurately through an effective Hamiltonian involving a single effective coupling constant. The reduced short-time dynamics of the central spin is thus reproduced by an analytically solvable effective Hamiltonian model.
Reliable TDC position determination: a comparison of different thermodynamic methods through experimental data and simulations
2008
It is known to internal combustion researcher that the correct determination of the crank position when the piston is at Top Dead Centre (TDC) is very important, since an error of 1 crank angle degree (CAD) can cause up to a 10% evaluation error on indicated mean effective pressure (IMEP) and a 25% error on the heat released by the combustion: the TDC position should be then known within a precision of 0.1 CAD. This task can be accomplished by means of a dedicated capacitive sensor, which allows a measurement within the required 0.1 degrees precision. Such a sensor has a substantial cost and its use is not really fast; a different approach can be followed using a thermodynamic method, whose…
High-density genomic characterization of native Croatian sheep breeds
2022
A recent comprehensive genomic analysis based on 50K SNP profiles has shown that the regional Balkan sheep populations have considerable genetic overlap but are distinctly different from surrounding breeds. All eight Croatian sheep breeds were represented by a small number of individuals per breed. Here, we genotyped 220 individuals representing the native Croatian sheep breeds (Istrian Sheep, Krk Island Sheep, Cres Island Sheep, Rab Island Sheep, Lika Pramenka, Pag Island Sheep, Dalmatian Pramenka, Dubrovnik Sheep) and mouflon using the Ovine Infinium® HD SNP BeadChip (606, 006 SNPs). In addition, we included publicly available Balkan Pramenka and other Mediterranean sheep breeds. Our anal…
Critical factors influencing international sporting success of the Philippines : the athletes' perspective
2017
The aim of this study is to contribute to the understanding of the recent declining performance of the Philippines in international sporting competitions by identifying and evaluating relevant factors that are critical to its international success through the perspective of the national elite athletes. An evaluation of the organizational effectiveness of the national sports governing bodies provides explanation to the poor performance of the country in major international competitions such as the Southeast Asian (SEA)Games. One of the most recent approaches used in measuring organizational effectiveness is the Sport Policy factors Leading to International Sporting Success (SPLISS) model. Th…
Surgery for obesity.
2005
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Bariatric surgery today is the only effective therapy for morbid obesity. Commonly performed procedures include adjustable gastric banding and vertical banded gastroplasty, variations of the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, biliopancreatic diversion or duodenal switch, and mixed procedures. This review discusses key issues in the surgical management of morbid obesity. RECENT FINDINGS The two most common bariatric procedures performed worldwide are laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding and laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. Controversy exists regarding the best surgical procedure. Weight loss decreases according to the procedures performed in following decreasing order: bili…
Real-world effectiveness of ombitasvir/paritaprevir/ritonavir±dasabuvir±ribavirin in patients with hepatitis C virus genotype 1 or 4 infection: A met…
2017
The direct-acting antiviral regimen of ombitasvir (OBV)/paritaprevir (PTV)/ritonavir (r) ± dasabuvir (DSV) ± ribavirin (RBV) demonstrated high rates of sustained viral response at post-treatment week 12 (SVR12) in clinical trials for treatment of hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotypes (GT) 1 and 4. To confirm the effectiveness of this regimen in the real world, we conducted meta-analyses of published literature on 30 April 2016. Freeman-Tukey transformation determined the SVR rate within GTs 1a, 1b, and 4, as well as specific SVR rates by cirrhosis or prior treatment experience status. Rates of virologic relapse, hepatic decompensation, drug discontinuation, and serious adverse events were also …
PCR-DGGE fingerprints of microbial succession during a manufacture of traditional water buffalo mozzarella cheese.

Aims: To monitor the process and the starter effectiveness recording a series of fingerprints of the microbial diversity occurring at different steps of mozzarella cheese manufacture and to investigate the involvement of the natural starter to the achievement of the final product. Methods and Results: Samples of raw milk, natural whey culture (NWC) used as starter, curd after ripening and final product were collected during a mozzarella cheese manufacture. Total microbial DNA was directly extracted from the dairy samples as well as bulk colonies collected from the plates…
Variables that Modulate Home Care Effectiveness in Patients with Chronic Cardiovascular Disease
2019
Introduction: The growing population of patients with chronic cardiovascular disease has many complex biomedical and psychosocial needs and requires an integrated teamwork approach. There is a need to develop a model for assessing the effectiveness of home care in patients with chronic cardiovascular disease, which would take the needs of informal caregivers into account. The purpose of the study was to determine the variables affecting the level of effectiveness of home care, defined as the co-occurrence of high: quality of life (QoL), health behaviours and met needs.Subjects and method: The study involved 193 patients under the care of district nurses and 161 informal caregivers. The study…
Socioeconomic effects and the role of public spending decomposition on income mobility: a moderated regression model
2022
The aim of this paper is to investigate, empirically, what components of public spending imply a decreasing effect on income mobility, and what components create income opportunities, also discussing the role of government effectiveness. The role of the components of government expenditure is analysed in the association between intergenerational income mobility and socioeconomic characteristics, which are relevant for the life chances of children. Using the Global Database on Intergenerational Mobility, containing estimates of intergenerational income mobility at country level, and applying the moderated regression model, the results show strikingly consistent patterns. A country with more …
