Estimation of formamide harmonic and anharmonic modes in the Kohn-Sham limit using the polarization consistent basis sets.
2010
Formamide harmonic and anharmonic frequencies of fundamental vibrations in the gas phase and in several solvents were successfully estimated in the B3LYP Kohn-Sham complete basis set limit (KS CBS). CBS results were obtained by extrapolating a power function (two-parameter formula) to the results calculated with polarization-consistent basis sets. Anharmonic corrections using the second order perturbation treatment (PT2) and hybrid B3LYP functional combined with polarization consistent pc-n (n = 0, 1, 2, 3, 4) and several Pople’s basis sets were analyzed for all fundamental formamide vibrational modes in the gas phase and solution. Solvent effects were modeled within a PCM method. The anhar…
Action of an extract from the seeds of Fraxinus excelsior L. on metabolic disorders in hypertensive and obese animal models.
2014
Nuzhenide and GI3, the principal secoiridoids of an extract obtained from the seeds of Fraxinus excelsior L. (FXE), are believed to be the active compounds responsible for the previously reported hypoglycemic effects of this extract. In this study, the effects of FXE were studied in two animal models which are representative of metabolic disorders: spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and obese Zucker rats. SHR were acutely treated (oral gavage) with different doses of FXE. In addition, SHR and Zucker rats were chronically fed (20 or 5 weeks, respectively) with standard chow supplemented with FXE. Acute treatment with FXE (200 mg per kg body weight) decreased systolic blood pressure as in …
Improvement of Hall Effect Current Transducer Metrological Performances in the Presence of Harmonic Distortion
2010
The performance of Hall effect current transducers (HECTs), under distorted waveform conditions, is usually characterized by means of a frequency response test. In this paper, it was investigated if frequency response is able to correctly evaluate the ratio and the phase errors under distorted conditions. Two HECTs, with the accuracy class level of 1% and 0.5%, respectively, were experimentally characterized under two conditions: 1) sinusoidal excitation with frequencies ranging from 50 to 750 Hz, which is the well-known frequency response test, and 2) nonsinusoidal excitation using fundamental frequency and one harmonic with adjusted amplitude and phase shift. It was found that ratio and p…
Large Eddy Simulations of Rough Turbulent Channel Flows Bounded by Irregular Roughness: Advances Toward a Universal Roughness Correlation
2020
The downward shift of the mean velocity profile in the logarithmic region, known as roughness function, $$\Delta U^+$$ , is the major macroscopic effect of roughness in wall bounded flows. This speed decrease, which is strictly linked to the friction Reynolds number and the geometrical properties which define the roughness pattern such as roughness height, density, shape parameters, has been deeply investigated in the past decades. Among the geometrical parameters, the effective slope (ES) seems to be suitable to estimate the roughness function at fixed friction Reynolds number, Re $$_{\tau }$$ . In the present work, the effects of several geometrical parameters on the roughness function, i…
‘You play like a Woman!’ Effects of gender stereotype threat on Women's performance in physical and sport activities: A meta-analysis
2018
Abstract Objectives The purpose of this quantitative review was to provide an estimation of the effect of stereotype threat on women's performance in sport. Design This review employed a meta-analytic technique. Method a meta-analysis with random effects model was performed on 24 effects. Publication bias was tested through funnel plots and Egger's regression test. Results Findings show a symmetric distribution of effects, making it possible to conclude that no file-drawer problem affected the collected sample of effects. Aggregating the results of the reviewed studies, a medium effect of stereotype threat manipulation on women's sport performances emerged (d = 0.33). Collected studies were…
'Not as safe as I believed': Differences in perceived and self-reported cycling behavior between riders and non-riders
2021
Cycling behavior remains a key issue for explaining several traffic causalities occurring every day. However, recent studies have shown how the assessment of the own safety-related behaviors on the road may substantially differ from how third parties assess them. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the differences between cyclists’ self-reported behavior and the proxy-reported behavior that other (non-cyclist) road users perceive from bike riders. For this purpose, this study used data from two samples: (i) 1064 cyclists (M = 32.83 years) answering the Cycling Behavior Questionnaire—CBQ, and (ii) 1070 non-cyclists (M = 30.83 years) answering an adapted version of the CBQ for externa…
Coupled theoretical and experimental studies for the radiation hardening of silica-based optical fibers
2014
International audience; We applied theoretical and experimental spectroscopy tools to ad hoc silica-based "canonical" samples to characterize the influence of several dopants and of some drawing process parameters on their radiation sensitivities. We present in this paper, the recent advances and results occurring from our coupled approach. On the experimental side, we studied the doping influence on the response of optical fibers and showed that changing the drawing parameters has a negligible influence on the fiber response in the case of specialty fibers. We focus mainly on the ${rm SiE}^prime$ defect that is observed through Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) measurements in all cano…
Role of medical history and medication use in the aetiology of upper aerodigestive tract cancers in Europe: the ARCAGE study
2012
ABSTRACT Background The study aimed to investigate the role of medical history (skin warts, Candida albicans, herpetic lesions, heartburn, regurgitation) and medication use (for heartburn; for regurgitation; aspirin) in the aetiology of upper aerodigestive tract (UADT) cancer. Methods A multicentre (10 European countries) case–control study [Alcohol-Related CAncers and GEnetic susceptibility (ARCAGE) project]. Results There were 1779 cases of UADT cancer and 1993 controls. History of warts or C. albicans infection was associated with a reduced risk [odds ratio (OR) 0.80, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.68–0.94 and OR 0.73, 95% CI 0.60–0.89, respectively] but there was no association with her…
Properties and generation by irradiation of germanium point defects in Ge-doped silica
2012
Ge doped amorphous silicon dioxide (Ge doped silica) has attracted the attention of researchers for more than 50 years. This material is used in many different technological fields from electronics, to telecommunication, to optics. In particular, it is widely used for the production of optical fibers and linear and nonlinear optical devices. The optical fibers, which allow to transmit optical signals with high speed avoiding interferences, are constituted by two regions with different refractive index values: core (inner part) and cladding (external part). To increase the refractive index of the core with respect to that of cladding, Ge doping of silica is commonly used. Moreover, in the Ge…
Semi-automatic quantitative RT-PCR to measure CYP induction by drugs in human hepatocytes
2003
An assay has been developed for the quantitative measurement of CYP mRNA content of the major human isoforms (1A1, 1A2, 2A6, 2B6, 2C9, 2C19, 2D6, 2E1, 3A4 and 3A5) in human hepatocytes. The method is based on the conversion of mRNAs into their corresponding cDNAs, followed by PCR amplification using appropriate primers. Making use of appropriate internal and external standards it is possible to estimate changes in CYP mRNA content of hepatocytes. The technique has been standardised to run semi-automatically. This procedure can be used to assess the CYP induction potential of new pharmaceuticals at a pre-clinical stage of development. To this aim, human hepatocytes obtained from functional l…
