The Crystal Barrel data acquisition system

The main detector components of the Crystal Barrel (CBAR) experiment at the Low Energy Antiproton Ring (LEAR) at CERN are two proportional wire chambers, a jet drift chamber and an electromagnetic calorimeter composed of 1380 CsI(Tl) crystals, with a total of 4380 analog channels. A description is given of the use of distributed VME-based microcomputers to collect data from the various subdetectors and to merge the full event information in a global event builder. At this level the data are transferred to a mu VAX for tape storage and monitoring. >

Construction, test and commissioning of the triple-gem tracking detector for compass

The Small Area Tracking system of the COMPASS experiment at CERN includes a set of 20 large area, fast position-sensitive Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) detectors, designed to reliably operate in the harsh radiation environment of the experiment. We describe in detail the design, choice of materials, assembly procedures and quality controls used to manufacture the devices. The test procedure in the laboratory, the performance in test beams and in the initial commissioning phase in the experiment are presented and discussed.

Beam study of irradiated ATLAS-SCT prototypes

Abstract Prototypes of ATLAS-SCT modules with ABCD readout chips were tested in a 4 GeV/c pion beam at KEK's proton synchrotron. Of both SCT module geometries—barrel and forward—three identical modules were placed in the beam. One module of each type had been irradiated to 3×1014 protons/cm2 in the CERN PS previous to the beam test. A method has been developed to reconstruct the time-resolved shaper pulse from the binary hit information, allowing a more detailed study of the timing properties of the ABCD. The present results will be compared to a simulation of the charge collection and Front End electronics response.

ATLAS level-1 calorimeter trigger: subsystem tests of a Jet/Energy-sum Processor module

The ATLAS Level-1 Calorimeter Trigger consists of a Preprocessor, a Cluster Processor (CP), and a Jet/Energy-sum Processor (JEP). The CP and JEP receive digitised trigger-tower data from the Preprocessor and produce trigger multiplicities and total and missing energy for the final trigger decision. The trigger will also provide region-of-interest (RoI) information for the Level-2 trigger and intermediate results of the data acquisition (DAQ) system for monitoring and diagnostics by using readout driver modules (ROD). The fast readout system for the MAPMTs of COMPASS RICH-1

A fast readout system for the upgrade of the COMPASS RICH detector has been developed and successfully used for data taking in 2006 and 2007. The new readout system for the multi-anode PMTs in the central part of the photon detector of the RICH is based on the high-sensitivity MAD4 preamplifier-discriminator and the dead-time free F1-TDC chip characterized by high-resolution. The readout electronics has been designed taking into account the high photon flux in the central part of the detector and the requirement to run at high trigger rates of up to 100 kHz with negligible dead-time. Front-End Electronics for the KAOS Spectrometer at MAMI

A new front-end electronics system has been developed for the electron arm tracking detectors in the Kaos spectrometer at the Mainz microtron MAMI. The signals of multi-anode photomultipliers are collected by 96-channel front-end boards, digitized by double-threshold discriminators and the signal time is picked up by F1 TDC chips. The system was designed to process more than 4,000 channels and to cope with the high electron flux in the spectrometer and the high count rate requirement of the detectors. A subset of 288 channels was installed and successfully used in the 2008 data taking period of the Kaos spectrometer.

A low-noise and fast pre-amplifier and readout system for SiPMs

Abstract To operate silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) in a demanding environment with large temperature gradients, different amplifier concepts were characterized by analyzing SiPM pulse-shapes and charge distributions. A fully differential 4-wire SiPM pre-amplifier with separated tracks for the bias voltage and with good common-mode noise suppression was developed and successfully tested. To achieve highest single-pixel resolutions an online after-pulse and pile-up suppression was realized with fast readout electronics based on digital filters.

MuPix8 — Large area monolithic HVCMOS pixel detector for the Mu3e experiment

Abstract The requirements of the ultra thin pixel detectors for the Mu3e experiment at PSI can be achieved by the HVCMOS technology, which allows the design of fast monolithic detectors. The latest nearly full size prototype, MuPix8, has a size of about 1 × 2 cm 2 . The pixel readout circuitry was fully redesigned in comparison to the previous MuPix versions. MuPix8’s readout electronics implement a new concept with two comparators and two different operation modes. One mode uses two threshold voltages for time walk correction, the other is a ramp-ADC. First tests show a detection efficiency of 99.6% for 4 GeV electrons.

Point-to-point readout for the ALICE EMCal detector

Abstract It is anticipated that the LHC will deliver Pb+Pb collisions at a minimum bias interaction rate of about 50 kHz after the second long shutdown of the LHC in 2018. This will be roughly two orders of magnitude greater than the current data recording rate capability of the ALICE experiment. Therefore a major upgrade of the ALICE detector is planned for the next shutdown to enable ALICE to record data at the full Pb+Pb minimum bias interaction rate delivered by the LHC. The 48Ca+181Ta reaction: Cross section studies and investigation of neutron-deficient 86 ≤ Z ≤ 93 isotopes

© 2019 Fusion-evaporation reactions with the doubly magic projectile 48 Ca were used to access neutron-deficient nuclei around neptunium at the velocity filter SHIP, and investigated using the COMPASS decay spectroscopy station. With the use of digital electronics, several isotopes produced via neutron, proton, and α evaporation channels were identified by establishing correlated α-decay chains with short-lived sub-μs members. Data are given on decay chains stemming from 225,226 Np, 225 U, and 222,223 Pa. New information on the isotopes 225,226 Np and 222 Pa was obtained.
