Limitation of the ECRIS performance by kinetic plasma instabilities (invited).
2016
Electron cyclotron resonance ion source (ECRIS) plasmas are prone to kinetic instabilities due to anisotropic electron velocity distribution. The instabilities are associated with strong microwave emission and periodic bursts of energetic electrons escaping the magnetic confinement. The instabilities explain the periodic ms-scale oscillation of the extracted beam current observed with several high performance ECRISs and restrict the parameter space available for the optimization of extracted beam currents of highly charged ions. Experiments with the JYFL 14 GHz ECRIS have demonstrated that due to the instabilities the optimum Bmin-field is less than 0.8BECR, which is the value suggested by …
Time-dependent density-functional theory for strongly interacting electrons
2017
We consider an analytically solvable model of two interacting electrons that allows for the calculation of the exact exchange-correlation kernel of time-dependent density functional theory. This kernel, as well as the corresponding density response function, is studied in the limit of large repulsive interactions between the electrons and we give analytical results for these quantities as an asymptotic expansion in powers of the square root of the interaction strength. We find that in the strong interaction limit the three leading terms in the expansion of the kernel act instantaneously while memory terms only appear in the next orders. We further derive an alternative expansion for the ker…
Constraints of reduced density-matrix functional theory for the two-dimensional homogeneous electron gas
2011
Reduced density-matrix functional theory (RDMFT) has become an appealing alternative to density-functional theory to describe electronic properties of strongly correlated systems. Here we derive exact conditions for the suitability of RDMFT to describe the two-dimensional homogeneous electron gas, which is the base system for semiconductor quantum dots and quantum Hall devices, for example. Following the method of Cioslowski and Pernal [J. Chem. Phys. 111, 3396 (1999)] we focus on the properties of power functionals of the form $f(n,{n}^{\ensuremath{'}})={(n{n}^{\ensuremath{'}})}^{\ensuremath{\alpha}}$ for the scaling function in the exchange-correlation energy. We show that in order to hav…
Exchange Splitting of a Hybrid Surface State and Ferromagnetic Order in a 2D Surface Alloy
2019
Surface alloys are highly flexible materials for tailoring the spin-dependent properties of surfaces. Here, we study the spin-dependent band structure of a DyAg$_2$ surface alloy formed on an Ag(111) crystal. We find a significant exchange spin-splitting of the localized Dy 4f states pointing to a ferromagnetic coupling between the localized Dy moments at $40\,$K. The magnetic coupling between these moments is mediated by an indirect, RKKY-like exchange coupling via the spin-polarized electrons of the hole-like Dy-Ag hybrid surface state.

New quantum Monte Carlo formulation for modeling trans-polyacetylene properties: specific heat calculation
2004
Abstract In this paper we propose a new hybridization scheme for numerical simulation based on the determinantal quantum Monte Carlo and analytical model to treat the vibration mode of one-dimensional trans -polyacetylene chain. We use both of the extended Hubbard model (EHM) and Peierls–Hubbard model to compute the specific heat for different assumptions. For both the two models, our results indicate that the behavior of the specific heat is characterized by a maximum. We also introduce the effect of dimerization through Peierls–Hubbard model. In this case it is found that the specific heat magnitude is slightly more important when compared to specific heat value found with the EHM case. M…
Quantum Monte-Carlo calculation of correlation functions of undistorted, cis-distorted and trans-distorted polyacene
2003
Abstract We have studied polyacene within the Hubbard model to explore the effect of electrons correlations on the bond–bond correlation as well as spin–spin correlation functions. We employ the determinantal quantum Monte-Carlo to resolve the microscopic Hamiltonian of this system which involves a nearest-neighbor electron hopping matrix element t , an on-site Coulomb repulsion U . The objective of this study is to understand the effect of electron–electron (e–e) correlations on the structural instability in polyacene. We find strong similarities between polyacene and polyacetylene. The system shows no tendency to destroy the imposed bond-alternation pattern. The spin–spin correlations sho…
Phase behaviour of Ag2CrO4 under compression: Structural, vibrational, and optical properties
2013
We have performed an experimental study of the crystal structure, lattice dynamics, and optical properties of silver chromate (Ag2CrO4) at ambient temperature and high pressures. In particular, the crystal structure, Raman-active phonons, and electronic band gap have been accurately determined. When the initial orthorhombic Pnma Ag2CrO4 structure (phase I) is compressed up to 4.5 GPa, a previously undetected phase (phase II) has been observed with a 0.95% volume collapse. The structure of phase II can be indexed to a similar orthorhombic cell as phase I, and the transition can be considered to be an isostructural transition. This collapse is mainly due to the drastic contraction of the a ax…
