Background: In chronic gastrointestinal bleeding, success rates in the range of 48% to 76% have been reported for diagnosing clear bleeding sources using capsule endoscopy. The influence of patient selection on the numbers of positive findings yielded by capsule endoscopy is as yet unclear. Methods: From April 2001 to June 2003, capsule endoscopy was carried out in 74 of a total of 127 patients (58%) who presented for capsule endoscopy with a high suspicion of gastrointestinal bleeding in the small-bowel region. Segmentation and virtual exploration of tracheobronchial trees

Abstract The tracheobronchial tree as part of the lung is part of one of the most important organs of the human body. Inhaled air is distributed to the alveolus where oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange between air and blood takes place. In this paper, we introduce the virtual endoscopy system VIVENDI to perform virtual inspections of tracheobronchial trees based on their segmentation and of the complementing blood vessels. It is based on a hybrid segmentation pipeline which enables the segmentation of vascular and tracheobronchial structures down to the seventh generation of the bronchi.

The Clinical Picture of Uncomplicated Versus Complicated Diverticulitis of the Colon

Purpose There is no consensus about the correct definition of uncomplicated diverticulitis (UD) in clinical practice. We evaluated therefore whether clinical picture of UD differs from complicated diverticulitis (CD). Fifty consecutive eligible patients (21 males, 29 females, mean age 63.6 years, range 47–75 years) were studied. Symptoms, the inflammatory indices, and Computerized Tomography (CT) scan of the abdomen were assessed at the time of admission.
