Entrepreneurial choices depend on trust : Some global evidence

Interpersonal trust and people’s trust in institutions are important components of social capital, which has been shown to have not only innate social value but also diverse direct and indirect positive social and economic impacts. Using data for an economically and globally diverse group of countries, we examine empirically how changes in interpersonal trust and trust in institutions affect entrepreneurship over time. Our findings suggest that (1) enhancing either type of trust leads to more entrepreneurial activity and (2) an increase in interpersonal trust causes a structural change in the composition of the TEA-type entrepreneurship. This chapter addresses the social venture as a form of organization that has a role in the current society. In an economy based on markets, the intervention of multiple actors by itself—like governments, social movements, charity, and social ventures—cannot ensure the mechanisms necessary to the proper working of the system. The paper aims to increase our understanding of the relationships between firm strategies, the design of institutional contexts on behalf of public agents, and the stimulation of diffused entrepreneurship within the economic system. In particular, it analyzes the way in which firm patent portfolio management strategies may systematically hinder the emergence of entrepreneurial endeavours within the economic system and, on this basis, critically discusses how the acknowledgement of these interactions should influence the design of public policies at the economic system level.

Legitimacy of organizations or ways of acting remains a basic factor to compete. A company whose actions differ from other companies may have legitimacy issues. To overcome them, it will be necessary to demonstrate that the new actions are also legitimate. To do so, a process of legitimation is necessary. This process alone will confer the necessary taken-for-grantedness to survive. Social entrepreneurship, as a type of institutional entrepreneurship, can experiment with these difficulties. Studying these difficulties becomes necessary to understand the conflicts of interest that move society for or against social ventures.
