El conocimiento pedagógico y la periferia del universo educativo

2006

In this work the authors reflect on the dynamics generated between the universe of education and educational theory, as the fruit of the incorporation to that universe of areas and forms which up until then had been external, borderline or marginal to it. After an introduction, the article applies this general perspective to diverse spheres: in the fi rst place, to what the consideration of non-formal and formal education has meant for educational theory; in second place, the same is done with respect to the idea of permanent education; third, it is applied to the repercussions that the real recognition of gender equality in education has on pedagogical discourse; fourth, to what the possib…

Argumentation in Secondary School Students' Structured and Unstructured Chat Discussions

2012

Joint construction of new knowledge demands that persons can express their statements in a convincing way and explore other people's arguments constructively. For this reason, more knowledge on different means to support collaborative argumentation is needed. This study clarifies whether structured interaction supports students' critical and elaborative argumentation. The study compares the quality of secondary school students' argumentation during structured and unstructured chat interaction. The data consist of 16 dyadic chat discussions: 8 discussions concerned vivisection and 8 gender equality. Half of the discussions were carried out through structured chat, and the other half through…

A Hidden Curriculum? Coeducation and Gender Identity

2000

Different subjects, in particular, are shown to be gendered, and it is a feet that children invest and excel in subject matters in accordance with their sex. Findings cm the reinforcement of gender stereotypes are more convergent with studies showing much more clear-cut differences in attitude between boys and girls in mixed groups. Coeducation holds back intellectual and personal development because it gives particular cogency to the cognitive processes of gender categorisation not only of fields and professions, but also of one's self and of others. Most importantly, probably, is the socialisation process that takes place simply through the cohabitation of the two groups, with their suppo…

Educación diferenciada por razón de sexo en España: Reflexiones sobre los derechos y libertades educativas desde la perspectiva constitucional y de l…

2021

Gender-separate education, understood as a pedagogical model that provides separate schooling for boys and girls, has been subject to legal and public scrutiny for the past thirty years. Nonetheless, it has not been until 2018 that this educational option was put into the spotlight, especially regarding its constitutionality and compatibility with arts. 1.1, 9.2 and 14 of the Spanish Constitution, which constitute a manifestation of the principles of equality and non-discrimination, while at the same time trying to balance it with art. 27 of said constitutional text, with respect to the right to education and freedom to choose and create educational centers. Against this backdrop, the prese…

Do negative life events promote gerotranscendence in the second half of life?

2014

Objectives: Gerotranscendence has been defined as a developmental shift in meta-perspective from a materialistic and pragmatic view to a more cosmic and transcendent view. Although gerotranscendence has been argued to increase with age and life experiences, the results have been mixed and based on cross-sectional studies. We use a longitudinal setting to investigate the role of negative life events, age, and gender on change in one dimension of gerotranscendence, cosmic transcendence. Method: 1569 individuals (ages 58-89) answered a questionnaire on cosmic transcendence in two cycles of the Longitudinal Aging Study Amsterdam in 1995-1996 (time 1) and 1998-1999 (time 2). Controlling for educ…

Questioning Human Rights: The Case of Education for Children and Youth with Disabilities in Ethiopia

2016

This chapter focuses on the politics of education as a basic human right. We analyze the challenges and opportunities implied in realizing the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and operationalizing the human rightsbased approach to disability (HRBAD) with a case study on the inclusion of children and youth with disabilities in the regular education system of Ethiopia. The existing situation is highlighted with lived experiences of persons with disabilities and comments by organisations of persons with disabilities, education professionals, and government officials who were interviewed between August and October 2013 in Ethiopia. When successful, the HRBAD and its critica…

A Latin American Casanova? Sex, Gender, Enlightenment and Revolution in the Life and Writings of Francisco de Miranda (1750–1816)

2022

This paper looks from a gender perspective at the elusive figure, complex personality and myth of Francisco de Miranda, enlightened traveller and Precursor of Latin American independence. By analysing Miranda's personal archive as his own carefully crafted creation, it pursues three closely connected issues insufficiently interpreted in historical perspective: the forms of masculinity he embodied and those from which he distanced himself, his connections with women and the role that gender played in his assessments of the countries he visited and wrote about. Miranda's trajectory and self-image trace an evolution (from mondain seducer and enlightened reader and thinker, to revolutionary sym…

Citizenship and Gender Equality in the Second Spanish Republic: Representations and Practices in Socialist Culture (1931–1936)

2014

AbstractThis article contributes to historiographical debates on political cultures, the construction of female citizenship and democracy development through an analysis of the construction of gender identities in socialist culture and working-class culture in Spain. From 1931, in the context of the Second Spanish Republic, socialist culture experienced a complex mixture of egalitarian proposals, collective actions and strategies to achieve the political mobilisation of women. This process reformulated in female terms many of the concepts historically present in this political culture: equality, freedom, secularism and citizenship.
