Research Letter: is neuroticism a risk factor for postpartum depression?

2012

Although the relationship between personality and depressive illness is complex (Shea, 2005), there is empirical evidence that some personality features such as neuroticism, harm avoidance, introversion, dependency, self-criticism or perfectionism are related to depressive illness risk (Gunderson et al. 1999). Moreover, personality traits, especially neuroticism, may explain the increased prevalence of depression among females (Goodwin & Gotlib, 2004). Few studies have explored neuroticism, extraversion and psychoticism as risk factors for depression after an event as stressful as childbirth. Pitt (1968) was the first author to report high scores on neuroticism and low scores on extraversio…

Compliance of IEEE 802.22 WRAN for field area network in smart grid

2016

Distributed power system network is going to be complex, and it will require high-speed, reliable and secure communication systems for managing intermittent generation with coordination of centralised power generation, including load control. Cognitive Radio (CR) is highly favourable for providing communications in Smart Grid by using spectrum resources opportunistically. The IEEE 802.22 Wireless Regional Area Network (WRAN) having the capabilities of CR use vacant channels opportunistically in the frequency range of 54 MHz to 862 MHz occupied by TV band. A comprehensive review of using IEEE 802.22 for Field Area Network in power system network using spectrum sensing (CR based communication…

Energy-Efficient Protocol Design

2015

Recent studies have shown that the total energy consumed by the Internet has followed an increasing trend over the years. A considerable part of this energy is wasted due to an inefficient utilization of edge devices , that is, Personal Computers (PCs) and other user equipment in homes and offices. PCs are often left on even when they are not used (e.g., overnight or during weekends), while other edge devices, such as printers, IP phones, and displays, are typically kept always on , especially in public buildings. A number of solutions have been proposed for eliminating, or reducing, energy wastes caused by edge devices. In this chapter, we propose a general taxonomy for their classificatio…

Technical characteristics can make the difference in a surgical linear stapler. Or not?

2015

Background Anastomotic leak (AL) after gastrointestinal surgery is a severe complication associated with relevant short- and long-term sequelae. Most of the anastomosis are currently performed with a surgical stapler that is required to have appropriate characteristics to guarantee good performances. The aim of our study was to evaluate, in the laboratory, pressure resistance and tensile strength of anastomosis performed with different surgical linear staplers, available in the market. Materials and methods We have been studying three linear staplers, with diverse cartridges and staple heights, of three different companies, used for gastrointestinal anastomosis and gastric or intestinal clo…

Neuroprotective Effects of Low Intensity and Low Frequency Electromagnetic in vitro Stimulation on Glial Cells

2020

Degenerative neurological diseases (senile dementia, Alzheimer`s disease, glaucoma), post-stroke sequelae are increasing as prevalence nowadays, in context of aging in general population, and there are strong evidences that astrocytes may play a significant role in neuroprotection. The study evaluates the effects of low intensity low frequency electromagnetic field (EMF) in vitro stimulation (195 mA, 7-8 Hz) on the glial cells, in different conditions, in order to identify the neuroprotective potential. Three cell lines were used for the study: the Clonetics (Lonza) line of normal human astrocytes, U87 glioblastoma tumor cells (ATCC) and L929 murine fibroblasts. The cell cultures were ex…

Intraoperative cryoablation of atrial fibrillation with the old-fashioned cryode tips: a simple, effective, and inexpensive method.

2006

Nowadays atrial fibrillation is usually treated simultaneously with cardiac procedures, and new cryo-systems have been developed for performing easier and faster intraoperative ablation. However, the old cryode designs can still be useful in surgical practice and represent a more cost-effective method. In this article we present a technique using old-fashioned cryodes for intraoperative treatment of atrial fibrillation and comment on its advantages and limitations.

Continuous Analysis of Running Mechanics by Means of an Integrated INS/GPS Device

2019

This paper describes a single body-mounted sensor that integrates accelerometers, gyroscopes, compasses, barometers, a GPS receiver, and a methodology to process the data for biomechanical studies. The sensor and its data processing system can accurately compute the speed, acceleration, angular velocity, and angular orientation at an output rate of 400 Hz and has the ability to collect large volumes of ecologically-valid data. The system also segments steps and computes metrics for each step. We analyzed the sensitivity of these metrics to changing the start time of the gait cycle. Along with traditional metrics, such as cadence, speed, step length, and vertical oscillation, this system est…

A Deep Learning Approach for Energy Efficient Computational Offloading in Mobile Edge Computing

2019

Mobile edge computing (MEC) has shown tremendous potential as a means for computationally intensive mobile applications by partially or entirely offloading computations to a nearby server to minimize the energy consumption of user equipment (UE). However, the task of selecting an optimal set of components to offload considering the amount of data transfer as well as the latency in communication is a complex problem. In this paper, we propose a novel energy-efficient deep learning based offloading scheme (EEDOS) to train a deep learning based smart decision-making algorithm that selects an optimal set of application components based on remaining energy of UEs, energy consumption by applicati…

QA of dynamic MLC based on EPID portal dosimetry.

2010

Abstract Purpose Dynamic delivery of intensity modulated beams (dIMRT) requires not only accurate verification of leaf positioning but also a control on the speed of motion. The latter is a parameter that has a major impact on the dose delivered to the patient. Time consumed in quality assurance (QA) procedures is an issue of relevance in any radiotherapy department. Electronic portal imaging dosimetry (EPID) can be very efficient for routine tests. The purpose of this work is to investigate the ability of our EPID for detecting small errors in leaf positioning, and to present our daily QA procedures for dIMRT based on EPID.
