Sarcosinaemia in a retarded, amaurotic child.

A 9-month-old Turkish girl demonstrated an abnormal qualitative amino acid excretion pattern suggestive of sarcosinaemia. She was blind and had evidence of developmental and motor retardation. No other physical abnormalities were noted. Quantitative amino acid analysis revealed elevated serum and urine sarcosine levels. An oral sarcosine loading test showed an exaggerated response with a delayed conversion to glycine. Sarcosine was undetected in other family members.

Optical quality of the diabetic eye: a review

Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder characterized by the presence of chronic hyperglycaemia. Several structural, morphological, and physiological changes in each of ocular component have been described in detail during the past decades. Due to these abnormalities, the diabetic patient undergoes a degradation of the retinal image by an increase of higher ocular aberrations and ocular scattering coming from mainly tear film, cornea, and crystalline lens. This review aims to provide an overview of current knowledge about the effects of diabetes mellitus in these optical phenomena and its consequence on the visual quality of the diabetic patient.

This paper reviews recent studies of the role of the tear film in the optical quality of the eye. Recent investigations focus on the dynamics of the tear film after a blink and its important role in the optical quality of the eye. The results in this review were used in an attempt to understand the optical and visual impact of tear-film breakup in normal eyes and dry eyes. It was noted that patients with dry-eye syndrome have large optical aberrations compared with those in normal eyes, which may be the cause of blurry vision associated with the syndrome. Medical errors are one of the leading causes of death and injury in radiation therapy administration as reported in the literature. This point out an overall deficiency in management allowing patient treatment in the absence of suitable quality assurance processes. International audience; Maths for Business is a first-year mathematics module for approximately 500 non-mathematics specialists. It has continuous assessment consisting of ten weekly quizzes, worth 40% of the final mark. In 2016/17, students who did not receive the maximum five marks on their weekly quiz were offered the opportunity to resubmit their quiz, with correction(s) and an explanation of their error(s), for one additional mark. The induced smoothed LASSO

We propose a new lasso-type estimator of regression coefficients for regression models. Our proposal relies on the recent idea of induced smoothing and leads to estimators with sampling distribution somewhat close to the Normal one, regardless of their true value, along with the corresponding reliable covariance matrix. As a consequence inference (e.g. p-values) may be carried out relatively easily. We present results from some simulation experiments.
