Children’s understanding of ethnic belonging and the development of ethnic attitudes
2005
The chapter is a state-of-the-art review of the research focused on children’s understanding of ethnic belonging and the development of ethnic attitudes, in which classic theories as well as recent changes and trends in this field of research are summarised. This review is explained in terms of a progression from the Piagetian stages model of development to the current emphasis on affective processes, socio-cultural context and children's own naiive theories about ethnic belonging and ethnic groups. In this perspective, the chapter deals with some key topics of developmental social psychology, such as the theoretical explanations of children’s ethnic identity and ethnic attitudes, the opera…
The Role of Folk Pedagogy in Child Raising and in Maintaining National Identity in the Latvian Villages of Siberia
2015
<p>A large number of Latvia’s inhabitants have left the country recently due to a variety of reasons. There have been several waves of emigration in Latvia’s history. Generations of Latvians live in different parts of the world. Many have become assimilated in their country of destination, but there are communities of Latvians that have maintained their national and cultural identity, as well as traditions for well over a century. The goal of this study is to identify the set of skills, situations and character education – known as folk pedagogy - that are central to the retention of the Latvian idenity in the Latvian villages of Augšbebi (Bobrovka) and Kurzemes Ozolaine (Kurļanddubov…
Immunoaffinity purification and characterization of mitochondrial membrane-bound D-3-hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase from Jaculus orientalis.
2008
Abstract Background The interconversion of two important energy metabolites, 3-hydroxybutyrate and acetoacetate (the major ketone bodies), is catalyzed by D-3-hydroxybutyrate dehydrogenase (BDH1: EC 1.1.1.30), a NAD+-dependent enzyme. The eukaryotic enzyme is bound to the mitochondrial inner membrane and harbors a unique lecithin-dependent activity. Here, we report an advanced purification method of the mammalian BDH applied to the liver enzyme from jerboa (Jaculus orientalis), a hibernating rodent adapted to extreme diet and environmental conditions. Results Purifying BDH from jerboa liver overcomes its low specific activity in mitochondria for further biochemical characterization of the e…
Uczestnictwo mniejszości narodowych i etnicznych w polskim życiu politycznym po 1989 roku
2019
The participation of national and ethnic minorities in Polish political life after 1989 is one of the achieve-ments of democratic Poland. Tracing the history of minority participation in local and parliamentary elec-tions after 1990 makes it clear that this history is dominated by the German minority. However, this does not mean that other minorities did not participate in political competition at the local, regional or national level, but rather that their participation was clearly more modest compared to the German minority. Partici-pation in the political life of other minorities has mainly a local dimension, although these communities do not choose to participate in their own ethnic ele…
Ochrona praw mniejszości narodowych i etnicznych na tle zmian politycznych w Polsce - przyczynek do dyskusji
2021
Polskie prawo posiada bogaty zestaw narzędzi ochrony praw i wsparcia mniejszości narodowych i etnicznych, na czele z art. 35 Konstytucji RP i ustawą z 6 stycznia 2005 r. o mniejszościach narodowych i etnicznych i o języku regionalnym. Społeczność ta ma potencjał, by w p…
Partycypacja mniejszości niemieckiej w polskim życiu publicznym po 1989 r. – przypadek Śląska Opolskiego
2017
Integration and hegemonic relationship of labour market inequality : an investigation of immigrants/policy officials perceptions on immigrant's labou…
2017
The aim of the research was to investigate the perceptions of immigrants (students, refugees and others) and public officials, on the value of Finnish economic integration within the broader context of immigrant-host labour relationship. Employing Gramsci theory of Hegemony, this study examined those discursive hegemonies in defining the economic and labour market importance of migration and integration, and how does such "hegemonic definitions" resonate within the views of Non-EU foreign students and other migrants. How does hegemonic labour inequality explicate when certain notions of belonging and identity resonates within labour market inclusions of Immigrants. To understand how percept…

The (im)possible success of disadvantaged students. Reflections on education, migration and social change
2019
The paper focuses on the ?unexpected pathways? of successful students with an immigrant background: these biographical routes, that seems socially impossible, raise theoretical issues around the individual-society, actor-structure relationship. Disadvantaged students who succeed represent a sociological challenge in the attempt to understand atypical situations and to identify the institutional processes and the structural opportunities that facilitate them, reducing ethnic inequalities in education. This framework is the starting point of the Su.Per. project (Success in educational pathways of students with immigrant background), based on the collection of written autobiographies of 65 imm…
