Leaves from Olea europaea represent one of the main by-products of the olive oil industry, containing a plethora of bioactive compounds with several promising activities for human health. An organic solvent-free extraction method was developed for the recovery of olive leaf phenols, which obtained an extract containing oleuropein in high amounts. A comparison of various extraction media is reported, together with the total phenolic content, DPPH (2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) content, ORAC (oxygen radical absorbance capacity), and polyphenol oxidase activity of the corresponding extracts. The release from dormancy of Euonymus europaeus L. embryos by a brief treatment with GA 3 has been studied. During 48 h incubation of dormant embryos in GA-free medium, phospholipid levels increased at first, then declined sharply over the last 6 h. When the embryos were placed in GA, medium during this 6 h period levels of total phospholipids as well as of phosphatidylethanolamine increased whilst phosphatidylinositol and phosphatidylcholine declined slightly

Interaction of a host plant and its holoparasite: effects of previous selection by the parasite

If parasites decrease the fitness of their hosts one could expect selection for host traits (e.g. resistance and tolerance) that decrease the negative effects of parasitic infection. To study selection caused by parasitism, we used a novel study system: we grew host plants (Urtica dioica) that originated from previously parasitized and unparasitized natural populations (four of each) with or without a holoparasitic plant (Cuscuta europaea). The success of olive (Olea europaea) orchards depends on the interaction between genotype, planting system and orchard management. Research efforts often collide with the lack of high-throughput monitoring technologies for effective and rapid evaluation of expressed phenotypes under field conditions. En este ensayo sostengo que las dificultades de la economía europea para generar suficiente empleo y sostener el bienestar, durante la última década, están dando lugar a políticas orientadas hacia la construcción de un "modelo social de bajo coste", apoyado en la idea de "flexeguridad" y en el desarrollo de los yacimientos de empleo. La política de empleo y la política social aparecen imbricadas a través de la precariedad.
