Kielitaidon arviointiin vaikuttavat käsitykset kielitaidosta ja aikojen saatossa kielitaidon arviointi on muuttunut lähes mekaanisesta kielitaidon osa-alueiden mittaamisesta monipuolisempaan kielenkäytön arviointiin (ks. esim. Rea-Dickins 2012: 12). Perinteisen kielitaidon testauksen juuret ovat kuitenkin yhä syvällä arviointikulttuurissamme ja vasta viime vuosikymmeninä on alettu painottaa testeille vaihtoehtoisten arviointimetodien tärkeyttä.
