Rising Educational Attainment and Opportunity Equalization: Evidence from France

2020

Educational policies are widely recognized as the means par excellence to equalize opportunities among children with different social and family backgrounds and to promote intergenerational mobility. In this chapter, we focus on the French case and we apply the opportunity equalization criterion proposed by Andreoli, Havnes, and Lefranc (2019) for evaluating the effect of rising compulsory schooling requirements in secondary education. Our results show that such education expansion has a limited redistributive effect on students’ earnings distribution. Nonetheless, we provide evidence of opportunity equalization among groups of students defined by family background circumstances.

Efficiency, Fairness and Sustainability in Social Housing Policy and Projects

2023

The provision of affordable housing for low-income households is a very complex issue long debated in many countries around the world. Social Housing (SH) is one of the tools for achieving fairness, social sustainability and economic feasibility, and is interrelated with politics, ethics and economics, as well as the environment, architecture and technology. In other words, national and local policy, and also public and private financial resources are all needed to provide SH. SH also involves social and urban transformations and is, consequently, linked to urban planning and redevelopment projects, real estate market dynamics and cooperation between public and private stakeholders. Sensitivity analysis and process optimization of a natural gas dehydration unit using triethylene glycol

2019

Abstract Dehydration of natural gas by absorption using triethylene glycol (TEG) is a common industrial offshore procedure to ensure the compliance with the required water dew point specifications for midstream transportation. Two thermodynamic models, the UMR-PRU and the TST/NRTL, are applied for the process simulation while a preliminary economic evaluation has been conducted revealing that both yield overall similar results as for the fixed capital cost which is found to be in good agreement with reported literature values. Moreover, sensitivity analysis of several operational parameters of the process has been performed and optimized values are suggested aiming to reduce its energy requ…

The successful education sector development in Tanzania – comment on gender balance and inclusive education

2010

In this paper we discuss to what extent the international and national equality goals regarding gender balance and inclusive education have been reached in the education sector development in Tanzania. According to recent reports, the development trend has been generally positive, and the country is close to achieving its primary education targets. More detailed reviews suggest, however, that current monitoring and evaluation mechanisms are too narrow to catch the critical factors regarding equality, particularly in secondary education. Our comment concerns the achievements and challenges, and emphasises the significance of a multidimensional set of information including in‐depth qualitativ…

Carbon sequestration in French agricultural soils: A spatial economic evaluation

2021

International audience; Soil organic carbon sequestration measures entail costs to farmers with different individual characteristics and located in different areas. A cost‐effective analysis taking into account these heterogeneities is crucial for developing effective public policy aimed at increasing carbon sequestration. We undertake such an analysis focusing on three soil organic carbon sequestration measures: no‐till, extension of temporary grasslands, and hedgerows. Through an optimization model applied to France, our results show that only extension of temporary grasslands can store carbon at low cost, though their potential for carbon sequestration is also low. For an ambitious carbo…

General Diagnosis and Medical Evaluation

2019

Current literature does not contribute to a high level of evidence regarding possible indications for immediate loading. A great variety of exclusion criteria for immediate loading of dental implants are used in different studies. However, the reported criteria are similar to those chosen for conventional loading of dental implants. Despite its several clinical advantages, the immediate loading protocol should be performed respecting a rigorous preliminary diagnostic algorithm. Primary indication for immediate implant loading is certainly patients’ desire to reduce the overall treatment time. Additionally, several psychological factors, related to the preservation of functional and esthetic…

Relationship between students' perception of a rubric for oral presentations and their academic characteristics

2022

The use of rubrics in the evaluation of oral presentations has been associated with several benefits for students. However, it is unknown whether students with better academic marks and greater self-regulation find the use of rubrics more useful or not. This paper aims to assess the relationship between how students perceive the use of a rubric and their academic characteristics, and to analyze the congruence between the professor’s and students’ evaluations when using the rubric. Eighty-five students studying for a Degree in Sport Sciences participated in this study. A rubric for oral presentations was used to assess the students’ performance. The students then filled out…

What a Difference a Case Makes: Teaching Economic Evaluation of Public Policies to Non-Economists

2014

The adaptation process to the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) provides an opportunity for incorporating new methodologies and making students play the main role in the learning process. In this context, a group of teachers from the University of Barcelona began in the 2012-13 academic year a new pedagogical experience, which consisted in the introduction of case-study methodology in the subject Economic Evaluation of Public Policies, taught at the Political and Administration Sciences undergraduate programme. The aims of the experience were the following: Firstly, making more attractive the subject to non-economists; secondly, developing skills such as collaborative work and critical …

Evaluación del diseño del programa AedEM de Educación Emocional para Educación Secundaria

2016

The systematic interventions in the field of emotional education are a resource increasingly used to facilitate among adolescents acquisition of emotional skills. The review in this work of such interventions shows that most of them take the form of expert programs without integrating their activities within the school curriculum. This paper focuses on the evaluation design of the Programme of Emotional Education (hereinafter AEdEm), which is a compulsory subject in the 1st and 2nd academic years of E.S.O (Compulsory Secondary Education) at a secondary school in the province of Cádiz. This program developed by Sánchez Román y Sánchez Calleja (2015) aims to develop emotional competences foll…

Prioritization of students’ needs for education service design and development by embedding AHP and fuzzy set theory: A case study

2015

Student satisfaction represents a strategic factor for many universities towards increasing competition concerning students recruitment. Thus, nowadays many universities take into account typical customer-oriented industry’s approaches for the education service design and development. In such a condition, prioritization of students’ needs represents a crucial step to appropriately adopt these approaches. This paper proposes an effective way to evaluate importance of students’ needs based on the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) method, in which linguistic variables are parameterized by means of triangular fuzzy numbers, to deal with uncertainty, subjectivity and vagueness. Finally, a case st…
