PMT: New analytical framework for automated evaluation of geo-environmental modelling approaches
2019
Geospatial computation, data transformation to a relevant statistical software, and step-wise quantitative performance assessment can be cumbersome, especially when considering that the entire modelling procedure is repeatedly interrupted by several input/output steps, and the self-consistency and self-adaptive response to the modelled data and the features therein are lost while handling the data from different kinds of working environments. To date, an automated and a comprehensive validation system, which includes both the cutoff-dependent and –independent evaluation criteria for spatial modelling approaches, has not yet been developed for GIS based methodologies. This study, for the fir…
Persistence of symptoms in primary somatoform vertigo and dizziness: a disorder "lost" in health care?
2013
The aim of this study was to perform a 3-year follow-up of primary somatoform vertigo and dizziness (SVD) regarding health care use and treatment. Ninety-two patients with dizziness underwent detailed vestibular neurophysiological testing and a Structured Clinical Interview for Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition. Psychometric assessments comprised the Vertigo Symptom Scale, the Vertigo Handicap Questionnaire, the SCL-90-R, and the Short-Form-36 Health Survey. At the 3-year follow-up, 65 patients with primary SVD (anxiety, n = 29; depression, n = 14; somatoform disorders, n = 22) were reassessed (70.7% response). The patients improved in symptom severity (p…
Hepatocyte cell lines: their use, scope and limitations in drug metabolism studies.
2006
Gaining knowledge on the metabolism of a drug, the enzymes involved and its inhibition or induction potential is a necessary step in pharmaceutical development of new compounds. Primary human hepatocytes are considered a cellular model of reference, as they express the majority of drug-metabolising enzymes, respond to enzyme inducers and are capable of generating in vitro a metabolic profile similar to what is found in vivo. However, hepatocytes show phenotypic instability and have a restricted accessibility. Different alternatives have been explored in the past recent years to overcome the limitations of primary hepatocytes. These include immortalisation of adult or fetal human hepatic cel…
Advances in Marine Natural Products of the Indole and Annelated Indole Series: Chemical and Biological Aspects
2001
Marine natural products, form a field of scientific endeavour, that has recently grown considerably. The isolation, biological evaluation, chemical properties and synthetic elaborations of products of marine organisms have attracted the attention of organic chemists, medicinal chemists, biologists and pharmacists. In this context a structurally and biologically highly interesting class is represented by the marine natural products containing an indole moiety in a pure substituted form or in an anellated form. The present review summarizes primarily the actual results concerning these products as new pharmacologically attractive lead compounds for drug design. The chemistry, biological evalu…
Fragment- and negative image-based screening of phosphodiesterase 10A inhibitors.
2019
A novel virtual screening methodology called fragment- and negative image-based (F-NiB) screening is introduced and tested experimentally using phosphodiesterase 10A (PDE10A) as a case study. Potent PDE10A-specific small-molecule inhibitors are actively sought after for their antipsychotic and neuroprotective effects. The F-NiB combines features from both fragment-based drug discovery and negative image-based (NIB) screening methodologies to facilitate rational drug discovery. The selected structural parts of protein-bound ligand(s) are seamlessly combined with the negative image of the target's ligand-binding cavity. This cavity- and fragment-based hybrid model, namely its shape and electr…
Las revistas científicas-técnicas españolas de las ciencias de la Actividad Física y el Deporte: inventario y análisis de la calidad de contenido y d…
2003
The first inventory of Spanish scientific journals of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences is developed in this article. Methodological process of inventory development is described and problems related to research group decisions are commented. Basic information and dissemination and content quality indicators of these journals are also analysed. This allows to present the first approach to the current situation of the periodicals in this field of study. En este artículo se presenta el primer inventario de publicaciones periódicas españolas de carácter científico-técnico del campo de las Ciencias de la Actividad Física y el Deporte. Se explica el proceso metodológico seguido para su elabor…
Comparative study on the quality characteristics of some Egyptian mango cultivars used for food processing
2016
This study aims to investigate the physical, chemical, rheological and sensorial properties of six common mango (Mangifera indica) cultivars in Egypt. These common cultivars were Alfonse, Sedeka, Awis, Sinara, Sukari and Zibdia. Weights of mango fruits ranged between 246.6 and 549.2 g. The highest significant value of sphericity was in Alfonse fruits (0.82), whereas the lowest value was 0.58 in Sinara fruits. The highest firmness value was 29.51 N in Sedeka fruits. The highest elasticity was 1.16 N/mm for Sukari fruits. The significantly color intensity chroma was recorded by Sinara, whereas the highest total color index (ΔE) was 88.41 for Sedeka mango cultivar. The significantly lowest pH …
Optical propagation of fractal fields. Experimental analysis in a single display
2001
An experimental device to show in a single display all the diffraction patterns generated by a 1D fractal structure is proposed. It is found that in addition to being the optimum display to see the evolution of the diffracted field through free space, some interesting features, such as continuous evaluation of self-similarity from the object to the far field, can be obtained experimentally.
An inquiry-based approach to Maxwell distribution: a case study with engineering students
2013
The concept of distribution is a fundamental component of statistical thinking. This paper describes a teaching approach for it that uses a specific activity related to the field of statistical mechanics. The concept of the velocity distribution of a particle system is dealt with using an inquiry-based approach involving an experimental examination of Maxwell’s distribution. Some outcomes of a teaching experiment held at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Palermo, Italy are described.
An exploratory lattice study of decays at next-to-leading order in the chiral expansion
2005
Abstract We present the first direct evaluation of Δ I = 3 / 2 K → π π matrix elements with the aim of determining all the low-energy constants at NLO in the chiral expansion. Our numerical investigation demonstrates that it is indeed possible to determine the K → π π matrix elements directly for the masses and momenta used in the simulation with good precision. In this range however, we find that the matrix elements do not satisfy the predictions of NLO chiral perturbation theory. For the chiral extrapolation we therefore use a hybrid procedure which combines the observed polynomial behavior in masses and momenta of our lattice results, with NLO chiral perturbation theory at lower masses. …
