The link between vulnerability and social exclusion and criminal trajectories. An association study

2017

Term to Exclude: Rom Populations as Immigrants/Nomads in (Southern) Italy

2012

The aim of this paper is to contribute to the debate of the workshop “Immigration and Gateway Cities” through the analysis of a specific, “side” aspect of the whole thematic. The conditions of Rom populations in (southern) Italy present very (stereo)typical characteristics, nevertheless, I suggest they might be critical exemplifications of global issues which regard millions of people - immigrants but not just them –, in the whole Europe: the so called “blackening” (Yiftachel, 2009) of insurgent informalities and citizenships. The presented cases – the “temporary” nomad camp of Palermo and the stake of the camp of Ponticelli in Napoli – and the general Italian context will appear to be some…

Totally asymmetric exclusion process fed by using a non-Poissonian clock

2015

In this article we consider the one-dimensional totally asymmetric open-boundary exclusion process fed by a process with power-law-distributed waiting times. More specifically, we use a modified Pareto distribution to define the jump rate for jumps into the system. We then characterize the propagation of fluctuations through the system by kinetic Monte Carlo simulations and by numerical evaluation of the steady-state partition function. peerReviewed

Detection of Internet robots using a Bayesian approach

2015

A large part of Web traffic on e-commerce sites is generated not by human users but by Internet robots: search engine crawlers, shopping bots, hacking bots, etc. In practice, not all robots, especially the malicious ones, disclose their identities to a Web server and thus there is a need to develop methods for their detection and identification. This paper proposes the application of a Bayesian approach to robot detection based on characteristics of user sessions. The method is applied to the Web traffic from a real e-commerce site. Results show that the classification model based on the cluster analysis with the Ward's method and the weighted Euclidean metric is very effective in robot det…

2014

This article summarises Valencia’s current institutional response for women, above all those suffering processes of social exclusion and violence. Some of the most important regional services and resources are the General Social Services (which include economic benefits such as emergency aid or the Guaranteed Citizens’ Income), services providing information and advice such as (the Infodona Centre or a hotline of legal advice for women) and specific resources and social services (+Life program, 24 Hour Women’s Centres and protection centres ranging from emergency shelters to sheltered housing). This article will provide relevant data on these services and resources obtained through reports …

Evaluation of a public policy for combating exclusions : the case of an "insertion" class in the final year of junior secondary school

2005

Since 1975, the expression "single college" is regularly evoked to describe the first cycle of secondary education in France. However, since 1992, classes named "third of insertion", neither dedicated to general education, nor assimilable to those with adapted teaching have been functioning for mailing pupils. At the cross-roads of political, historical, economic and social problems, this study tries to articulate each one of these fields, with the student body, placed at the centre of these questions, being both from an underprivileged social category and having experienced school failure. The analysis which follows demands simultaneously research on the concept of "insertion", the name of…

Cardiovascular Health in Migrants. Current status and issues for prevention. A Collaborative Multidisciplinary Task Force Report

2014

OBJECTIVES: To review information on cardiovascular health and migration, to stress the attention of researchers that much needs to be done in the collection of sound data in Italy and to allow policy makers identifying this issue as an important public health concern. BACKGROUND: In Italy, the rate of immigrants in the total number of residents increased from 2.5% in 1990 to 7.4% in 2010, and currently exceeds 10% in regions such as Lombardia, Emilia Romagna and Toscana. METHODS: A consensus statement was developed by approaching relevant Italian national scientific societies involved in cardiovascular prevention. Task force members were identified by the president and/or the boards of eac…

Junk food’ o healthy food?
