Improving Energy Expenditure Estimation in Wrist-Worn Wearables by Augmenting Heart Rate Data With Heat Flux Measurement

2021

Wearable electronics are often used for estimating the energy expenditure of the user based on heart rate measurement. While heart rate is a good predictor of calorie consumption at high intensities, it is less precise at low intensity levels, which translates into inaccurate results when estimating daily net energy expenditure. In this study, heart rate measurement was augmented with heat flux (HF) measurement, a form of direct calorimetry. A physical exercise test on a group of 15 people showed that HF measurement can improve the accuracy of calorie consumption estimates especially during rest and low-intensity activity when used in conjunction with heart rate information and vital backgr…

Post-exercise heart rate variability : a new approach to evaluation of exercise-induced physiological training load

2015

To improve maximal endurance performance, an optimal physiological training load, i.e. the balance between exercise and recovery, is required. In general, the goal of a single endurance exercise session is to transiently disturb body homeostasis after which a so-called supercompensation, an improvement in performance, can occur if the recovery period is adequate. The physical training load of a single exercise session consists of the combination of exercise intensity and duration. At the present time, there is no single tool to quantify the amount of disturbance of homeostasis that is equal to physiological training load of a single exercise session. Heart rate variability (HRV), the change…

Effects of eight weeks physical training on physical performance and heart rate variability in children

2013

Kraama, Liisa. 2013. Kahdeksan viikon fyysisen harjoittelun vaikutus lasten fyysiseen suorituskykyyn ja sydämen sykevaihteluun. Jyväskylän yliopisto, Liikuntabiologian laitos. Liikuntafysiologian Pro gradu –tutkielma. 52 s. Aikuisilla on harjoittelun aikaansaamien fyysisen suorituskyvyn muutosten todettu olevan yhteydessä sykevaihtelun, erityisesti parasympaattista aktiivisuutta kuvaavaan korkean taajuuden sykevaihtelun, kasvuun. Effects of eight weeks of physical training on physical performance and heart rate variability in children

2017

Study aim: Physically active adults have been shown to have higher heart rate variability (HRV) than less active adults, but less is known about children in this regard. In adults, training-induced changes in physical performance have been shown to be related to increase in HRV, especially in its high frequency component (HF), which is a marker of parasympathetic activity. The purpose of this study was to examine whether 8 weeks of instructed physical training would improve physical performance and cardiac autonomic function (HRV) in secondary school pupils and to examine the relationship between changes in physical performance and the function of the autonomic nervous system. Material and …

Device-based physical activity levels among Finnish adolescents with functional limitations

2019

Background Monitoring physical activity among young adolescents with disabilities is a top academic priority. People with disabilities are a diverse group with various abilities in different human functioning. Therefore, we used a novel approach through functional limitations as a marker for disabilities and examined physical activity levels. Objective To investigate the levels and differences in light (LPA) and moderate-to-vigorous (MVPA) intensity physical activity between young adolescents with and without functional limitations. Methods The study included young adolescents (n = 1436) aged 11–15 years olds who attended general schools that were part of the 2016 Finnish School-aged Physic…

El edificio gremial de los abaixadors o tundidores, en Valencia

2020

In the ?barri del mercat?, in the city of Valencia and very close to its Lonja, there is a building complex which is the object of this study. The research, carried out from the simple field of toponymy, to the constructive analysis, lead us to suppose that it is the building of the Valencian trade union of cloth-shearers. It can be seen how the building now camouflaged by other subsequent interventions, corresponds to a type that cannot be related to those usually built in the city of Valencia. Its origins clearly from the Valencian self-governing period splendor, its dimensions and the finishes used in its construction seem to refer to a medieval workshop. Considerations for the Analysis of Small Extracellular Vesicles in Physical Exercise

2020

Physical exercise induces acute physiological changes leading to enhanced tissue cross-talk and a liberation of extracellular vesicles (EVs) into the circulation. EVs are cell-derived membranous entities which carry bioactive material, such as proteins and RNA species, and are important mediators of cell-cell-communication. Different types of physical exercise interventions trigger the release of diverse EV subpopulations, which are hypothesized to be involved in physiological adaptation processes leading to health benefits and longevity. Large EVs (“microvesicles” and “microparticles”) are studied frequently in the context of physical exercise using straight forward flow cytometry approach…

When care of the child by the parents is not possible and is attributed jointly to two people living together who subsequently stop living together, it is necessary to determine which of them will exercise the functions inherent to the care from that moment on. The effect of a failure and submaximal blood flow restriction resistance exercise protocol on changes in muscle size, strength and swelling

2016

Masteroppgave i idrettsvitenskap - Universitetet i Agder 2016 Introduction: Blood flow restricted resistance exercise (BFRRE) can induce rapid increases in muscle size, strength and swelling. No previous research has investigated the importance of conducting BFRRE to voluntary failure and few studies has been carried out to investigate associations between swelling and muscle size. Therefore, the aim of the present study was twofold (1) compare changes in muscle size and strength between a failure (FA) and submaximal (SU) BFRRE protocol (2) investigate associations between swelling and muscle size. Methods: Seventeen untrained men had their legs randomized to FA and SU protocols. The interv…
