Physiotherapy for patients with anorexia nervosa

2013

The integration of physiotherapy as an adjunctive treatment for patients with an eating disorder within psychiatric health care and rehabilitation may sound unusual. However, physiotherapists have specific expertise in both the ‘body’ and ‘the body in movement’, two important issues integral to eating disorder pathology. Based on our clinical practice and the current body of scientific evidence, a rationale and clinical guidance for incorporating physiotherapy into treatment for patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) is presented. Two main indications for physiotherapy are proposed for patients with AN: (1) the distorted body experience with a specific focus on perception, attitudes, and behav…

Do Running and Strength Exercises Reduce Daily Muscle Inactivity Time?

2016

Understanding how a specific exercise changes daily activity patterns is important when designing physical activity interventions. We examined the effects of strength and interval running exercise sessions on daily activity patterns using recordings of quadriceps and hamstring muscle electromyographic (EMG) activity and inactivity. Five male and five female subjects taking part in a 10-week training programme containing both strength and interval running training sessions were measured for daily muscle EMG activities during three days: on a strength day, an interval running day, and a day without exercise. EMG was measured using textile electrodes embedded into sport shorts that were worn 9…

The Stretch-Shortening Cycle

2006

Neuromuscular fatigue has traditionally been examined using isolated forms of either isometric, concentric or eccentric actions. However, none of these actions are naturally occurring in human (or animal) ground locomotion. The basic muscle function is defined as the stretch-shortening cycle (SSC), where the preactivated muscle is first stretched (eccentric action) and then followed by the shortening (concentric) action. As the SSC taxes the skeletal muscles very strongly mechanically, its influence on the reflex activation becomes apparent and very different from the isolated forms of muscle actions mentioned above. The ground contact phases of running, jumping and hopping etc. are example…

Analysis of the psicometric properties of a multiplication and division processes assessment scale

2019

Esta comunicación se encuentra disponible en la siguiente URL: http://www.infad.eu/RevistaINFAD/OJS/index.php/IJODAEP/article/view/1464/1321 Este número está dedicado a la "Psicología de la Educación y Saberes Originarios". The domain of multiplication and division operations depends on both algorithm management and the ability to identify the semantic structure of the problem and to translate it into mathematical language. Many students present difficulties in identifying the semantic structure of the problem but not applying the algorithm when the problem is presented numericaly. The aim of the study is to validate an assessment tool of the processes involved in multiplication and divisio…

The acute effects of different high-intensity conditioning activities on sprint performance differ between sprinters of different strength and power …

2021

The purpose of the present study was to examine the effect of different conditioning activities (CAs) on short-term increase in sprint performance. In twelve male sprinters (21.1+2.6 years, 100 m performance: 11.5+0.6 s) their body composition, half squat maximum strength, 100 m sprinting and countermovement jump performances were evaluated. The performance of a 50 m sprint (splits at 10 m, 30 m and 50 m) was evaluated before and 5, 10 and 15 min after four postactivation performance enhancement CAs on different occasions: [1] 3 sets x 4 s maximum isometric half squat (IHF), [2] 3 sets x 3 consecutive countermovement jumps (cCMJs), [3] 3 repetitions x 30 m overspeed sprinting (OVSP) and [4]…

"Write in English on your notebook" : analysis of creative writing exercises in a Finnish EFL workbook

2016

Vaikka luovalla kirjoittamisella on tutkittu olevan paljon etuja vieraan ja toisen kielen oppimisessa, Perusopetuksen opetussuunnitelman perusteet (2004) ei tarjoa täsmällisiä ohjeita luovan kirjoittamisen opetukseen englannin kielen oppiaineessa. Täten luovan kirjoittamisen tehtävien suunnittelu on opettajien ja oppimateriaalien valmistajien vastuulla. Oppikirjat ovat edelleen hyvin laajasti käytettyjä oppimateriaaleja, joten niiden tutkiminen tarjoaa tietoa myös opetuksesta yleensä. Tutkielman päämääränä on selvittää luovan kirjoittamisen tehtävien esiintymistä yhdessä suomalaisessa englannin kielen tehtäväkirjassa. Tätä tutkittiin kahden tutkimuskysymyksen avulla, joista ensimmäinen kosk…

Impacto científico en los artículos sobre aplicaciones terapéuticas de las prácticas orientales cuerpo-mente (2006-2010)

2014

Global research on mind-body therapies is analysed, by focussing on scholarly articles on three Eastern disciplines (yoga, tai chi and qi gong) and three procedures (meditation, breathing exercises and relaxation). The bibliographic research was done using the Scopus database. The search was limited to the biomedical areas and to the years 2006-2010. We have analysed 2,363 articles published by 959 different journals. They were written by 6,583 authors from 2,162 institutions in 65 countries. Indicators of scientific productivity and impact were calculated for institutions, countries and subject areas, and the collaboration between authors and institutions was also determined. We have obser…

Does Stretching Training Influence Muscular Strength? A Systematic Review With Meta-Analysis and Meta-Regression

2022

Thomas, E, Ficarra, S, Nunes, JP, Paoli, A, Bellafiore, M, Palma, A, and Bianco, A. Does stretching training influence muscular strength? A systematic review with meta-analysis and meta-regression. J Strength Cond Res XX(X): 000-000, 2022-This aim of this study was to review articles that performed stretching training and evaluated the effects on muscular strength. Literature search was performed using 3 databases. Studies were included if they compared the effects on strength following stretching training vs. a nontraining control group or stretching training combined with resistance training (RT) vs. an RT-only group, after at least 4 weeks of intervention. The meta-analyses were performe…

2017
