Maximum likelihood difference scaling of image quality in compression-degraded images.

2007

International audience; Lossy image compression techniques allow arbitrarily high compression rates but at the price of poor image quality. We applied maximum likelihood difference scaling to evaluate image quality of nine images, each compressed via vector quantization to ten different levels, within two different color spaces, RGB and CIE 1976 L(*)a(*)b(*). In L(*)a(*)b(*) space, images could be compressed on average by 32% more than in RGB space, with little additional loss in quality. Further compression led to marked perceptual changes. Our approach permits a rapid, direct measurement of the consequences of image compression for human observers.

Hey Teacher, Don’t Leave Them Kids Alone: Action Is Better for Memory than Reading

2017

International audience; There is no consensus on how the enactment effect (EE), although it is robust, enhances memory. Researchers are currently investigating the cognitive processes underlying this effect, mostly during adulthood; the link between EE and crucial function identified in adulthood such as episodic memory and binding process remains elusive. Therefore, this study aims to verify the existence of EE in 6–10 years old and assess cognitive functions potentially linked to this effect in order to shed light on the mechanisms underlying the EE during childhood. Thirty-five children (15 second graders and 20 fifth graders) were included in this study. They encoded 24 action phrases f…

Visualizing linguistic variation in a network of Latin documents and scribes

2018

This article explores whether and how network visualization can benefit philological and historical-linguistic study. This is illustrated with a corpus-based investigation of scribes' language use in a lemmatized and morphologically annotated corpus of documentary Latin (Late Latin Charter Treebank, LLCT2). We extract four continuous linguistic variables from LLCT2 and utilize a gradient colour palette in Gephi to visualize the variable values as node attributes in a trimodal network which consists of the documents, writers, and writing locations underlying the same corpus. We call this network the "LLCT2 network". The geographical coordinates of the location nodes form an approximate map, …

On listening to atonal variants of two Piano Sonatas by Beethoven

2009

International audience; We investigated the contribution of tonal relationships to the perception of musical ideas and to the feelings of "arousal." Two excerpts of piano sonatas by Beethoven and two atonal variants were used as experimental stimuli. This manipulation destroyed the tonal relationships but preserved both the local and global temporal organization (rhythm and formal). Listeners were asked to indicate the onset of musical ideas, to estimate the arousing properties of the music in a continuous response task, and to rate the similarity of the pieces. A drastic change in the pitch structure strongly affected judgments of similarity. However, it had no effect on the segmentation o…

A note on Hilbert’s weak nullstellensatz

2015

In this article, through a suitable generalization of the well-known notion of spectrum of an element of an arbitrary normed algebra of Operator Theory, it will be possible to give another simple proof of the Hilbert’s Weak Nullstellensatz.

Biological nitrogen fixation for the 21st century

1998

The biodiversity of nitrogen-fixing organisms is huge. Taxonomic and phylogenetic research is needed to structure this diversity, to facilitate communication among scientists, and to increase our understanding of the evolution and biology of diazotrophs. Molecular tools for taxonomic and biodiversity studies of diazotrophic rhizobia, frankiae, cyanobacteria and bacilli are presented in sections 2 to 5. Sections 6 to 9 focus on problems with genus and species assignment.

Individuals Across the Sciences

2015

International audience; What are individuals? How can they be identified? These are crucial questions for philosophers and scientists alike. Criteria of individuality seem to differ markedly between metaphysics and the empirical sciences - and this might well explain why no work has hitherto attempted to relate the contributions of metaphysics, physics and biology on this question. This timely volume brings together various strands of research into 'individuality', examining how different sciences handle the issue, and reflecting on how this scientific work relates to metaphysical concerns. The collection makes a major contribution to clarifying and overcoming obstacles to the construction …
