Spinodal lines and Flory-Huggins free-energies for solutions of human hemoglobins HbS and HbA

1991

Gelation of deoxygenated solutions of sickle-cell human Hemoglobin (HbS) is of high theoretical interest and it has serious pathological consequences. For this reason HbS is probably the most studied protein capable of self-organization. This notwithstanding, the location in the T, c plane of the region of thermodynamic instability of solutions of deoxy-HbS (as bounded by the spinodal line and as distinct from the gelation region) has remained unknown, along with related values of Flory-Huggins enthalpies and entropies. In the present work this information is derived from experiments for the two cases of (deoxy) HbS and of human adult hemoglobin (HbA). Experiments also show critical exponen…

Shakedown theorems for elastic–plastic solids in the framework of gradient plasticity

2008

Abstract Static and kinematic shakedown theorems are given for a class of generalized standard materials endowed with a hardening saturation surface in the framework of strain gradient plasticity. The so-called residual-based gradient plasticity theory is employed. The hardening law admits a hardening potential, which is a C 1 -continuous function of a set of kinematic internal variables and of their spatial gradients, and is required to satisfy a global sign restriction (but not to be necessarily convex). The totally produced, the accumulated and the freely moving dislocations per unit volume, distinguished as statistically stored and geometrically necessary ones, are in this way accounted…

Mutual inductance for an explicitly finite number of turns

2011

Published version of an article published in Progress In Electromagnetics Research B, 28, 273-287. Also available from the publisher at http://www.jpier.org/pierb/pier.php?paper=10110103 Non coaxial mutual inductance calculations, based on a Bessel function formulation, are presented for coils modelled by an explicitly finite number of circular turns. The mutual inductance of two such turns can be expressed as an integral of a product of three Bessel functions and an exponential factor, and it is shown that the exponential factors can be analytically summed as a simple geometric progression, or other related sums. This allows the mutual inductance of two thin solenoids to be expressed as an…

A Cross-Sectional Analysis of Growth and Profit Rate Distribution: The Spanish Case

2022

We analyse the time evolution of the empirical cross-sectional distribution of firms’ profit and growth rates. In particular, we analyse the conditional properties of the empirical distributions depending on the size of the firms and the business cycle phase. In order to do so, we employ the Laplace distribution as a benchmark, further considering the Subbotin and Asymmetric Exponential Power (AEP hereafter) distributions, to capture the potential asymmetry and leptokurtosis of the empirical distribution. Our results show that the profit rates of large firms are characterised by an asymmetric Laplace distribution with parameters largely independent of the business cycle phase. Small firms, …

Shakedown analysis for a class of strengthening materials within the framework of gradient plasticity

2010

Abstract The classical shakedown theory is extended to a class of perfectly plastic materials with strengthening effects (Hall–Petch effects). To this aim, a strain gradient plasticity model previously advanced by Polizzotto (2010) is used, whereby a featuring strengthening law provides the strengthening stress, i.e. the increase of the yield strength produced by plastic deformation, as a degree-zero homogeneous second-order differential form in the accumulated plastic strain with associated higher order boundary conditions. The extended static (Melan) and kinematic (Koiter) shakedown theorems are proved together with the related lower bound and upper bound theorems. The shakedown limit loa…

Tracer diffusion properties of core-shell latex films studied by photoinduced grating relaxation

2007

This article reports the application of the Photo-Induced Grating Relaxation technique (also known as Forced Rayleigh Scattering) to investigate the dynamics of films prepared from structured core–shell latex particles via the transport property of the photochromic tracer molecule Aberchrome 540®. The core–shell particles were prepared with a fluoropolymer core (immiscible and impenetrable to the tracer) and a poly(butyl methacrylate) shell. The incompletely dried films (with residual water) manifest their spatial heterogeneity via non-Fickian behavior (spatial scale- dependent apparent diffusion coefficient). The diffusion data was interpreted using the two-state diffusion model, previousl…

Seed dispersal, braeding system, tree density and the spatial pattern of trees – a simulation approach

2002

Summary Tropical tree populations with low densities and with clumped spatial distributions are at risk in the face of fragmentation. It is therefore important to understand factors driving spatial patterns of tree populations. An important set of factors which may influence the spatial pattern of plants, could be the spatial distribution of possible seed sources such as the breeding system (monoecious, dioecious), tree density and the spatial pattern of the parent population. Another set of important factors might be dispersal of seeds away from the parent plants characterised by the mean dispersal distance and by the distribution of dispersal distances (either negative exponential or logn…

Positive L1 observer design for positive Switched systems

2014

Published version of an article in the journal: Circuits, Systems, and Signal Processing. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s00034-013-9737-6 This paper investigates the problem of L1 observer design for positive switched systems. Firstly, a new kind of positive L1 observer is proposed for positive switched linear delay-free systems with observable and unobservable subsystems. Based on the average dwell time approach, a sufficient condition is proposed to ensure the existence of the positive L1 observer. Under the condition obtained, the estimated error converges to zero exponentially, and the L1 -gain from the disturbance input to the estimated error is less t…

The MLE of the mean of the exponential distribution based on grouped data is stochastically increasing

2016

This paper refers to the problem stated by Balakrishnan et al. (2002). They proved that maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) of the exponential mean obtained from grouped samples is stochastically ordered provided that the sequence of the successive distances between inspection times is decreasing. In this paper we show that the assumption of monotonicity of the sequence of distances can be dropped.

Investigating Long-Range Dependence in E-Commerce Web Traffic

2016

This paper addresses the problem of investigating long-range dependence (LRD) and self-similarity in Web traffic. Popular techniques for estimating the intensity of LRD via the Hurst parameter are presented. Using a set of traces of a popular e-commerce site, the presence and the nature of LRD in Web traffic is examined. Our results confirm the self-similar nature of traffic at a Web server input, however the resulting estimates of the Hurst parameter vary depending on the trace and the technique used.
