Exporting a Google Earth™ aided earthflow susceptibility model: a test in central Sicily
2012
Abstract In the framework of a regional landslide susceptibility study in southern Sicily, a test has been carried out in the Tumarrano river basin (about 80 km2) aimed at characterizing its landslide susceptibility conditions by exporting a ‘‘source model’’, defined and trained inside a limited (about 20 km2) representative sector (the ‘‘source area’’). Also, the possibility of exploiting Google Earth TM software and photo-images databank to produce the landslide archives has been checked. The susceptibility model was defined, according to a multivariate geostatistic approach based on the conditional analysis, using unique condition units (UCUs), which were obtained by combining four selec…
Recent advances in 2D and 3D in vitro systems using primary hepatocytes, alternative hepatocyte sources and non-parenchymal liver cells and their use…
2013
This review encompasses the most important advances in liver functions and hepatotoxicity and analyzes which mechanisms can be studied in vitro. In a complex architecture of nested, zonated lobules, the liver consists of approximately 80 % hepatocytes and 20 % non-parenchymal cells, the latter being involved in a secondary phase that may dramatically aggravate the initial damage. Hepatotoxicity, as well as hepatic metabolism, is controlled by a set of nuclear receptors (including PXR, CAR, HNF-4α, FXR, LXR, SHP, VDR and PPAR) and signaling pathways. When isolating liver cells, some pathways are activated, e.g., the RAS/MEK/ERK pathway, whereas others are silenced (e.g. HNF-4α), resulting in…
DO TRANSPORT COSTS HAVE A DIFFERENTIAL EFFECT ON TRADE AT THE SECTORAL LEVEL?
2008
This article aims to analyse the determinants of transport costs and to investigate their influence in international trade with a sample of disaggregate trade data. First, we estimate a transport-cost function using cross-section data on maritime and overland transport for four sectors: agro-industry, ceramic tiles, motor vehicle parts and accessories, and electrical and mechanical household appliances, obtained from interviews held with Spanish exporters and logistics operators in 2001. Second, we study the relationship between transport costs and trade and estimate the elasticity of trade with respect to transport costs for each sector. Important differences for high value- and low value-…
The shadow price of foreign exchange with minimum wages
2001
Abstract This note derives the shadow price of foreign exchange in a small open economy with minimum wage unemployment under tariffs, quotas and voluntary export restraints. The analysis is conducted in a dual general equilibrium framework with many goods and factors.
Estimating the gravity equation with the actual number of exporting firms
2013
Recurrent missense variant in the nuclear export signal of FMR1 associated with FXS-like phenotype including intellectual disability, ASD, facial abn…
2021
Fragile X syndrome (FXS; MIM 300624) is an X-linked genetic disorder characterized by physical abnormalities associated with intellectual disability and a wide spectrum of neurological and psychiatric impairments. FXS occurs more frequently in males, 1 in 5000 males and 1 in 8000 females accounting for 1-2% of overall intellectual disability (ID). In more than 99% of patients, FXS results from expansions of a CGG triplet repeat (>200 in male) of the FMR1 gene. In the last years an increasing number, albeit still limited, of FXS subjects carrying FMR1 mutations including deletions, splicing errors, missense, and nonsense variants was reported. Nevertheless, the studies concerning the func…
Transport of mRNA from Nucleus to Cytoplasm
1987
Publisher Summary Transport of mRNP (messenger ribonucleoprotein) from nucleus to cytoplasm plays an important role in gene expression in eukaryotic cells. This chapter focuses on energy-(ATP)-dependent mRNP transport. Nucleocytoplasmic transport of ribosomal RNA can also be induced by ATP, but also occurs by varying [Ca 2+ ]:[Mg 2+ ]. Release of ribosomal RNPs seems to be accompanied by an expansion of the nucleus. Nucleocytoplasmic transport of mRNA seems to be also distinct from the export of tRNA or the exchange of snRNPs and proteins across the nuclear envelope. Nucleocytoplasmic transport of tRNA seems to involve a facilitated diffusion mechanism, showing saturability and sequence spe…
Insights into mRNP biogenesis provided by new genetic interactions among export and transcription factors.
2012
Abstract Background The various steps of mRNP biogenesis (transcription, processing and export) are interconnected. It has been shown that the transcription machinery plays a pivotal role in mRNP assembly, since several mRNA export factors are recruited during transcription and physically interact with components of the transcription machinery. Although the shuttling DEAD-box protein Dbp5p is concentrated on the cytoplasmic fibrils of the NPC, previous studies demonstrated that it interacts physically and genetically with factors involved in transcription initiation. Results We investigated the effect of mutations affecting various components of the transcription initiation apparatus on the…

Evidence for a direct interaction of Rev protein with nuclear envelop mRNA-translocation system.
1991
The interaction of the Rev protein from human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) with the nucleocytoplasmic mRNA-transport system was investigated. In gel-shift assay, the recombinant Rev protein used in this study selectively bound to the Rev-responsive element (RRE) region of HIV-1 env-specific RNA. Nitrocellulose-filter-binding studies and Northern/Western-blotting experiments revealed an association constant of approximately 1 x 10(10) M-1. The Rev protein also strongly bound to isolated nuclear envelopes from H9 cells, containing the poly(A)-binding site (= mRNA carrier) and the nucleoside triphosphatase (= NTPase), which are thought to be involved in nuclear export of poly(A)-rich …
