Do happy faces really modulate liking for Jackson Pollock art and statistical fractal noise images?

Flexas et al. (2013) demonstrated that happy faces increase preference for abstract art if seen in short succession. We could not replicate their findings. In our first experiment, we tested whether valence, saliency or arousal of facial primes can modulate liking of Jackson Pollock art crops. In the second experiment, the emphasis was on testing another type of abstract visual stimuli which possess similar low-level image features: statistical fractal noise images. Pollock crops were rated significantly higher when primed with happy faces in contrast to neutral faces, but not differently to the no-prime condition. What Is the Limit of Atom Encapsulation for Icosahedral Carboranes?

The stability of endohedral carboranes X@{1,n-C2B10H12} (X = Li(+), Be(2+); n = 2, 7, 12) and X@{CB11H12(-)} (X = Li(+), Be(2+)) is studied using electronic structure calculations with the B3LYP/6-311+G(d,p) model. Our calculations suggest that all endohedral compounds are local energy minima; for the exohedral complexes X···cage, the global energy minimum always corresponds to the X atom above a triangular face of the icosahedron. In the latter the X atom is furthest apart from the carbon atoms of the cage. As opposite to exohedral {Be(2+)···cage} complexes, no global energy minima were found for exohedral complexes {Li(+)···cage} whereby a carbon atom is present in the triangular face of …

White House Press Briefings, daily meetings with the press held by the White House Press Secretary, are the main information conduit for the White House (Kumar 2007). They are considered a “political chess game” where the Press Secretary and the press face a “wrestling match” (Partington 2006: 16). Our analysis is carried out on a corpus comprising all the Press Briefings across three presidencies from Clinton to Obama. The additional mark-up includes information about individual speakers and their role, allowing us to compare different discourse strategies adopted by the participants in the briefings at different points in time. Cockayne's syndrome is a rare recessive autosomal disorder. Its frequency at birth is very low. In the classical form (type 1) the clinical appearance becomes evident by the second year of life. Urban areas are increasing worldwide at a dramatic rate and their soils definitely deserve more attention than they have received in the past. In urban environments, soils potentially provide the same ecosystem services as in rural and wild environments, although in some cases they are depleted of their basic functions, such as when they lose their productive and filtering capacities because of sealing, and become mere supports for infrastructures.
