Dupuytren's contracture: an update of biomolecular aspects and therapeutic perspectives.
2005
The so-called fibrogenic cytokines, able to induce the growth of fibroblasts and their differentiation into myofibroblasts and to stimulate their production of extracellular matrix, are involved in the genesis of Dupuytren’s contracture. Although many studies have been made of biomolecular aspects of palmar fibromatosis, practical applications from them are still far from imminent because of the real difficulty of blocking their action in vivo, even in a chronic, progressive lesion such as Dupuytren’s disease. Consequently, surgical excision of the palmar fascia still remains the treatment of choice.
Plantar fascia evaluation with a low-field MRI scanner in weight-bering position: our initial experience in patients with plantar fasciitis and in he…
2009
Purpose: To assess the usefulness of weight-bearing examination of the ankle performed with a low-field MRI scanner in the evaluation of plantar fascia in normal healthy volunteers and in patients with a clinical evidence of plantar fasciitis. Methods and Materials: We retrospectively evaluated ankle MR examinations in two groups of 40 patients each, performed between January and July 2008. Spin echo T1W, Gradient echo T2W, and Short Tau Inversion Recovery (STIR) images were acquired with a 0.2 T scanner (G-Scan, Esaote Biomedica, Genoa, Italy) in both weight-bearing position and normal conventional supine position. A dedicated extremities transmitter/receiver coil was used. The lesion site…
Variations in the Thickness of the Plantar Fascia After Training Based in Training Race. A Pilot Study.
2020
Plantar fascia (PF) is a connective tissue made up of mostly type 1 collagen that is subjected to constant loads. This study evaluated the effect of continuous running on tissue stress in the PF by measuring changes in the thickness of the PF using ultrasound scans. It was a cross-sectional study involving 24 runners from the University of Valen- cia, recruited as volunteers between December 2018 and February 2019. A variety of data was recorded: (age, body mass index, type of footwear, number of workouts per week, KM run per week, sports injuries in the last year, pre and postrace ultrasound PF measurements). There were significant differences in the 3 postrace meas- urements of the left f…
Estimation of dynamic energy budget parameters for the Mediterranean toothcarp (Aphanius fasciatus)
2014
Organisms adopt different sets of physiological, behavioural and morphological trade-offs in order to cope with natural environmental fluctuations. This has consequential rebounds on ecological processes and population dynamics. Such aspects become crucial for sex-dimorphic species, where sex-specific growth variation could mirror different tactics both in energy acquisition and investment between maximum female and male body size with cascading effects on population demography. To date, different approaches have been used in order to understand the causes of individual growth rate changes in ectotherm indeterminate growers, most of which failed. Here, we propose the use of a mechanistic mo…

Data from: The cotton stainer's gut microbiota suppresses infection of a co-transmitted trypanosomatid parasite
2018
The evolutionary and ecological success of many insects is attributed to mutualistic partnerships with bacteria that confer hosts with novel traits including food digestion, nutrient supplementation, detoxification of harmful compounds and defense against natural enemies. Dysdercus fasciatus firebugs (Hemiptera: Pyrrhocoridae), commonly known as cotton stainers, possess a simple but distinctive gut bacterial community including B-vitamin supplementing Coriobacteriaceae symbionts. In addition, their guts are often infested with the intestinal trypanosomatid parasite Leptomonas pyrrhocoris (Kinetoplastida: Trypanosomatidae). In this study, using experimental bioassays and fluorescence in situ…
Laparoscopic laterally extended pelvic resection for gynecological malignancies
2020
Lateral isolated gynecological cancer infiltrating the pelvic side wall has been considered non-operable with a poor oncological outcome.[1][1] The development of the laterally extended endopelvic resection and surgical progress for disease, overcoming the endopelvic fascia infiltrating muscles and
Pheromones linked to sexual behaviors excite the appetitive phase of feeding behavior of Aplysia fasciata . I. Modulation and excitation of appetitiv…
1998
Pheromones presumably secreted by mating conspecifics – as well as homogenates containing tissue that is homologous with the atrial gland – increase the time that Aplysia fasciata spend feeding. This effect is caused by increasing the number of feeding episodes initiated in response to food, whereas the duration of a feeding bout remains unchanged. The increase in the number of feeding episodes is related to increases in head waving and crawling, i.e., appetitive movements that bring the animal into contact with food, as well as an increase in the responsiveness to food after it is contacted. Releasing a homogenate containing atrial gland tissue, or egg laying hormone, in the water near the…
