Measuring readiness for entrepreneurship: An information tool proposal
2016
Abstract A profound review of the literature on entrepreneurship reveals that it does not exist a specific information tool to measure the individuals’ readiness for entrepreneurship. The purpose of this research has been building such kind of instrument to estimate the individuals’ readiness for entrepreneurship. Its design takes in consideration the inclusion of the main variables identified by the literature as those most associated with entrepreneurial profiles. These variables have been grouped into three categories: sociological, psychological and managerial-entrepreneurial. Each group provides batteries of items which are evaluated thanks to a specific scoring system. The final objec…
Dialektmerkmale des Deutschen in den sprachbiographischen Interviews der bilingualen Oberschlesier
2022
The article is based on language biographies which come from the interviews conducted as part of the German-Polish project LangGener with native inhabitants of the former German territories of today’s Poland. Out of 124 recordings, 20 linguistic biographical interviews with respondents from Upper Silesia were subjected to analysis where special attention was paid to the features of Silesian German dialects occurring in them. Even though the Silesian linguistic landscape is now considered by researchers to be a historical object of studies due to the shifting of borders after World War II and the accompanying population exchange, the article shows that the linguistic material currently obtai…
Ambizioni e insuccessi di alcune politiche di sviluppo locale per il Mezzogiorno. Patti territoriali e Programmi integrati territoriali (Pit)
2008
In 1997 a “new programming” was launched in Italy by the Department of development and cohesion policies in Rome. One of the key features of this new phase was the emphasis on “endogenous” local development, i.e. a development which is mainly based on local actors and productive specializations. The new programming strikingly failed to deliver its expected results. Some wrong expectations were fostered with regard to local political elites (§§ 1). A certain concept of local development is inherently flawed (§§ 2). The first failure was that of “territorial agreements” (patti territoriali), but there is a remarkable reluctancy to admit it (§§ 3). Another experience of “local” development who…
Analysis of Teaching Personal and Social Responsibility model-based programmes applied in USA and Spain
2013
Caballero-Blanco P, Delgado-Noguera, MA, Escarti-Carbonell, A. Analysis of Teaching Personal and Social Responsibility model-based programmes applied in USA and Spain. J. Hum. Sport Exerc. Vol. 8, No. 2, pp. 427-441, 2013. Over the last three decades, several studies have applied Hellison’s Teaching Personal and Social Responsibility (TPSR) model; most of them have generated strong empirical evidences that support that theoretical framework. TPSR is a programme for positive youth development through physical activity. This article compares the different studies that have implemented the TPSR model in the United States and Spain. This paper reviews those researches by analysing their key fea…
noRANSAC for fundamental matrix estimation
2011
The estimation of the fundamental matrix from a set of corresponding points is a relevant topic in epipolar stereo geometry [10]. Due to the high amount of outliers between the matches, RANSAC-based approaches [7, 13, 29] have been used to obtain the fundamental matrix. In this paper two new contributes are presented: a new normalized epipolar error measure which takes into account the shape of the features used as matches [17] and a new strategy to compare fundamental matrices. The proposed error measure gives good results and it does not depend on the image scale. Moreover, the new evaluation strategy describes a valid tool to compare diffe rent RANSAC-based methods because it does not re…
Probabilistic Corner Detection for Facial Feature Extraction
2009
After more than 35 years of resarch, face processing is considered nowadays as one of the most important application of image analysis. It can be considered as a collection of problems (i.e., face detection, normalization, recognition and so on) each of which can be treated separately. Some face detection and face recognition techniques have reached a certain level of maturity, however facial feature extraction still represents the bottleneck of the entire process. In this paper we present a novel facial feature extraction approach that could be used for normalizing Viola-Jones detected faces and let them be recognized by an appearance-based face recognition method. For each observed featur…
Robustness Analysis of DCE-MRI-Derived Radiomic Features in Breast Masses: Assessing Quantization Levels and Segmentation Agreement
2022
Featured Application The use of highly robust radiomic features is fundamental to reduce intrinsic dependencies and to provide reliable predictive models. This work presents a study on breast tumor DCE-MRI considering the radiomic feature robustness against the quantization settings and segmentation methods. Machine learning models based on radiomic features allow us to obtain biomarkers that are capable of modeling the disease and that are able to support the clinical routine. Recent studies have shown that it is fundamental that the computed features are robust and reproducible. Although several initiatives to standardize the definition and extraction process of biomarkers are ongoing, th…
The role of physical activity on postural stability and fitness characteristics in pediatric patients with GH deficiency
2019
Purpose: Patients with growth hormone deficiency (GHD) show low fitness levels before GH treatment is started. Muscular strength, flexibility and postural stability are related to health and quality of life. Since it is widely recognized that physical activity increases GH secretion and GH could ameliorate fitness, if a high adherence to treatment is documented (1), the purpose of this study is to investigate any difference on posturographic parameters and muscular features in physically active children with GHD, treated with GH with a high adherence to the treatment, and compared with sedentary pediatric patients. Methods: 13 children (7 males, 6 females) with GHD were enrolled at the Univ…
Keypoint descriptor matching with context-based orientation estimation
2014
Abstract This paper presents a matching strategy to improve the discriminative power of histogram-based keypoint descriptors by constraining the range of allowable dominant orientations according to the context of the scene under observation. This can be done when the descriptor uses a circular grid and quantized orientation steps, by computing or providing a global reference orientation based on the feature matches. The proposed matching strategy is compared with the standard approaches used with the SIFT and GLOH descriptors and the recent rotation invariant MROGH and LIOP descriptors. A new evaluation protocol based on an approximated overlap error is presented to provide an effective an…
GUI Implementation of VCDtools, A Program to Analyze Computed Vibrational Circular Dichroism Spectra
2020
As computing power increases, vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) calculations on molecules of larger sizes and complexities become possible. At the same time, the spectra resulting from these computations become increasingly more cumbersome to analyze. Here, we describe the GUI implementation into the Amsterdam Density Functional (ADF) software package of VCDtools, a toolbox that provides a user-friendly means to analyze VCD spectra. Key features are the use of the generalized coupled oscillator analysis methods, as well as an easy visualization of the atomic electric and magnetic transition dipole moments which together provide detailed insight in the origin of the VCD intensity. Using s…
