Experimental Investigation on the Compressive Behaviour of Clay Brick Masonry Columns Confined by BFRP or Steel Wires

2016

This paper presents the results of an experimental research aiming to investigate on the compressive behavior of full size clay brick masonry columns reinforced with Basalt Fiber Reinforced Cementitious Matrix (BFRCM) or with steel wires collaring. Uniaxial compressive tests were performed on eight retrofitted columns and four control specimens. Two masonry strength were considered by varying the mortar grade. Results are presented and discussed in terms of axial stress-strain relationships, failure modes and crack patterns of the specimens tested up to failure. For the limit of investigated variables, comparisons with unreinforced specimens show the ability of these alternative techniques …

Durability assessment of basalt fiber polymer as reinforcement to expanded clay concrete in harsh environment

2021

Basalt fiber-reinforced polymer composites are receiving considerable attention as they represent a low-cost green source of raw materials. In most cases, fiber-reinforced polymer composites face harsh environments, such as chloride ions in coastal marine environments or cold regions with salt deicing. The resistance of fiber-reinforced polymers subjected to the above environments is critical for the safe design and application of such composites. This research aims to develop a framework to investigate the durability properties of the lightweight expanded clay basalt fiber polymer reinforced concrete exposed to the NaCl environment. The specified quantity of concrete structural elements wa…

Stiffness and strength of composite truss beam to R.C. column connection in MRFs

2015

Abstract The results of experimental and numerical investigations on the cyclic behavior of composite truss beam to reinforced concrete column connection of moment resisting frames are reported. The beams are constituted by a steel truss and end zone added rebar embedded within a concrete block cast in place, so that, after curing, the steel truss and the added rebar work together with the concrete matrix as reinforcement of the composite beam. Particularly, three specimens of two-span continuous beams were tested under monotonic and cyclic actions as three point bending test. With the goal to investigate about the behavior of the end zone of the beam integrated into a moment resisting fram…

Analysis of a microwave time delay line based on a perturbed uniform fiber Bragg grating operating at constant wavelength

2000

This paper presents the modeling of a new microwave time delay line based on a uniform fiber Bragg grating (FBG) with a section which period has been perturbed. The time delay can be modified by changing the position of the perturbation along the grating. Theoretical results are presented for a 5-cm long uniform grating and optical signal is modulated up to 18 GHz. Experimental setup used magnetic fields to change the period locally along the grating and a 330 ps maximum time delay is shown. Comparison between calculations and measurements show a perfect agreement. Such a delay line offers many advantages for beamforming applications in phased array antennas where the operation at a fixed w…

Performance of Steel Fibrous Reinforced Concrete Corbels Subjected to Vertical and Horizontal Loads

2009

A softened strut-and-tie macromodel able to reproduce the flexural behavior of corbels in plain and fibrous concrete and with the presence of steel bars, including softening of compressed struts and yielding of main and secondary steel bars, is presented in this paper. The main focus of the proposed model is the determination of the load-deflection curves of corbels subjected to the coupled effects of vertical and horizontal forces bearing in mind the influence of the type of concrete (normal or high strength), of the fiber percentage and of the arrangement and percentage of the main and secondary (horizontal stirrup) steel bars. A validation of the proposed model is made therefore with ref…

BIO-Bragg gratings: structured molecular networks for on-fiber bioanalysis

2021

The research on photonic biosensors is a scientific hot topic at the moment, with a significant potential impact on industry and medicine. Label-free, miniaturized, inexpensive and low-loss biosensors are developed based on optical fiber technology. Our approach is based on a Bio-Bragg-Grating (BBG) patterned on the surface of a microfiber. We present the design, fabrication and proof of concept of our device, as well as its multiplexing and tunability perspectives [1] .

Could structural changes in the retinal layers be a new biomarker of mental disorders? A systematic review and thematic synthesis.

2019

It has recently been suggested that alterations of the layers of the retina could be a biomarker of specific mental disorders since they originate in the same embryonic layer as the brain and both are interconnected through the optic nerve. The purpose of this article is to offer a systematic review of the literature and a thematic synthesis on the current state of the alterations of the retina layers identified by optical coherence tomography in patients with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and major depression. For this purpose, we performed a bibliographic search, a systematic review of the studies and a thematic synthesis of the reported findings. Patients with schizophrenia have more a…

Nonlinear mode coupling in a birefringent microstructured fiber tuned by externally applied hydrostatic pressure

2015

We studied the effect of power coupling between two linearly polarized modes, which occurs during nonlinear propagation in an externally tuned birefringent microstructured fiber. We investigated both experimentally and numerically the possibility of measuring hydrostatic pressure by tracking the nonlinear power coupling between the fiber polarization modes. We analyzed the impact of the fiber length exposed to pressure and the input polarization state on the coupling efficiency. We also revealed that the observation of nonlinear power coupling between the polarization modes is limited by linear coupling occurring in the leadthroughs to the pressure chamber. Moreover, we demonstrated that th…

Polarization Modulation Instability in All-Normal Dispersion Microstructured Optical Fibers with Quasi-Continuous 1064 nm Pump

2019

Polarization modulation instability (PMI) is a form of modulation instability that can exist in weakly birefringent optical fibers [1]. Sidebands can be generated by this effect when a polarization mode of the birefringent fiber is excited with an intense optical pump. The polarization state of the sidebands is orthogonal to the polarization of the pump signal. PMI has been observed in microstructured optical fibers (MOFs). PMI was reported in a large-air-filling fraction MOF that was pumped in the normal dispersion regime with visible light [2]. The coherent degradation of femtosecond supercontinuum light generated in all-normal dispersion (ANDi) MOFs due to PMI was recently investigated […
