Career Paths in Institutional Business Elites: Finnish Family Firms from 1762–2010

2015

This article analyzes the career paths of family business executives in institutional business elites in Finland using an empirical database based on a Bourdieusian prosopographical approach. The results indicate that career paths became more complex but shortened in length toward the beginning of the twenty-first century. The early career paths of family executives changed from positions as assistants and salesmen in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to governance, chief executive officer (CEO), and management positions in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Compared with the founder generation, next-generation family members benefited from more rapid institutional business eli…

The Incubation Process for the Creation of Viable Firms: The Case of ARCA Consortium

2013

Purpose of the study. The process of creation of new firms is particularly complex when it starts from very innovative ideas that may be not understood by the stakeholders of the firm. The aim of this study is to demonstrate that academic incubators play a key role for firms’ viability. Methodology. We analyze the effectiveness of the incubation process that takes place in the incubator of Consorzio Arca, by means of a single case study with embedded design. Findings. The effectiveness of the incubation process is demonstrated by the high number of spin-offs that, after incubation, are able to stand alone in the market and to find the consonance with the relevant supra-systems. Age and productivity as determinants of firm survival over the industry life cycle

2017

AbstractThis paper contributes to fill the gap between the literature on the determinants of firm survival and the empirical works on the industry life cycle (ILC). Using a representative sample of Spanish firms with 10 or more employees over the period 1993–2009, the role played by firm age and productivity in firm survival is empirically analysed across three stages of the life cycle of forty-seven 3-digit manufacturing sectors. In the ‘early’ stage of the ILC, firm age is negatively correlated with hazard rates while firm productivity is not. Firm productivity is associated with lower hazard in the ‘mature’ stage of the ILC, when competition is primarily efficiency-driven, while firm age…

Finding evidence on the innovative or positional character in medium sized manufacturing firms

2002

Through an empirically based study on 65 medium sized manufacturing firms corresponding to 12 industrial sectors and located in the Spanish region of Valencia, we seek in this paper to provide enough evidence about the prevalence of positional, static and myopic values or, instead, innovative, dynamic and open minded principles, among the firms under study. Gathered into three groups of sectors, depending on the scope of demand (weak, medium and strong demand sectors), we conclude that the weak and medium demand sectors are still facing remarkable challenges basically connected to technology issues, despite improvement in other variables directly linked to an innovative character.

Enterprise content management: An integrated perspective on information management

2005

Konferansebidrag fra 38th Annual Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences, 2005. HICSS 2005 Enterprise Content Management (ECM) is an emerging concept involving numerous software vendors, consultants, and information management practitioners around increasing market potential. However, there exist yet few academic reports on ECM from the viewpoint of organizational system implementations. This article analyses 58, mainly practitioner-oriented, case narratives of ECM projects and implementations to identify a framework of major issues that require managerial attention in organizations. The main areas covered by the framework are: objectives/impacts sought with ECM, enterprise model…
