Non-viral VEGF(165) gene therapy--magnetofection of acoustically active magnetic lipospheres ('magnetobubbles') increases tissue survival in an overs…
2008
Abstract Adenoviral transduction of the VEGF gene in an oversized skin flap increases flap survival and perfusion. In this study, we investigated the potential of magnetofection of magnetic lipospheres containing VEGF165-cDNA on survival and perfusion of ischemic skin flaps and evaluated the method with respect to the significance of applied magnetic field and ultrasound. We prepared perfluoropropane-filled magnetic lipospheres (‘magnetobubbles’) from Tween60-coated magnetic nanoparticles, Metafectene, soybean-oil and cDNA and studied the effect in an oversized random-pattern-flap model in the rats (n= 46). VEGF-cDNA-magnetobubbles were administered under a magnetic field with simultaneousl…
Incidence and types of complications after ablative oral cancer surgery with primary microvascular free flap reconstruction.
2015
Background: The aims of the study were 1) to evaluate the incidence and types of postoperative complications after ablative oral cancer surgery with primary free flap reconstruction and 2) identify prognostic variables for postoperative complications. Material and Methods: Desired data was retrieved from a computer database at the department of Oral and Maxillofacial Department, Queen Elisabeth hospital Birmingham, United Kingdom, between June 2007 and October 2012. Logistic regression was used to study relationships between preoperative variables and postoperative outcomes. Results: The study population consisted 184 patients, comprising 189 composite resections with reconstruction. Compli…
The face lift SMAS plication flap for reconstruction of large temporofrontal defects: reconstructive surgery meets cosmetic surgery.
2011
Background: Reconstruction of large defects in the temporal region can be performed with skin grafts or pedicled or free flaps. Results are often not optimal because of the patch of a skin graft, lack of availability of local flaps, and distant skin from free flaps. A technique for reconstruction of these defects with local tissue is presented in this article that uses superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS) plication to allow wide advancement of a cervicofacial flap. Methods: Once the defect is outlined, a face-lift–like skin incision is used to raise the flap. The SMAS is plicated with two purse-string sutures that relieve tension on the flap and allow maximal advancement. Thirteen f…
XEN-augmented Baerveldt Implantation for Refractory Childhood Glaucoma: A Retrospective Case Series
2019
Background Tube implants can lead to long-term decompensation of the cornea after decades, in particular in complicated childhood glaucoma, because of a variety of causes including contact between the tube tip and the corneal endothelium. The augmentation of a XEN implant with a Baerveldt (250) tube implant, introduced 2016 by Mermoud et al for refractory glaucoma in adult patients, may reduce this risk in children. In our retrospective study, we report on the XEN-augmented Baerveldt (250) tube implant in children. Patients and methods Ten consecutive patients with refractory childhood glaucoma who underwent XEN-augmented Baerveldt implantation by a single surgeon (F.G.) between January 201…
Freestyle-Like V-Y Flaps of the Eyebrow: A New Outlook and Indication of an Historical Technique
2013
The eyebrow region is of utmost importance for facial movement, symmetry, and the overall cosmetic appearance of the face. Trauma or tumor resection often leave scars that may dislocate the eyebrow producing an alteration both in static symmetry of the face and in the dynamic expressivity. The authors present a technique for eyebrow’s defects repair using the remaining eyebrow advancement by means of a “freestyle-like” V-Y flap. In the past two years a total of eight consecutive patients underwent excision of skin lesions in the superciliary region and immediate reconstruction with this technique. On histology, six patients were affected from basal cell carcinomas, one from squamous cell ca…

Advancement Perforator Cheek Flap for Aesthetic One-Stage Reconstruction of Postoncological Extended Split-Thickness Defects of the Nasal Sidewall
2013
Aesthetic reconstruction of soft tissue nasal sidewall loss has an important influence on the appearance of the nose. The unique character of this subunit and the complex relationships with a number of different facial or nasal subunits make the excision of large tumors difficult to manage. Numerous techniques are described in the literature, but a primary reconstruction with a final good result is not often possible. The authors develop an advancement cheek flap for an aesthetic one-stage reconstruction of postoncological extended nasal sidewall defects. Between January 2009 and July 2012, 16 patients (mean age, 63.3 yr) underwent excision of skin tumors of nasal sidewall and immediate rec…
Surgical treatment of pharyngostomes in irradiated patients. Our experience with musculocutaneous pectoralis major flap and hyperbaric oxygen therapy

Fistulectomy and sphincteric reconstruction for complex cryptoglandular fistulas
2009
Objective Complex anal fistulas (CFs) are difficult to treat. Endoanal advancement flap (EAF) is one of the standard treatment options for such clinical conditions. Immediate sphincter repair after fistulectomy (ISR) is not commonly performed because of the fear of causing postoperative incontinence. The objective of this study was to compare the results of both techniques. Method We retrospectively analysed a prospectively entered database composed of 146 patients (112 M; 34 F), undergoing operations for CF of cryptoglandular origin. The patients were divided in two groups: Group A: (EAF); n = 71 patients; Group B: (ISR); n = 75 patients. Results Forty-two fistulas (28.7%) were recurren…
Post laryngectomy speech rehabilitation outcome in elderly patients
2013
The aim of our work has been to evaluate the different options of tracheoesophageal voice rehabilitation in over 70-year-old patients, who had undergone laryngectomy, assessing advantages and drawbacks of this method of vocal recovery. A retrospective study has been carried out. This has included 40 subjects, all aged more than 70 years old, who have been referred to tracheoesophageal voice rehabilitation. It has been realized a phonatory fistula between trachea and esophagus with prosthesis positioning by means of a primary puncture in 18 cases and it has been realized a secondary puncture in 22 cases. The results gathered in these patients were compared with data obtained from a group mad…
