Effects of Boulder Arrangement on Flow Resistance Due to Macro-Scale Bed Roughness
2023
Flow resistance in gravel-bed channels is not only affected by the shape and size of the roughness elements, but also by their arrangement on the channel bed surface (position to flow streamlines, spacing between elements, and their protrusion from the channel bed). Many investigations proved that open channel flow resistance can be obtained by integrating the power velocity profile. For a macro-scale roughness condition, this study aims to investigate the effect of different boulder arrangements on flow resistance. First, for each arrangement, the equation relating Γ function of the power velocity profile, the Froude number, and the channel slope was calibrated using available measur…
The relationship between the levels of salivary cortisol and the presence of xerostomia in menopausal women. A preliminary study.
2006
Factors affecting short- and long-term survival of patients with acute coronary syndrome treated invasively using intravascular ultrasound and fracti…
2023
Background: Intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) and fractional flow reserve (FFR) are invasive procedures increasingly used in acute coronary syndrome (ACS). Aims: The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of IVUS and FFR use in patients with ACS in Poland and to assess the safety of these procedures, as well as their impact on short- and long-term survival. Methods and results: The retrospective study included 103849 patients enrolled in the PL-ACS registry in 2017-2020. IVUS was performed in 1,727 patients, FFR in 1,537 patients, both procedures in 37 patients. The frequency of performing FFR in ACS over the years increased from 1.3% to 1.8% (p <0.0001) and IVUS from 1.7% to 2.3% (…
Whole-genome analysis reveals contrasting relationships among nuclear and mitochondrial genomes between three sympatric bat species
2023
Understanding mechanisms involved in speciation can be challenging, especially when hybridization or introgression blurs species boundaries. In bats resolving relationships of some closely related groups has proven difficult due subtle interspecific variation both in morphometrics and molecular datasets. The endemic South American Histiotus bats, currently considered a sub-genus of Eptesicus, harbor unresolved phylogenetic relationships and of those is a trio consisting of two closely related species: Eptesicus (Histiotus) macrotus and E. (H.) montanus, and their relationship with a third, E. (H.) magellanicus. The three sympatric species bear marked resemblance to each other, but can be di…
Is ram-pressure stripping an efficient mechanism to remove gas in galaxies?
2017
We study how the gas in a sample of galaxies (M* > 10e9 Msun) in clusters, obtained in a cosmological simulation, is affected by the interaction with the intra-cluster medium (ICM). The dynamical state of each elemental parcel of gas is studied using the total energy. At z ~ 2, the galaxies in the simulation are evenly distributed within clusters, moving later on towards more central locations. In this process, gas from the ICM is accreted and mixed with the gas in the galactic halo. Simultaneously, the interaction with the environment removes part of the gas. A characteristic stellar mass around M* ~ 10e10 Msun appears as a threshold marking two differentiated behaviours. Below this mas…
Density flow over networks: A mean-field game theoretic approach
2014
A distributed routing control algorithm for dynamic networks has recently been presented in the literature. The networks were modeled using time evolution of density at network edges and the routing control algorithm allowed edge density to converge to a Wardrop equilibrium, which was characterized by an equal traffic density on all used paths. We borrow the idea and rearrange the density model to recast the problem within the framework of mean-field games. The contribution of this paper is three-fold. First, we provide a mean-field game formulation of the problem at hand. Second, we illustrate an extended state space solution approach. Third, we study the stochastic case where the density …
Population genetic structure of aposematic alpine wood tiger moths (Parasemia plantaginis)
2012
Alpine landscape with natural fragmentation restricts gene flow among populations and causes spatio-genetic structuring (high genetic differentiation) in species living there. Consequently, alpine habitat fragmentation and dispersal barriers should make isolated populations such as wood tiger moth (Parasemia plantaginis) populations prone to lose genetic diversity by local adaptation and fixation of fittest phenotype in each local population. This species is also known to be aposematic. Yellow colour on the males’ hind wings in wood tiger moth is presumed to work more efficiently against visual hunting predators due to increased conspicuousness. In addition, in field experiments with wood t…
SIRM–SIC appropriateness criteria for the use of Cardiac Computed Tomography. Part 1: Congenital heart diseases, primary prevention, risk assessment …
2021
AbstractIn the past 20 years, Cardiac Computed Tomography (CCT) has become a pivotal technique for the noninvasive diagnostic work-up of coronary and cardiac diseases. Continuous technical and methodological improvements, combined with fast growing scientific evidence, have progressively expanded the clinical role of CCT. Recent large multicenter randomized clinical trials documented the high prognostic value of CCT and its capability to increase the cost-effectiveness of the management of patients with suspected CAD. In the meantime, CCT, initially perceived as a simple non-invasive technique for studying coronary anatomy, has transformed into a multiparametric “one-stop-shop” approach abl…
Adaptation to a seasonally varying environment: a strong latitudinal cline in reproductive diapause combined with high gene flow in Drosophila montan…
2011
Adaptation to seasonal changes in the northern hemisphere includes an ability to predict the forthcoming cold season from gradual changes in environmental cues early enough to prepare for the harsh winter conditions. The magnitude and speed of changes in these cues vary between the latitudes, which induces strong selection pressures for local adaptation. We studied adaptation to seasonal changes in Drosophila montana, a northern maltfly, by defining the photoperiodic conditions leading to adult reproductive diapause along a latitudinal cline in Finland and by measuring genetic differentiation and the amount of gene flow between the sampling sites with microsatellites. Our data revealed a cl…
Climate signatures on decadal to interdecadal time scales as obtained from mollusk shells (Arctica islandica) from Iceland
2013
Abstract Pronounced decadal climate oscillations are detected in a multi-centennial record based on shell growth rates of the marine bivalve mollusk, Arctica islandica, from Iceland. The corresponding analysis of patterns in sea level pressure and temperature exhibit large-scale teleconnections with North Atlantic climate quantities. We find that the record projects onto blocking situations in the northern North Atlantic. The associated circulation shows a low-pressure signature over Greenland and the Labrador Sea and a high-pressure system over Western Europe associated with northeasterly flow towards Iceland and weakening in the westerly zonal flow over Europe. It can be speculated that s…
