Effects of high-impact training and detraining on femoral neck structure in premenopausal women: a hip structural analysis of an 18-month randomized …
2013
Purpose: This study evaluated the training effects of an 18-month exercise intervention and subsequent 3.5-year follow-up on femoral neck structure in premenopausal women. Methods: Of 98 women who participated in this randomized controlled study, 84 (39 trainees and 45 controls) completed the 18-month intervention. At both 18 months and 3.5 years, dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry data on 22 trainees and 22 control participants (ages 35–45 y) were available for hip structural analysis. The section modulus (Z), cross-sectional area (CSA), and subperiosteal width at the femoral neck were analyzed. Lower-leg explosive power and estimated maximal oxygen uptake (Vo2max) were assessed by vertical…
Outcome comparison among working adults with centralizing low back pain: Secondary analysis of a randomized controlled trial with 1-year follow-up
2009
Our purpose was to examine if adults with centralizing pain might achieve better treatment outcomes when treated by individually designed therapy than “given advice only to stay active”. One hundred and nineteen working adults with first or a recurrent episode of low back pain (LBP) were classified as centralizers and were randomly allocated to orthopaedic manual therapy (OMT; n=42), the McKenzie (n=48) or “advice only to stay active” (Advice-only; n=29) groups. Back and leg pain were assessed by the visual analogue scale, disability with the Roland–Morris questionnaire and functional status with an activities of daily living (ADL) index. Immediately after the treatment period, LBP decrease…

Infliximab in severe ulcerative colitis: short-term results of different infusion regimens and long-term follow-up
2007
Background Severe ulcerative colitis is a life-threatening disorder, despite i.v. glucocorticoids treatment. Infliximab has been proposed as a safe rescue therapy. Aim To evaluate short- and long-term effectiveness and safety of infliximab in severe refractory ulcerative colitis. Methods Eighty-three patients with severe ulcerative colitis (i.v. glucocorticoids treatment-refractory) were treated with infliximab in 10 Italian Gastroenterology Units. Patients underwent one or more infusions according to the choice of treating physicians. Short-term outcome was colectomy/death 2 months after the first infusion. Long-term outcome was survival free from colectomy. Safety data were recorded. Resu…
Pulmonary hypertension and right ventricular dysfunction in heart failure: prognosis and 15‐year prospective longitudinal trajectories in survivors
2020
Aims Systolic pulmonary artery pressure (SPAP), tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (TAPSE), and TAPSE/SPAP ratio trajectories are not fully characterized in chronic heart failure (HF). We assessed very long-term longitudinal SPAP, TAPSE and TAPSE/SPAP trajectories in HF patients, and their dynamic changes in outcomes. Methods and results Prospective, consecutive, observational registry of real-life HF patients, performing echocardiography studies at baseline and according to a prospectively structured schedule after 1 year, and then every 2 years, up to 15 years. Pulmonary hypertension (PH) was defined as SPAP ≥40 mmHg; right ventricular dysfunction (RVD) was defined at TAPSE ≤16 mm…

Purpose: During the first part of the 20th century, Ra-226 was the most used radionuclide for brachytherapy. Retrospective accurate dosimetry, coupled with patient follow up, is important for advan ...
Influence of childhood adversities and defense styles on the 1-year follow-up of psychosomatic- psychotherapeutic inpatient treatment
2005
Abstract The current study explores the connection between reported sexual abuse and physical maltreatment during childhood and immature defense styles as affecting the 1-year follow-up of inpatients who had undergone psychodynamic group therapy. Early traumatization was assessed using a structured patient interview and the defense styles by means of the questionnaire on defense styles. Reduction in psychological distress and improvement in health-related quality of life formed the parameters against which success of treatment was measured. At the 1-year follow-up, the entire sample showed a distinct improvement. The effect sizes for health-related quality of life ranged from 0.82 to 1.21, …
