Post-Newtonian constraints onf(R)cosmologies in metric and Palatini formalism

2005

We compute the complete post-Newtonian limit of both the metric and Palatini formulations of $f(R)$ gravities using a scalar-tensor representation. By comparing the predictions of these theories with laboratory and solar system experiments, we find a set of inequalities that any lagrangian $f(R)$ must satisfy. The constraints imposed by those inequalities allow us to find explicit bounds to the possible nonlinear terms of the lagrangian. We conclude that in both formalisms the lagrangian $f(R)$ must be almost linear in $R$ and that corrections that grow at low curvatures are incompatible with observations. This result shows that modifications of gravity at very low cosmic densities cannot b…

Yang-Mills two-point functions in linear covariant gauges

2015

In this work we use two different but complementary approaches in order to study the ghost propagator of a pure SU(3) Yang-Mills theory quantized in the linear covariant gauges, focusing on its dependence on the gauge-fixing parameter $\xi$ in the deep infrared. In particular, we first solve the Schwinger-Dyson equation that governs the dynamics of the ghost propagator, using a set of simplifying approximations, and under the crucial assumption that the gluon propagators for $\xi>0$ are infrared finite, as is the case in the Landau gauge $(\xi=0)$. Then we appeal to the Nielsen identities, and express the derivative of the ghost propagator with respect to $\xi$ in terms of certain auxiliary…

Ghosts in metric-affine higher order curvature gravity

2019

We disprove the widespread belief that higher order curvature theories of gravity in the metric-affine formalism are generally ghost-free. This is clarified by considering a sub-class of theories constructed only with the Ricci tensor and showing that the non-projectively invariant sector propagates ghost-like degrees of freedom. We also explain how these pathologies can be avoided either by imposing a projective symmetry or additional constraints in the gravity sector. Our results put forward that higher order curvature gravity theories generally remain pathological in the metric-affine (and hybrid) formalisms and highlight the key importance of the projective symmetry and/or additional co…

Maxwell symmetries and some applications

2012

The Maxwell algebra is the result of enlarging the Poincar\'{e} algebra by six additional tensorial Abelian generators that make the fourmomenta non-commutative. We present a local gauge theory based on the Maxwell algebra with vierbein, spin connection and six additional geometric Abelian gauge fields. We apply this geometric framework to the construction of Maxwell gravity, which is described by the Einstein action plus a generalized cosmological term. We mention a Friedman-Robertson-Walker cosmological approximation to the Maxwell gravity field equations, with two scalar fields obtained from the additional gauge fields. Finally, we outline further developments of the Maxwell symmetries f…

Weak Lensing Observables in the Halo Model

2011

The halo model (HM) describes the inhomogeneous universe as a collection of halos. The full nonlinear power spectrum of the universe is well approximated by the HM, whose prediction can be easily computed without lengthy numerical simulations. This makes the HM a useful tool in cosmology. Here we explore the lensing properties of the HM by use of the stochastic gravitational lensing (sGL) method. We obtain for the case of point sources exact and simple integral expressions for the expected value and variance of the lensing convergence, which encode detailed information about the internal halo properties. In particular a wide array of observational biases can be easily incorporated and the d…

Accurate modeling of weak lensing with the stochastic gravitational lensing method

2011

We revise and extend the stochastic gravitational lensing method (the sGL method) first introduced by Kainulainen and Marra [Phys. Rev. D 80, 123020 (2009)]. Here we include a realistic halo-mass function and density profiles to model the distribution of mass between and within galaxies, galaxy groups, and galaxy clusters. We also introduce a modeling of the filamentary large-scale structures and a method to embed halos into these structures. We show that the sGL method naturally reproduces the weak lensing results for the Millennium simulation. The strength of the sGL method is that a numerical code based on it can compute the lensing probability distribution function (PDF) for a given inh…

Integral field spectroscopy of the gravitational lens HE1104-1805

2004

We present integral field spectroscopy of the double imaged quasar HE1104-1805 taken with the optical fiber system INTEGRAL-WYFFOS at theWHT telescope. From the spectra of the two components we have measured the continuum and line emission ratios, finding an offset between them that can be related to microlensing. (© 2004 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. New Accurate Fit of an Extended Set of Saturation Data for the ν3 Band of SF6: Comparison of Hamiltonians in the Spherical and Cubic Tensor Formalisms

2000

An extended set of 321 frequencies of vibration-rotation lines of the nu(3) band of SF(6) has been measured by saturation spectroscopy using various isotopic species of CO(2). A least-squares fit of these data has been performed using an effective Hamiltonian written either with a spherical tensor or with a cubic tensor formalism. We have derived correspondence formulas between the parameters in the two approaches and checked that both formalisms give the same results up to the seventh order. Corrected parameters are given for the fit with a fifth-order Hamiltonian. An accurate representation of the band is obtained at the tenth order (standard deviation approximately 12 kHz) with a remarka…
