Results from DROXO. II. - [Ne II] and X-ray emission from Rho Ophiuchi young stellar objects

2009

The infrared [Ne II] and [Ne III] fine structure lines at 12.81um and 15.55um are predicted to trace the circumstellar disk gas subject to X-ray heating and ionization. We investigate the origin of these lines by comparing observations with models of X-ray irradiated disks and by searching for empirical correlations between the line luminosities and stellar and circumstellar parameters. We measure neon line fluxes and X-ray luminosities for 28 young stellar objects in the Rho Ophiuchi star formation region for which good quality infrared spectra and X-ray data have been obtained, the former with the Spitzer IRS and the latter with the Deep Rho Ophiuchi XMM-Newton Observation. We detect the …

The Star Population of Young Open Clusters: A Photometric and Spectroscopic Study

2003

I have determined physical parameters (interstellar reddening, distance, and age) for three young open clusters: h Persei, x Persei, and NGC 1893. I have studied their massive star populations and their formation epochs. I present photometric data for 350 stars in the double open cluster h and x Persei. For both clusters, the distance moduli and reddening are determined to be the same: V0 M p V and E(b y) p . However, the ages for 11.6 0.2 0.42 0.2 the clusters are different. Most stars in h Persei follow the isochrone, although some of the massive stars seem log t p 7.3 younger. By contrast, the stars in x Persei better fit isochrones for (A. Marco & G. Bernabeu 2001, A&A, log t p 7.10–7.1…

Modeling the long duration rise phase of a flare detected on the M star TWA 11 B

2009

We present preliminary results from the analysis of a long duration flare that was observed in a serendipitous XMM-Newton detection of the M star CD-39 7717 B (TWA 11 B), member of the young stellar association TW Hya. Only the rise phase (with a duration of ~35 ks) and possibly the flare peak are present in the light-curve. The decay phase was not monitored. The fluorescent iron emission line at 6.4 keV was observed during this event. As far as we are concerned, since TWA 11 B seems to have no disk, this is only the third detection of Fe photospheric fluorescence. During the flare, the X-ray flux increased a factor of ~4. Taking the light curve and the evolution of the hardness ratio into …

Relaxation in a phase-separating two-dimensional active matter system with alignment interaction

2020

Via computer simulations we study kinetics of pattern formation in a two-dimensional active matter system. Self-propulsion in our model is incorporated via the Vicsek-like activity, i.e., particles have the tendency of aligning their velocities with the average directions of motion of their neighbors. In addition to this dynamic or active interaction, there exists passive inter-particle interaction in the model for which we have chosen the standard Lennard-Jones form. Following quenches of homogeneous configurations to a point deep inside the region of coexistence between high and low density phases, as the systems exhibit formation and evolution of particle-rich clusters, we investigate pr…

Super-critical and sub-critical bifurcations in a reaction-diffusion Schnakenberg model with linear cross-diffusion

2016

In this paper the Turing pattern formation mechanism of a two components reaction-diffusion system modeling the Schnakenberg chemical reaction is considered. In Ref. (Madzavamuse et al., J Math Biol 70(4):709–743, 2015) it was shown how the presence of linear cross-diffusion terms favors the destabilization of the constant steady state. We perform the weakly nonlinear multiple scales analysis to derive the equations for the amplitude of the Turing patterns and to show how the cross-diffusion coefficients influence the occurrence of super-critical or sub-critical bifurcations. We present a numerical exploration of far from equilibrium regimes and prove the existence of multistable stationary…

Young ages and other intriguing properties of massive compact galaxies in the local Universe

2012

We characterize the kinematics, morphology, stellar populations and star formation histories of a sample of massive compact galaxies in the nearby Universe, which might provide a closer look at the nature of their high-redshift (z  >rsim 1.0) massive counterparts. We find that nearby compact massive objects show elongated morphologies and are fast rotators. New high-quality long-slit spectra show that they have young mean luminosity-weighted ages (2 Gyr) and metallicities solar or above ([Z/H] >rsim 0.0). No significant stellar population gradients are found. The analysis of their star formation histories suggests that these objects have experienced recently enormous bursts which, in some c…

Sterile neutrinos with secret interactions—lasting friendship with cosmology

2015

Sterile neutrinos with mass ~1 eV and order 10% mixing with active neutrinos have been proposed as a solution to anomalies in neutrino oscillation data, but are tightly constrained by cosmological limits. It was recently shown that these constraints are avoided if sterile neutrinos couple to a new MeV-scale gauge boson A'. However, even this scenario is restricted by structure formation constraints when A'-mediated collisional processes lead to efficient active-to-sterile neutrino conversion after neutrinos have decoupled. In view of this, we reevaluate in this paper the viability of sterile neutrinos with such "secret" interactions. We carefully dissect their evolution in the early Univers…

Noise effects on gap wave propagation in a nonlinear discrete LC transmission line

2007

International audience; We report here the results of numerical investigation of noise effects on the propagation in a nonlinear waveguide modeled by a discrete electrical line. Considering a periodic signal of frequency exceeding the natural cutoff frequency of this system, we show that noise can be used to trigger soliton generation in the medium. Besides the classical stochastic resonance signature exhibited by each oscillator of the network, our simulation results reveal in particular that the signal-to-noise ratio remains almost constant in the whole network for an appropriate amount of noise. This interesting feature insures for the generated solitons a quality preserved propagation a…

Magnetohydrodynamic experiments on cosmic magnetic fields

2008

It is widely known that cosmic magnetic fields, i.e. the fields of planets, stars, and galaxies, are produced by the hydromagnetic dynamo effect in moving electrically conducting fluids. It is less well known that cosmic magnetic fields play also an active role in cosmic structure formation by enabling outward transport of angular momentum in accretion disks via the magnetorotational instability (MRI). Considerable theoretical and computational progress has been made in understanding both processes. In addition to this, the last ten years have seen tremendous efforts in studying both effects in liquid metal experiments. In 1999, magnetic field self-excitation was observed in the large scale…

A global descriptor of spatial pattern interaction in the galaxy distribution

1997

We present the function J as a morphological descriptor for point patterns formed by the distribution of galaxies in the Universe. This function was recently introduced in the field of spatial statistics, and is based on the nearest neighbor distribution and the void probability function. The J descriptor allows to distinguish clustered (i.e. correlated) from ``regular'' (i.e. anti-correlated) point distributions. We outline the theoretical foundations of the method, perform tests with a Matern cluster process as an idealised model of galaxy clustering, and apply the descriptor to galaxies and loose groups in the Perseus-Pisces Survey. A comparison with mock-samples extracted from a mixed d…
