Wavelength conversion and temporal compression of a pulse train using a dispersion oscillating fiber

International audience; We demonstrate the generation of a picosecond pulse train taking advantage of the cross gain occurring in a dispersion oscillating fibre. The resulting frequency-converted signal is detuned by more than 20 nm from the pump and can be temporally compressed by a factor 2 compared to the input sinusoidal pump wave.

Environmental effects on the natural vibrations of nanoplatelets: a high pressure study.

International audience; Resonant acoustic modes from ultrathin CdS colloidal nanoplatelets (NPLs) are probed under high pressure using low frequency Raman spectroscopy. In particular we focus on the characterization of the recently evidenced mass load effect that is responsible for a significant downshift of the NPL breathing frequency due to the inert mass of organic ligands. We show that a key parameter in the observation of the mass effect is whether the surrounding medium is able to support THz acoustic wave propagation, at a frequency close to that of the inorganic vibrating core. Swarming of micron-sized hematite cubes in a rotating magnetic field -- Experiments

Energy input by under-field rotation of particles drives the systems to emergent non-equilibrium states. Here we investigate the suspension of rotating magnetic cubes. Micron-sized hematite cubes are synthesized and observed microscopically. When exposed to a rotating magnetic field, they form rotating swarms that interact with each other like liquid droplets. We describe the swarming behaviour and its limits and characterize swarm size and angular velocity dependence on magnetic field strength and frequency. Reduced herbicide use does not increase crop yield loss if it is compensated by alternative preventive and curative measures

Herbicide use must be reduced because of environmental and health issues. This raises the question of whether weeds and the resulting crop yield loss will increase. Previous studies analysing relationships between herbicide use intensity, weeds and yield loss suffer from methodological shortcomings in terms of weed flora and farm diversity as well as temporal scales. Here, we collected data on 272 arable cropping systems from one Spanish and six French regions, from farm surveys, the Biovigilance-Flore network, expert opinion, cropping system trials, crop advisors and scientists. Chapter 68 - Identification of Key Gin Aroma Compounds: An Integrative Approach Based on an Original Selection Procedure

International audience; Potential impact aroma compounds of gin have been identified using Gas Chromatogry Olfactometry Mass-Spectrometry (GC-O-MS). In order to select some of them for a recombination study, we developed a specific procedure. Instead of only choosing the compounds on criteria such as their odor quality or their odor activity values, we also used physico-chemical parameters and information on their botanical origin. Data were organized in blocks homogeneous in terms of parameter type. Different statistical treatments were used in order to classify the compounds either by analyzing the parameters altogether or separately block by block.

Managing pests while reducing pesticide use is a major challenge to improve cropping system sustainability. Crop diversification appears as a promising tool to promote ecosystem services such as pest control (Tamburini et al., 2020; Beillouin et al., 2021). Lechenet et al. Various examples of these materials can be found in engineering and in everyday life including bio-based materials. Acoustical properties of air-saturated porous material with periodically distributed dead-end pores

International audience; A theoretical and numerical study of the sound propagation in air-saturated porous media with straight main pores bearing lateral cavities (dead-ends) is presented. The lateral cavities are located at " nodes " periodically spaced along each main pore. The effect of periodicity in the distribution of the lateral cavities is studied, and the low frequency limit valid for the closely spaced dead-ends is considered separately. It is shown that the absorption coefficient and transmission loss are influenced by the viscous and thermal losses in the main pores as well as their perforation rate. Frequency Stability Measurement of Cryogenic Sapphire Oscillators with a Multichannel Tracking DDS and the Two-Sample Covariance

This article shows the first measurement of three 100 MHz signals exhibiting fluctuations from 2E-16 to parts in 1E-15 for integration time tau between 1 s and 1 day. Such stable signals are provided by three Cryogenic Sapphire Oscillators (CSOs) operating at about 10 GHz, also delivering the 100 MHz output via a dedicated synthesizer. The measurement is made possible by a 6-channel Tracking DDS (TDDS) and the two-sample covariance tool, used to estimate the Allan variance. The use of two TDDS channels per CSO enables high rejection of the instrument background noise.
