Oxide-based nanomaterials for fuel cell catalysis:the interplay between supported single Pt atoms and particles

2017

The concept of single atom catalysis offers maximum noble metal efficiency for the development of low-cost catalytic materials. Among possible applications are catalytic materials for proton exchange membrane fuel cells. In the present review, recent efforts towards the fabrication of single atom catalysts on nanostructured ceria and their reactivity are discussed in the prospect of their employment as anode catalysts. The remarkable performance and the durability of the ceria-based anode catalysts with ultra-low Pt loading result from the interplay between two states associated with supported atomically dispersed Pt and sub-nanometer Pt particles. The occurrence of these two states is a co…

Recent Progress in the Development of Composite Membranes Based on Polybenzimidazole for High Temperature Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) Fuel Cell Ap…

2020

[EN] The rapid increasing of the population in combination with the emergence of new energy-consuming technologies has risen worldwide total energy consumption towards unprecedent values. Furthermore, fossil fuel reserves are running out very quickly and the polluting greenhouse gases emitted during their utilization need to be reduced. In this scenario, a few alternative energy sources have been proposed and, among these, proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells are promising. Recently, polybenzimidazole-based polymers, featuring high chemical and thermal stability, in combination with fillers that can regulate the proton mobility, have attracted tremendous attention for their roles as PE…

Diamond Films as Support for Electrochemical Systems for Energy Conversion and Storage

2019

Many efforts have been dedicated to develop and study different catalysts supported materials for energy storage and conversion. Polymer electrolyte membranes (PEM) and capacitors have been topics of special interest for the scientific community, then, the research to find excellent catalyst-supports has constantly increased. The use of conductive diamond films has been proposed due to their mechanical and chemical stability properties. In this context, the application of BDD-catalyst surfaces for PEM fuel cells as well as the production of electrochemical capacitors using BDD materials have been summarized and discussed in this chapter.

Impact of Ir modification on the durability of FeNC catalysts under start-up and shutdown cycle conditions

2022

A common problem associated with FeNC catalysts is their poor stability dominated by the carbon oxidation reaction (COR). In this work, the feasibility of stabilizing FeNC catalysts with small quantities of Ir was explored. With iridium being present, instead of COR the oxygen evolution reaction should be favored. The impact on structure and morphology was investigated by 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The catalytic activity and durability for the oxygen reduction reaction was evaluated by rotating ring disc electrode experiments and accelerated stress tests mimicking the start-up and shutdown cycle (SS…

Ab initio thermodynamic study of (Ba,Sr)(Co,Fe)O3 perovskite solid solutions for fuel cell applications

2013

(Ba,Sr)(Co,Fe)O3 (BSCF) perovskite solid solutions are promising materials for solid oxide fuel cell cathodes and oxygen permeation membranes. Cathode performance strongly depends on the morphology of these materials remaining as a single phase or two-phase mixture. Combining ab initio calculations of the atomic and electronic structure of different supercells with thermodynamics of solid solutions, we have constructed and discussed phase diagrams of several important BSCF chemical compositions. It is demonstrated that in BSC cobaltite solid solution the spinodal decomposition may occur already at relatively low temperatures, while ferrite (BSF and SCF) solid solutions decompose at relative…

Characterisation of scheelite LaW0.16Nb0.84O4.08 ion conductor by combined synchrotron techniques: Structure, W oxidation state and interdiffusion

2021

Abstract Scheelite-type materials such as LaNbO4 are increasingly attracting attention as a possible alternative to the most common fluorite and perovskite structure as ion conductors. However, they are much less used and investigated. The introduction of tungsten in lanthanum orthoniobate leads to conduction properties that are compatible with oxygen ion conductivity. In this paper, we studied the effect of the introduction of tungsten in the LaNbO4 structure. High resolution X-ray diffraction showed that in LaNb1-xWxO4+x/2 with x = 0.16 the monoclinic distortion is largely suppressed and the tetragonal phase is predominant at room temperature. By XANES/EXAFS we proved that tungsten is in …

Ionic Liquid Composite Polybenzimidazol Membranes for High Temperature PEMFC Applications

2019

A series of proton exchange membranes based on polybenzimidazole (PBI) were prepared using the low cost ionic liquids (ILs) derived from 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium (BMIM) bearing different anions as conductive fillers in the polymeric matrix with the aim of enhancing the proton conductivity of PBI membranes. The composite membranes prepared by casting method (containing 5 wt. % of IL) exhibited good thermal, dimensional, mechanical, and oxidative stability for fuel cell applications. The effects of anion, temperature on the proton conductivity of phosphoric acid-doped membranes were systematically investigated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The PBI composite membranes containin…

Performance analysis of single cell solid oxide fuel cells

2017

Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) are a class of fuel cells operating on high temperatures which have the potential to become one of the efficient and cost effective system for direct conversion of a wide variety of fuels to electricity. For proper operation of SOFCs, evaluation of cell stability and optimization of fuel utilization is of paramount importance. In this paper, we have performed experiments to obtain current-voltage (I–V) characteristics by using three different Hydrogen (H 2 ) flow rates(100 ml/min, 150 ml/min and 200 ml/min). Furthermore, we perform oxidation and reduction (redox) cycles to determine how many redox cycles a SOFC can withstand without cracking the cell which we …

Study and design of a controlled oscillator for an embedded system to measure the complex impedance of PEM fuel cell »

2017

We present in this paper the study and the design of a voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) for an embedded system to diagnose the PEM fuel cell. Some problems related to fuel cells used in the electric vehicle field are the management of its efficiency and the lifetime of its membranes. To do this, the diagnosis using measuring the complex impedance is an important phase. It is based on the injection of a perturbation signal at the output of the PEM fuel cell, then we observe its behavior by measuring its impedance. The used measurement method is the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) using the load modulation technique, which is implemented in an embedded measurement system based…
