When people in close relationships are not prepared to listen to emotional disclosures

2007

The following article comprises a presentation of  research carried out on a group of 268 adults. The survey aimed at finding answers to questions posed about the meditative role played by social constraints in the relationship between shyness and certain aspects of emotional and social functioning. The results indicate that social constraints are a destructive factor in the everyday functioning of those facing everyday problems. Many shy people experience social constraints - people in close relationships: family, relatives, and friends react inadequately and negatively, demonstrating a lack of empathy, thus discouraging people who are shy from expressing their personal thoughts and emotio…

From Complement to Motor: The Changing Role of Leisure and Tourism in Local Development Strategies. The Case of the Recovery and Valorisation of Cult…

2012

In the Fordist society, the productive activity focused development strategies, considering the role of leisure and tourism as “complementary” productive activities. The consolidation of post-productivism since the decade of 1990s has caused profound changes in individual and collective values and priorities. These have seen the introduction of a radically different conception about the role of leisure and tourism in the vital programming and, consequently, in the strategies of companies, organisations and governments. This paper provides a discussion of the principles of local development and the, more and more, central function of leisure and tourism in regional development strategies, th…

Reconnoitering the Therapeutic Role of Curcumin in Disease Prevention and Treatment: Lessons Learnt and Future Directions

2022

Turmeric is a plant with a very long history of medicinal use across different cultures. Curcumin is the active part of turmeric, which has exhibited various beneficial physiological and pharmacological effects. This review aims to critically appraise the corpus of literature associated with the above pharmacological properties of curcumin, with a specific focus on antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticancer and antimicrobial properties. We have also reviewed the different extraction strategies currently in practice, highlighting the strengths and drawbacks of each technique. Further, our review also summarizes the clinical trials that have been conducted with curcumin, which will allow the …

Guaranteed Error Bounds for Conforming Approximations of a Maxwell Type Problem

2009

This paper is concerned with computable error estimates for approximations to a boundary-value problem $$\mathrm{curl}\ {\mu }^{-1}\mathrm{curl}\ u + {\kappa }^{2}u = j\quad \textrm{ in }\Omega ,$$ where μ > 0 and κ are bounded functions. We derive a posteriori error estimates valid for any conforming approximations of the considered problems. For this purpose, we apply a new approach that is based on certain transformations of the basic integral identity. The consistency of the derived a posteriori error estimates is proved and the corresponding computational strategies are discussed.

A WAVELET OPERATOR ON THE INTERVAL IN SOLVING MAXWELL'S EQUATIONS

2011

In this paper, a differential wavelet-based operator defined on an interval is presented and used in evaluating the electromagnetic field described by Maxwell's curl equations, in time domain. The wavelet operator has been generated by using Daubechies wavelets with boundary functions. A spatial differential scheme has been performed and it has been applied in studying electromagnetic phenomena in a lossless medium. The proposed approach has been successfully tested on a bounded axial-symmetric cylindrical domain.

Characterization of ellipsoids through an overdetermined boundary value problem of Monge–Ampère type

2014

Abstract The study of the optimal constant in an Hessian-type Sobolev inequality leads to a fully nonlinear boundary value problem, overdetermined with non-standard boundary conditions. We show that all the solutions have ellipsoidal symmetry. In the proof we use the maximum principle applied to a suitable auxiliary function in conjunction with an entropy estimate from affine curvature flow.

Copper-Assisted Hemiacetal Synthesis: A Cu II Chain Obtained by a One-Step in situ Reaction of Picolinaldehyde

2014

International audience; The 1D polymer complex [Cu2(L)2(SCN)2]n (1 ) has been synthesised in a one‐step in situ reaction of picolinaldehyde with sodium thiocyanate. The complex 1 was characterised by FTIR spectroscopy, UV/Vis spectrophotometry and elemental analysis. The crystal structure of complex 1 shows that chains of dimer complexes are formed with tetra‐ and pentacoordinate copper centres alternately linked by one thiocyanato and two alkoxido bridges. Variable‐temperature magnetic measurements showed a strong antiferromagnetic interaction between the copper centres within the dimer mediated by the two alkoxido bridges with a J value of –374 cm–1, which is in agreement with the DFT‐cal…

Pyrazolium- and 1,2-Cyclopentadiene-Based Ligands as σ-Donors: a Theoretical Study of Electronic Structure and Bonding

2012

A high-level theoretical investigation of 1,2-cyclopentadiene (4) was performed using density functional theory and wave function methods. The results reveal that, in contrast to earlier assumptions, the ground state of this ephemeral “allene” is carbene-like with a small diradical component. Furthermore, the electronic structure and chemistry of 4 are found to parallel that of 1,2,4,6-cycloheptatetraene: both molecules possess a low-lying excited singlet state with a closed-shell carbenic structure, enabling rich coordination chemistry. Energy decomposition analyses conducted for currently unknown metal complexes of 4 as well as those involving stable carbenes based on the pyrazolium frame…

Complementarity of reaction force and electron localization function analyses of asynchronicity in bond formation in diels-alder reactions

2014

We have computationally compared three Diels-Alder cycloadditions involving cyclopentadiene and substituted ethylenes; one of the reactions is synchronous, while the others are slightly or highly asynchronous. Synchronicity and weak asynchronicity are characterized by the reaction force constant κ(ξ) having just a single minimum in the transition region along the intrinsic reaction coordinate ξ, while for high asynchronicity κ(ξ) has a negative maximum with minima on both sides. The electron localization function (ELF) shows that the features of κ(ξ) can be directly related to the formation of the new C-C bonds between the diene and the dienophile. There is thus a striking complementarity b…
