Methods to investigate coronary microvascular function in clinical practice.

2012

A growing amount of data is increasingly showing the relevance of coronary microvascular dysfunction (CMVD) in several clinical contexts. This article reviews techniques and clinical investigations of the main noninvasive and invasive methods proposed to study coronary microcirculation and to identify CMVD in the presence of normal coronary arteries, also trying to provide indications for their application in clinical practice.

An Analysis of Earthquakes Clustering Based on a Second-Order Diagnostic Approach

2009

A diagnostic method for space–time point process is here introduced and applied to seismic data of a fixed area of Japan. Nonparametric methods are used to estimate the intensity function of a particular space–time point process and on the basis of the proposed diagnostic method, second-order features of data are analyzed: this approach seems to be useful to interpret space–time variations of the observed seismic activity and to focus on its clustering features.

Instead of an Editorial: Mission Statements by Representatives of Both Fields

2012

The following mission statements by linguists and literary scholars working in different institutional and cultural contexts and at different stages of their careers are intended to map out the terrain covered by this journal. They tell similar stories about how these scholars came to cross the disciplinary boundary that too often divides their two fields, and they reveal a number of shared interests and emphases. But they also highlight the diversity of methodologies to which this journal is open – from metrics and stylistics to the cognitive sciences and Systemic Functional Grammar. The hopes and expectations voiced by the authors are partly pragmatic, expressing the wish that the journal…

“Diagnosing” the Need or in “Need” of a Diagnosis? Reconceptualizing Educational Need

2017

This chapter is based on compulsory school experiences of students diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and their parents in the educational context of Finland. Located in the theoretical framework of Disability Studies, the chapter aims to contribute to theory of inclusive education by initiating a new dialogue on conceptual foundations of inclusive schooling. In this regard, the chapter first deconstructs the concept of educational need that stems from the field of traditional special education as contradictory to the original ideals of inclusive education. It then moves on to reconstruct the concept of educational need in accordance with the foundational values …

Electronic fluxes during diels-alder reactions involving 1,2-benzoquinones: mechanistic insights from the analysis of electron localization function …

2012

By means of the joint use of electron localization function (ELF) and Thom's catastrophe theory, a theoretical analysis of the energy profile for the hetero-Diels-Alder reaction of 4-methoxy-1,2-benzoquinone 1 and methoxyethylene 2 has been carried out. The 12 different structural stability domains obtained by the bonding evolution theory have been identified as well as the bifurcation catastrophes (fold and cusp) responsible for the changes in the topology of the system. This analysis permits finding a relationship between the ELF topology and the evolution of the bond breaking/forming processes and electron pair rearrangements through the reaction progress in terms of the different ways o…

Understanding the participation of 3-nitropyridine in polar Diels–Alder reactions. A DFT study

2015

The reactivity of 3-nitropyridine acting as an electrophilic dienophile in polar Diels-Alder (P-DA) reactions toward three different dienes of increased nucleophilicity has been theoretically studied using DFT methods at the MPWB1K/6-31G(d) level. It has been observed that this aromatic heterocyclic system suffers cycloaddition reactions yielding isoquinoline derivatives. The present DFT study establishes that while the P-DA reactions with isoprene and 1-methoxy-1,3-butadiene take place through a two-stage one-step mechanism, the use of the strong nucleophilic Danishefsky's diene changes the mechanism to a two-step one with formation of a zwitterionic intermediate. These P-DA reactions are …

Effect of Supplementation with Wheat Bran Aqueous Extracts Obtained by Ultrasound-Assisted Technologies on the Sensory Properties and the Antioxidant…

2015

Phenolic compounds have antioxidant properties and activate endogenous detoxification defense systems able to scavenge the reactive species of oxygen. The external layers of wheat caryopsis, largely constituting by-products of the milling industry such as bran and various middlings, contain relevant amounts of phenolic compounds. The aim of the research has been to evaluate the effect of supplementation with wheat bran aqueous extracts, obtained by ultrasound-assisted technologies, on the sensory properties and antioxidant activity of dry pasta. The HPLC-DAD characterization of the extract evidenced the presence of ferulic and p-coumaric acids. The supplemented pasta showed significantly h…

General Solution of a Second-Order Nonhomogenous Linear Difference Equation with Noncommutative Coefficients

2010

The detailed construction of the general solution of a second-order nonhomogenous linear operator-difference equation is presented. The wide applicability of such an equation as well as the usefulness of its resolutive formula is shown by studying some applications belonging to different mathematical contexts.
