Elevated end systolic function in a rat model of temporal lobe epilepsy

2018

Sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP) is a common cause of premature death amongst epilepsy patients. It is hypothesized to result from cardiorespiratory dysfunction, but the exact aetiology is unknown. The aim of this study was to determine if functional cardiovascular alterations were present in rats with chronic epileptic behaviour. Naive control rats were compared to a rat model of temporal lobe epilepsy that was induced using a repeated low-dose kainic acid (KA) protocol. The results indicate that end-systolic volume was significantly (p=0.01) higher in the epileptic group whilst end-diastolic volume did not reach significance (p=0.08). Ejection fraction, stroke volume, cardiac o…

Antiepileptic Drugs, Sexual Functions and Serum Hormonal Profile in Males with Epilepsy

2014

Sexual dysfunctions are a common problem in epileptic men. Etiology is multifactorial involving both epilepsy and antiepileptic drugs. Purpose of this study was to evaluate incidence of sexual dysfunctions in epileptic men, assessing epilepsy, antiepileptic drugs, serum hormonal profile, psychiatric disorders.

Efficacy and Safety of IQYMUNE®, a Ten Percent Intravenous Immunoglobulin in Adult Patients With Chronic, Primary Immune Thrombocytopenia

2018

Background: Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) IQYMUNE® is a highly purified 10% IVIG that was assessed using the new stringent definition of response described in the revised guideline on the clinical investigation of IVIG. The efficacy and the safety of IQYMUNE® were investigated in adult patients with chronic primary immune thrombocytopenia (ITP). Methods: In this phase III multinational, multicentre, prospective, uncontrolled, open-label, single-arm study, adult patients with a baseline platelet count < 30 × 10 9 /L were treated with IVIG 10% at a dose of 2 g/kg body weight administered over 2 consecutive days. The primary endpoint was Response over the study period and was defined accor…

Cost-effectiveness of switching from omalizumab to mepolizumab in uncontrolled severe eosinophilic asthma

2020

Background: Severe asthma is burdened by frequent exacerbations and use of oral corticosteroids (OCS) which worsen patients’ quality of life and increased healthcare spending. Objectives: To assess the clinical and economic impact of switching from omalizumab (OMA) to mepolizumab (MEP) in patients eligible for both biologics but not optimally controlled with OMA. Methods: Uncontrolled patients referred to 6 asthma clinics in south of Italy switched from OMA to MEP, were enrolled and followed-up to Jan 2020. Clinical information included blood eosinophil count, asthma control test (ACT), pulmonary function, IgE, exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO), OCS intake, drugs, exacerbations/hospitalizations, …

Impact of domestic mould exposure on Aspergillus biomarkers and lung function in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

2021

International audience; Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are frequently colonised or sensitised by Aspergillus, but clinical significance remains unclear. Furthermore, little is known on the impact of indoor mould exposure during COPD. In this study, we assessed the relationship between domestic mould exposure, Aspergillus biomarkers and COPD severity during acute exacerbation and at stable state. Aspergillus section Fumigati culture in sputum and anti-Aspergillus antibodies detection (IgG and precipitins) were followed up in COPD patients that were prospectively recruited during exacerbation (n = 62), and underwent a visit at stable state after 18 months (n = 33).…

Eye Muscle Antibodies in Endocrine Exophthalmos

1989

Serum samples were obtained from 65 patients with endocrine exophthalmos class I-V. In 33/65 patients who were treated either with prednisone or with ciclosporin, blood was sampled before, during and after therapy. Antibodies against eye muscle were determined during the course of immunosuppressive therapy in order to have an objective parameter of the therapeutic effect. To ascertain the specificity of the reaction both eye and abdominal muscles were used as antigens in an ELISA system. Both IgG and IgM antibodies were detected. In 45/65 patients (71%) eye muscle antibodies were positive before starting therapy. Antibodies were mostly detected in patients with active disease. Patients with…

Inspiratory muscle training combined with pursed lip technique in women with chronic osbtructive pulmonary disease: a case study.

2020

Objective. To improve pulmonary function, exercise capacity and quality of life of two women with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Material and Methods. Study of two clinical cases, both women. An intervention of 8 weeks was performed, in which the patients performed 3 weekly sessions, of which 1 was performed with supervision of the physiotherapist and 2 sessions were performed at home. The treatment sessions consisted of inspiratory muscle training with an inspiratory threshold and controlled breathing exercises with the pursed lip technique. Results. Quality of life of both women improved at the end of the study. In the woman with severe COPD, Maximal Inspiratory Pressure (M…

Progression criteria in loading exercise programmes in lower limb tendinopathy: a protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis

2019

IntroductionLower limb tendinopathies have high rates of incidence and prevalence. Their symptomatology affects the functional capacity of people to exercise and work, being an important cause of economic and social burden. The evidence from the last decades points to therapeutic exercise as the first-line treatment in tendinopathies due to its good short-term and long-term clinical outcomes. However, there is no consensus about how the load progression should be managed throughout the therapeutic exercise programmes. Methods and analysisThis systematic review will be conducted in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. [Effect of flecainide on longitudinal and transverse conduction velocities in ventricular myocardium. An experimental study].

2007

It is known that the effect of flecainide on longitudinal and transverse ventricular conduction velocities depends on the coupling interval. If this is so, whether the longitudinal or transverse direction is predominantly affected could depend on the magnitude of the coupling interval. In order to investigate this hypothesis, we studied the effect of flecainide, 1 micromol/L, on conduction velocities in excised heart preparations from 11 rabbits using a basal cycle length of 250 ms and inserting two extrastimuli at a decreasing coupling interval. Flecainide significantly reduced both conduction velocities. However, the effect increased as the coupling interval decreased for only the longitu…
