2. Brief description of the object of study The competition of the Palace of Justice in Rome takes place in four phases between 1884 and 1887. The project for the first competition in 1884 drawn up by the then very young Ernesto Basile (Palermo 1857-1932) reveals a great deal of design expertise that transforms the complex functional program into an austere building in neo-florentine style. The original drawings of the building not realized kept in the Basile Endowment of the Department of Architecture of the University of Palermo have been the subject of preliminary study to the phases of analysis interpretation and conceptual reconstruction of the digital model. 2. State of the art and main bibliographical references The conjectural reconstruction on the basis of drawings and archival documents is a well-established and codified practice thanks to various disciplinary contributions at national and international level. Self-reported reflective functioning mediates the association between attachment insecurity and well-being among psychotherapists.

2020

Objective: Subjective well-being is a crucial variable for mental health practitioners. This study examines the influence of therapists’ attachment dimensions and self-reported reflective functioning on their perceived well-being. Further, it examines if reflective functioning mediates the association between attachment insecurity and well-being. Method: A total of 416 experienced psychotherapists were enrolled in this cross-sectional study, and completed self-report measures of attachment insecurity, reflective functioning, and well-being. We tested the hypothesized mediation model with path analysis that examined indirect effects. Results: Both attachment anxiety and avoidance dimensions …

How Does the Type of Migration Influence the Social Functioning of Polish Migrants in the Culture of the Host Country?

2014

The aim of the project was to research the social functioning of labour migrants in the culture of the host country. We were interested in showing the relationship between the time-frame of migration and the dimensions of socio-cultural adaptation. The study was conducted on a N=105 sample of Poles working abroad. A link to an online questionnaire was sent to those who had worked abroad during the study. The subjects were Poles who migrated to various countries in Western Europe. The research was of a quantitative-qualitative nature. The tools used in the study included a measure of Job Satisfaction, a Core Self Evaluation Score, and a questionnaire assessing work abroad. The qualitative pa…

A Time-Non-Homogeneous Double-Ended Queue with Failures and Repairs and Its Continuous Approximation

2018

We consider a time-non-homogeneous double-ended queue subject to catastrophes and repairs. The catastrophes occur according to a non-homogeneous Poisson process and lead the system into a state of failure. Instantaneously, the system is put under repair, such that repair time is governed by a time-varying intensity function. We analyze the transient and the asymptotic behavior of the queueing system. Moreover, we derive a heavy-traffic approximation that allows approximating the state of the systems by a time-non-homogeneous Wiener process subject to jumps to a spurious state (due to catastrophes) and random returns to the zero state (due to repairs). Special attention is devoted to the cas…

Neurocognitive Predictors of Response to Intervention With GraphoGame Rime

2021

This study explores the neurocognitive predictors of response to intervention with GraphoGame Rime, an adaptive software game designed to aid the learning of English phonics. A cohort of 398 children (aged 6 – 7 years) who had participated in a recent Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT) of GraphoGame Rime in the United Kingdom were studied. Half were randomly assigned to play GraphoGame Rime (GG Rime) and the other half were assigned to Business As Usual (BAU). A series of pretests were given prior to the intervention to all participants, designed to measure phonological awareness skills, executive function (EF) skills and the ability to synchronise finger tapping to a rhythmic beat. Finger t…

Self-regulatory efficacy and sources of efficacy in elementary school pupils: Self-regulatory experiences in a population sample and pupils with atte…

2019

In this study, we examined self-regulatory efficacy and sources of self-efficacy (mastery experiences, vicarious experiences, social persuasion and physiological/emotional states) and the relationships between self-efficacy and its sources among elementary school pupils. Two groups were compared: a population sample (PS, N = 1284) and pupils with difficulties in attention and executive functions (AED, N = 61). Data gathered from self-report questionnaires indicated that pupils in the PS group had more positive efficacy beliefs and mastery experiences and fewer negative physiological/emotional states than the AED group. Analyses showed strong connections between sources and self-regulatory e…

Tractional Motion Machines extend GPAC-generable functions

2012

In late 17th century there appeared the Tractional Motion instruments, mechanical devices which plot the curves solving differential equations by the management of the tangent. In early 20th century Vannevar Bush’s Differential Analyzer got the same aim: in this paper we’ll compare the Differential Analyzer mathematical model (the Shannon’s General Purpose Analog Computer, or GPAC) with the Tractional Motion Machine potentials. Even if we will not arrive in defining the class of the functions generated by Tractional Motion Machines, we’ll see how this class will strictly extend the GPAC-generable functions.

Traffic proximity and lung function. A case-control study in asthmatic children

2015

Introduction: Respiratory conditions are strongly dependent on air pollution. Urban areas are typically characterized by risky environmental conditions. Objectives: To analyze the effect of traffic proximity on asthma and to explore the relationship between level of traffic proximity and lung function in asthmatic and non- asthmatic children. Methods: A case-control study on children visited for suspected respiratory diseases at IBIM from 2011 to 2014 was performed. All the children have been geocoded according to their residence address. Exposure to traffic air pollution was assessed through determination of number and types of streets in proximity of the place of residence. The relationsh…

Mejorando la comprensión lectora: Desde la intervención metacognitiva en estrategias a la intervención en los procesos ejecutivos de la memoria opera…

2013

Many students may read fluently but have difficulties constructing meaning from texts. Difficulties with reading comprehension have many implications at school. In particular, problems understanding texts interfere with studying and learning from text. Reading comprehension has improved in the last 30 years focusing on intervention programs that work with strategies in which metacog-nition plays a crucial role. However, recent years have seen relevant advances in the study of the relationship between working memory (WM), particularly executive processes, and reading comprehension. In this paper, we present how the last 20 years of our research has evolved regarding metacognitive interventio…

Euripides’Andromache, a Choral Tragedy

2013

Andromache is a choral tragedy because the singular role of the chorus in the whole play and because in its plot there is a group of couples/trios, which lead th…
