The Webbed Emergence of Fuzzy Sets and Computer Science Education from Electrical Engineering
2013
Historically, Computer science emerged from electrical engineering and from mathematics in the 1960s. From the content of some unpublished documents and also some rather less-well-known papers by Lotfi A. Zadeh it is argued that the emergences of Computer science and Fuzzy Set Theory have been interlinked. Zadeh’s task as Chair of the Electrical Engineering Department in Berkeley in the 1960s, his activities in Education of Engineering and his creation of the theory of Fuzzy sets generated his view on the scientific discipline of Com- puter science as a fuzzy set. This view could establish a new approach to history and philosophy of science.

Reflections on Technology and Human Sciences: rediscovering a common thread through the analysis of a few epistemological features of fuzziness
2013
A number of reasons, both historical and philosophical, has caused Technology and Human Sciences to be perceived as disjoint domains. In opposi- tion, we claim that there exists a strong methodological affinity between these apparently disconnected fields of knowledge. Our view is further corroborated by new hints from Information Sciences, in which new scientific concepts and tools such as fuzziness have emerged. Comparing the ways in which both Technology and Literature offer a model of reality we shall see that their approaches preserve a strong connection with the “description” of the pieces of reality they aim to model, against the Galileian hard sciences’ approach of making bold hypot…
On the Evaluation of Images Complexity: A Fuzzy Approach (revised and expanded)
2006
The inherently multidimensional problem of evaluating the complexity of an image is of a certain relevance in both computer sci- ence and cognitive psychology. Computer scientists usually analyze spa- tial dimensions, to deal with automatic vision problems, such as feature- extraction. Psychologists seem more interested in the temporal dimension of complexity, to explore attentional models. Is it possible, by merging both approaches, to define an more general index of visual complexity? We have defined a fuzzy mathematical model of visual complexity, using a specific entropy function; results obtained by applying this model to pictorial images have a strong correlation with ones from an exp…

FMECA Analyses of radiological over-exposure accident to patients in brachytherapy
2012
This paper presents safety analyses of accidental events which can involve patient during High Dose Rate brachytherapy treatment in over-exposures. The study has been performed by using the well-known techniques FMECA modified by Fuzzy logic theory. Moreover, fuzzy HEART methodology was employed in order to evaluate human error probabilities for each treatment stage. The obtained results, aimed to obtain a list of the deviations with a reasonable probability to produce significant adverse outcomes, provided some recommendations for procedures and safety equipments to reduce the occurrence of radiological over-exposure accidents.
Adaptive type-2 fuzzy control of non-linear systems
2009
The paper describes the development of two different type-2 adaptive fuzzy logic controllers and their use for the control of a non linear system that is characterized by the presence of bifurcations and parameter uncertainty. Although a type-2 fuzzy logic controller is able to handle the non linearities and the uncertainties present in a system, its robustness and effectiveness can be increased by the use of an opportune adaptive algorithm. A simulation study was conducted to compare the behavior of adaptive controllers with that of simple type-1 and type-2 fuzzy logic controllers. The system to be controlled, used for the simulation, is a continuous bioreactor for the treatment of mixed w…
