Salmon (Salmo salar) side streams as a bioresource to obtain potential antioxidant peptides after applying pressurized liquid extraction (PLE)

The pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) technique was used to obtain protein extracts with antioxidant capacity from salmon muscle remains, heads, viscera, skin, and tailfins. A protein recovery percentage ≈28% was obtained for all samples except for viscera, which was ≈92%. These values represented an increase of 1.5–4.8-fold compared to stirring extraction (control). Different SDS-PAGE profiles in control and PLE extracts revealed that extraction conditions affected the protein molecular weight distribution of the obtained extracts. Fishery by-products are rich in biologically active substances and the use of green and efficient extraction methods to recover these high-added-value compounds is of particular importance. In this study, head, skin and viscera of rainbow trout and sole were used as the target matrices and accelerated solvent extraction (ASE) (45–55 °C, 15 min, pH 5.2–6.8, 103.4 bars) and pulsed electric fields (PEF) (1–3 kV/cm, 123–300 kJ/kg, 15–24 h) were applied as extraction technologies. The results showed that ASE and PEF significantly increased the protein extract efficiency of the fish by-products (p < 0.05) by up to 80%. Culture filtrate concentrates were obtained from Candida albicans yeast and mycelial cells grown in the presence of 14C-protein hydrolysate for radioactive labeling of cellular polypeptides. Both growth forms released to the medium minor but significant amounts of proteinaceous materials. The analysis of culture filtrate concentrates by means of SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and fluorography revealed a similar and complex electrophoretic pattern, though some qualitative and quantitative differences between samples obtained from yeast and mycelial cells were observed. A previous study has shown that complement component C3 binds to recombinant apolipoprotein(a) (r-apo(a)). In the present report we have investigated the interactions between lipoprotein(a) (Lp(a)), r-apo(a) and C3 in relation to complement activation and degradation. Neither Lp(a) nor r-apo(a) affected complement activation as indicated by sheep and rabbit red blood cell hemolytic assays, and by assessment of the amount of C3a generated in zymosan-activated human serum in the presence or absence of Lp(a). Extended Investigation of the Aqueous Self-Assembling Behavior of a Newly Designed Fluorinated Surfactant

The physicochemical behavior of the newly synthesized fluorinated 5-hydroxyamino-3-perfluoroheptyl-1,2,4-oxadiazin-6-one (PFHO) surfactant was investigated. Thermal analysis showed that the pure surfactant is thermally stable under an inert atmosphere to 135 degrees C, which is several degrees higher than the melting point (99 degrees C). PFHO is rather active at the water/air interface where it assumes a standing up configuration. It exhibits an enhanced self-assembling behavior; accordingly, the critical micellar concentrations at some temperatures are 2 orders of magnitude lower than those of a similar surfactant having the same phobicity, such as sodium perfluorooctanoate. ZrO2SiO2 mixed oxides: surface aspects, photophysical properties and photoreactivity for 4-nitrophenol oxidation in aqueous phase

Abstract Mixed oxides of ZrO2 and SiO2 were synthesized by a sol-gel technique by using zirconyl chloride and commercial silica gel as starting materials. The paper reports some surface features of the powders and the photoreactivity results obtained in the oxidation of 4-nitrophenol in aqueous suspensions of powdered photocatalyst. The optical characterization of the suspension was also performed by measuring the photon flows reflected and absorbed by the reacting system. The photoactivity exhibited by the ZrO2SiO2 samples is very scarce especially if compared with that shown by a TiO2 sample tested at equal experimental conditions.
