Buffy coat-derived platelets cryopreserved using a new method: Results from in vitro studies
2018
Abstract Cryopreservation for the long-term storage of platelets (PLTs) is a useful method to overcome the limits of platelet shortage. This is an in vitro prospective study to evaluate the count, viability, and function of buffy coat-derived pooled platelet concentrates (BC-PLTs), treated with dimethyl sulphoxide (DMSO) and cryopreserved (CRY BC-PLTs) at −80 °C with a modified Valeri method. PLTs were stored in 6% DMSO with a patented kit. Overall, 49 BC-PLTs from 245 healthy volunteer donors were prepared, cryopreserved, and analysed before and after 3, 6, and 9 months of storage. In flow cytometry, a statistically significant reduction in CD 42b (92.7 ± 4.29% at T0 vs. 23.6 ± 27.5% at T3…
Platelets Contribution to Thrombin Generation in Philadelphia-Negative Myeloproliferative Neoplasms: The "Circulating Wound" Model.
2021
Current cytoreductive and antithrombotic strategies in MPNs are mostly based on cell counts and on patient’s demographic and clinical history. Despite the numerous studies conducted on platelet function and on the role of plasma factors, an accurate and reliable method to dynamically quantify the hypercoagulability states of these conditions is not yet part of clinical practice. Starting from our experience, and after having sifted through the literature, we propose an in-depth narrative report on the contribution of the clonal platelets of MPNs—rich in tissue factor (TF)—in promoting a perpetual procoagulant mechanism. The whole process results in an unbalanced generation of thrombin and i…
Towards controlling PCDD/F production in a multi-fuel fired BFB boiler using two sulfur addition strategies. Part II: Thermodynamic analysis
2014
Abstract A staged equilibrium process model was developed for a bubbling fluidized bed boiler firing SRF, bark and sludge. The model was used to study the influence of sulfur addition strategies (S-pellet additive and peat co-firing) on the behavior of copper, bromine, and alkalis. Aerosol samples collected from the backpass of the boiler were used to validate the chemistry predicted by the model. The model revealed that Cu existed as Cu 2 S (s3) in the reducing zone, and CuCl (g) (for all test cases) and CuO (s) (during peat co-firing) in the oxidation zones. CuBr 3(g) was also present after the introduction of tertiary air. However the model failed to predict the formation of CuSO 4 , an …
Explicit Bézier control net of a PDE surface
2017
The PDE under study here is a general fourth-order linear elliptic Partial Differential Equation. Having prescribed the boundary control points, we provide the explicit expression of the whole control net of the associated PDE Bézier surface. In other words, we obtain the explicit expressions of the interior control points as linear combinations of free boundary control points. The set of scalar coefficients of these combinations works like a mould for PDE surfaces. Thus, once this mould has been computed for a given degree, real-time manipulation of the resulting surfaces becomes possible by modifying the prescribed information. The work was partially supported by Spanish Ministry of Econo…

BRIMA : Low-Overhead Browser-Only Image Annotation Tool
2021
Image annotation and large annotated datasets are crucial parts within the Computer Vision and Artificial Intelligence fields. At the same time, it is well-known and acknowledged by the research community that the image annotation process is challenging, time-consuming and hard to scale. Therefore, the researchers and practitioners are always seeking ways to perform the annotations easier, faster, and at higher quality. Even though several widely used tools exist and the tools’ landscape evolved considerably, most of the tools still require intricate technical setups and high levels of technical savviness from its operators and crowdsource contributors. In order to address such challenges, w…
Salivary Microbiota Composition in Patients with Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma: A Systematic Review.
2022
Background: Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is one of the most prevalent cancers worldwide. Despite recent advances in diagnosis and treatment, in recent years, an increase in the incidence of OSCC has been registered, and the mortality rate is still high. This systematic review aims to identify a potential association between the composition of salivary microbiota and OSCC. Materials and Methods: The protocol for this study was designed following the PRISMA guidelines. Records were identified using different search engines (e.g., Medline/PubMed). Observational studies, in human subjects with histological diagnosis of OSCC, concerning the analysis of salivary microbiota, were selected. …
Medication for Acromegaly Reduces Expression of MUC16, MACC1 and GRHL2 in Pituitary Neuroendocrine Tumour Tissue
2021
Acromegaly is a disease mainly caused by pituitary neuroendocrine tumor (PitNET) overproducing growth hormone. First-line medication for this condition is the use of somatostatin analogs (SSAs), that decrease tumor mass and induce antiproliferative effects on PitNET cells. Dopamine agonists (DAs) can also be used if SSA treatment is not effective. This study aimed to determine differences in transcriptome signatures induced by SSA/DA therapy in PitNET tissue. We selected tumor tissue from twelve patients with somatotropinomas, with half of the patients receiving SSA/DA treatment before surgery and the other half treatment naive. Transcriptome sequencing was then carried out to identify diff…
No evidence of EMAST in whole genome sequencing data from 248 colorectal cancers.
2021
Microsatellite instability (MSI) is caused by defective DNA mismatch repair (MMR), and manifests as accumulation of small insertions and deletions (indels) in short tandem repeats of the genome. Another form of repeat instability, elevated microsatellite alterations at selected tetranucleotide repeats (EMAST), has been suggested to occur in 50% to 60% of colorectal cancer (CRC), of which approximately one quarter are accounted for by MSI. Unlike for MSI, the criteria for defining EMAST is not consensual. EMAST CRCs have been suggested to form a distinct subset of CRCs that has been linked to a higher tumor stage, chronic inflammation, and poor prognosis. EMAST CRCs not exhibiting MSI have b…
