Nonlinear Disorder Mapping Through Three-Wave Mixing
2010
We implement a simple and powerful approach to characterize the domain distribution in the bulk of quadratic ferroelectric crystals via far-field second-harmonic spectroscopy. The approach is demonstrated in a lithium tantalate sample with periodic electric field poling and random mark-to-space ratio.
Innovative, Translucent and Multi-functional Components for the Building Envelope: technological and performance optimization
2017
The paper describes the actions aimed at the technology and performance optimization of an innovative, multi-functional building component made of precast and pre-stressed glass blocks useful for the construction of sustainable building envelopes able to reduce the energy consumption and to produce clean energy from the sun. The design optimization of different sub-components and the choice of the right materials for guaranteeing their good response in terms of mechanical resistance, thermal and acoustic insulation, light transmission, electricity production, integration with other components, dimensional coordination, are particularly described.
Direct electricity production from coconut oil - the electrooxidation of coconut oil in an acid electrolyte
2018
Supplying more and more energy is an essential task of today's energy industry. In the last few decades, in addition to traditional methods of energy production, alternative energy sources have been developing at a fast rate. One of the devices that can use these sources is the fuel cell (FC). FCs can be a power source of the future mainly due to their high efficiency, their low impact on the environment and the possibility of powering with different fuels. Most often, FCs are powered by hydrogen. However, issues with its cheap production and storage are the reasons for seeking new fuels for FCs. Yet it must be a fuel that will provide a zero or low emission level. One of these fuels can be…
Possibility of direct electricity production from waste canola oil
2017
Powering high-efficiency devices, such as fuel cells, with waste products will allow for a broader development of renewable energy sources and utilisation of by- products. This publication presents the possibility of electrooxidation of the emulsion of waste rapeseed oil, prepared on the basis of the detergent Syntanol DS-10. The process of electrooxidation was carried out on platinum electrode in alkaline (KOH) and acidic (H 2 SO 4 ) electrolyte, in the temperature range of 293-333 K. In each analysed case the process of electrooxidation took place. The maximum current density obtained was 7 mA cm -2 . Thus, it has been shown that it is possible to generate electricity directly from the em…
Performance Improvement of a Drag Hydrokinetic Turbine
2021
Hydropower is at present in many locations, among all the other possible renewable energy sources, the best one for net cost per unit power. In contrast to traditional installation, based on water storage in artificial basins, free flow river turbines also provide a very low environmental impact due to their negligible effect on solid transport. Among them, kinetic turbines with vertical axis are very inexpensive and have almost zero impact on fish and local fauna. In application to tidal waves and sea waves, where vertically averaged velocities have alternate direction, a Savonius rotor also has the advantage of being productive during the whole time cycle. In this work, the effect of an u…
Diagnosis of exon 12‐positive polycythemia vera rescued by NGS
2020
Abstract A JAK2V617F‐negative polycythemia associated with low serum epo needs to be tested for an exon 12 JAK2 mutation. When negative, due to potential serious complications in PV, a next generation sequencing is necessary to rule out false negative results.
From Myth to Science. A Short Survey on Heredity and Its Causes in Ancient Greece
2017
In this contribution, I deal with the notion of “cause” concerning hereditary diseases in ancient Greece. A notion of hereditary disease is already foreshadowed in myths, where guilt is often depicted as a pathologic contamination (miasma) affecting both the individual and his offspring (ghenos). The notion of miasma especially concerns diseases whose signs are not visible: in such cases, either gods or maleficent daemons were believed to harass human beings and inflict them punishments that took the shape of diseases. Contamination mainly spreads itself by means of blood-shedding: the slaughter of kinsmen (especially the murder of one’s parents) was widely considered as a main cause of man…
Recent Progress in the WCLL Breeding Blanket Design for the DEMO Fusion Reactor
2018
The water-cooled lithium-lead (PbLi) breeding blanket is one of the candidate systems considered for the implementation in the European Demonstration Power Plant (DEMO) nuclear fusion reactor. This concept employs PbLi liquid metal as tritium breeder and neutron multiplier, water pressurized at 15.5 MPa as the coolant, and EUROFER as the structural material. The current design is based on the single module segment approach and follows the requirements of the DEMO-2015 baseline design. The module is constituted by a basic toroidal-radial cell that is recursively repeated along the poloidal direction where the liquid metal flows along a radial-poloidal path. The heat generated by the fusion r…
Development of ultrasound-assisted digestion methods for the determination of toxic element concentrations in ash samples by ICP-OES
2011
The present thesis introduces several ultrasound-assisted digestion methods developed for the determination of toxic element concentrations in ash samples by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). Ultrasound-assisted digestion is a quite new technique used for sample pre-treatment purposes, especially in difficult sample matrixes. Elements determined are As, Ba, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Sb, Sr, V, and Zn. Most of the elements determined exist at a trace or ultra trace level in ashes and most are potential risks in the environment or human body even at low concentrations. Most of the selected elements can be determined directly by ICP-OES, but for the determination of…
