Piccole città per quarantenni. Sul senso di sé nella scrittura storiografica, in margine a un libro di Vanessa Roghi

2019

Starting from an analysis of Vanessa Roghi's recent book, Piccole città, we focus on the link between historiographic writing and autobiography. In particular, it analyzes the way this link changed at the end of the twentieth century, when political categories that had determined identities, even of historians, for more than a century, have finished. Since then, issues considered "private" have emerged in the public debate and in the historiographic debate, as happened for example with drug addiction, at the centre of Roghi's book.

Robots that look like humans: A brief look into humanoid robotics

2018

This article provides a brief overview of the technology of humanoid robots. First, historical development and hardware progress are presented mainly on human-size full-body biped humanoid robots, together with progress in pattern generation of biped locomotion. Then, «whole-body motion» – coordinating leg and arm movements to fully leverage humanoids’ high degrees of freedom – is presented, followed by its applications in fields such as device evaluation and large-scale assembly. Upper-body humanoids with a mobile base, which are mainly utilized for research on human-robot interaction and cognitive robotics, are also introduced before addressing current issues and perspectives.

Environmental Data Processing by Clustering Methods for Energy Forecast and Planning

2011

This paper presents a statistical approach based on the k-means clustering technique to manage environmental sampled data to evaluate and to forecast of the energy deliverable by different renewable sources in a given site. In particular, wind speed and solar irradiance sampled data are studied in association to the energy capability of a wind generator and a photovoltaic (PV) plant, respectively. The proposed method allows the sub-sets of useful data, describing the energy capability of a site, to be extracted from a set of experimental observations belonging the considered site. The data collection is performed in Sicily, in the south of Italy, as case study. As far as the wind generation…

Climate Data Records of Vegetation Variables from Geostationary SEVIRI/MSG Data: Products, Algorithms and Applications

2019

The scientific community requires long-term data records with well-characterized uncertainty and suitable for modeling terrestrial ecosystems and energy cycles at regional and global scales. This paper presents the methodology currently developed in EUMETSAT within its Satellite Application Facility for Land Surface Analysis (LSA SAF) to generate biophysical variables from the Spinning Enhanced Visible and InfraRed Imager (SEVIRI) on board MSG 1-4 (Meteosat 8-11) geostationary satellites. Using this methodology, the LSA SAF generates and disseminates at a time a suite of vegetation products, such as the leaf area index (LAI), the fraction of the photosynthetically active radiation absorbed …

A Decision support system for sustainable operations management in small power plants

2014

The importance of environmentally-friendly electricity production is recognized as one of the most important challenges of our future, covering a broad context of research topics and promoting future scenarios based on renewable energies and new technologies. In the short term, however, energy generation will still be largely relying on power plants fired with fossil fuels whose emissions of pollutants are regulated by the industrial emissions directive in the EU legislation. Such directive does not apply to small and medium combustion plants, which until now, have only been subject to national regulations. As part of its air quality package from December 2013, the EU Commission has propose…

Co-Design of an Online Campaign for an Inclusive Community: Languages, Images and Participation

2022

This volume shows how communication matters in building our perception and imaginary about groups of people that are different form “us”. The difference between “us” and “others” is totally cultural and represents an obstacle to integration. To avoid the extreme effects of radicalisation, we can promote social campaigns based on two important features: participation and awareness about (counter-)narratives. This book discusses the good practices built in the European project Oltre, devoted to preventing the radicalisation in second generation Muslim youth. It will serve to push the reader beyond common sense and prejudice, towards the future citizenship of Italy, Europe and the whole world.

New dispatching strategy for the integration of active-demand and distributed storage in the electricity market

2015

The proliferation of Distributed Generation (DG) in power systems calls for a redesign of electricity network management, which should be able to accommodate large amounts of intermittent generation. This issue requires a discussion about the current dispatching regulation, giving distributed storage systems and qualified electricity consumption the opportunity to provide ancillary services to the distribution grid. In this work, a new dispatching strategy for the integration of active-demand and distributed storage in the Italian electricity market is presented. The strategy is focused on a distribution Smart Grid (SG), where customers can indirectly participate to the Day-Ahead (DA) and t…

Bayesian Game Model: Demand Side Management for Residential Consumers with Electric Vehicles

2019

This paper proposes the game theory enabled approach for the integration of electric vehicles for demand side management (DSM). Demand side management is very complex with conventional approaches. In order to the efficient mechanism of a game theory enabled approach may resolve the complexity. With the increased penetration level of electric vehicles it will be difficult to control grid-to-vehicle integration. The Bayesian game theory provides the solution of such problems in an organized manner. In the presence of distributed energy resources, Electric vehicles will play an important role to stabilize the grid integration. Electric Vehicles consume power during off-peak load period and inj…

Improvement of the atomic fluorescence determination of mercury by using multicommutation

2002

Atomic fluorescence spectrometry (AFS) determination of Hg has been improved by exploiting the possibilities of the multicommutation approach in order to outline a fully mechanised system which supplies the same sensitivity as the use of continuous measurements, reducing drastically the reagents consumed and waste generation. The use of multicommutation with a simultaneous reduction of the liquid–gas separator volume and the insertion point modification of argon transport gas provides a sensitivity of the AFS measurements of 300 mV ng−1 ml (using a full scale of 1000 mV), a limit of detection (3 s) of 1.3 ng l−1 and relative standard deviation values below 0.1% for 10 independent measuremen…

A clean method for flow injection spectrophotometric determination of cyclamate in table sweeteners

2005

Abstract A flow system based on the multicommutation is proposed for fast and clean determination of cyclamate. The procedure exploits the reaction of cyclamate with nitrite in acidic medium and the spectrophotometric determination of the excess of nitrite by iodometry. The flow system was designed with a set of solenoid micro-pumps to minimize reagent consumption and waste generation. The detection limit was estimated as 30 μmol L −1 (99.7% confidence level) with linear response ranging up to 3.0 mmol L −1 . The coefficient of variation was estimated as 1.7% for a solution containing 2.0 mmol L −1 cyclamate ( n  = 20). About 60 samples can be analyzed per hour, consuming only 3 mg KI and 1…
